Did the ground straps fix the no pulse at the injector? I am having the same issue now on my 89 k2500
Make sure you have at least 3 ground straps for most ANY older vehicle. One from the negative battery to the body, then from the body to the engine block, the from the body to the frame. All three need to have a ground circuit.
thank you, im upgrading the alternator in my 92 c1500 and needed to upgrade the grounds this is super helpful.
The Thanks Button awaits you
Yeah. Suddenly, after rebuilding the carb and ignition systems last month im getting a spit/sputter and a one time headlight flicker. Inspecting these today
I have many more videos about this truck and others on my channel. Check it out.
THANK YOU....6 MONTHS OF TROUBLESHOOTING AND NUMEROUS PART CHANGING. I was throwing TBS Code truck was in safe mode with no 4th Gear, Delayed power, random high idles. All because of the ground was arc'd out. Thank you for stoppping me from selling a Fine running machine my 93 c3500 drw
I recommend you reset your truck's computer too. If you never have. It can help many things.
Was your truck bogging out I have an issue with my 3500 right now and wondering if that could be it
@@miguelgranados2733 yes, if I punch it, delays then boggs real bad. Randomly dies at dead stops. Now that ground is fixed no problems at all. Shifts outs fine
Same with my blazer it don’t have 4th and I searched under the truck and found a ground strap that was dangling down idk if it could cause it not to worn
So the ground in the back of the head was what fixed it

I have been very successful with a 3/8 Drive 4 ft extension with a wobble socket to get to these ground straps behind the engine and near the firewall.
Nice restore work
We have lots more videos regarding this 1990 Chevy Chevrolet C/K1500 c1500 k1500 pickup truck. See our playlist czcams.com/play/PLVsdJzatTm_VLjk-TM6KIqExDrJF5L-bX.html
i snapped the bolt in the firewall today my ground straps looked really green and easily broke when i barely touched them, gonn paint the frame as i put the lift kit in my 98 silverado k2500
Thanks for sharing this video. I've often wondered if it were not feasible to unbolt the cab and lift it a few inches from its perches to gain easier access to the back of the engine. It would seem to me not that much more time added to the work just to support the cab off the frame for the time needed to work at the back of the engine, transmission or the transmission bell housing. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us. I have an '88 OBS that I'm restoring and want to make sure I have all the ground straps good and secure; I can appreciate your frustration trying to track down random electrical problems and such.
I ended up selling this once great running truck (that I did a TON of good stuff to) because it decided to quit running out of nowhere. I changed and checked EVERYTHING - and it didn't matter. Sold it for $3500 and glad it is gone. Very dissapointing because I put a ton of effort into this truck with so much new and good stuff. See my other videos on the playlist link.
I have same beautiful engine in my caprice...1988 9c1 ....ground was original and green of corrosion
What length did you need for the one on block to frame?
I've subscribed. I'm having the same issue. Been throwing parts at it for 2 months. Ran great before. I'll patiently be waiting. Lol. Good luck sir.
You and me both. That project is on hold right now because I got so frustrated with it that I've just stepped away from it for a while. Working on my motocross bikes and other motorcycles for the time being. But we'll let you know when we do some updates on that truck. Shouldn't be too long
@@HorsepowerHouse sounds good. If I get anywhere with mine I'll let you know. It's the same year as well.
What I do know is my battery was defective. It was throwing random voltage at the truck's computer. With no load on the battery it would should 13volts - then 8, then 13.3, then 6. And that was sitting there disconnected from everything else. So, this NEW battery (6 months old) was obviously defective. (I think that's what started this whole mess.) The shop I bought the battery from then confirmed it was defective by testing it (voltage going all over the place unattached to anything) and exchanged it. And this was no el-cheap either. Anyway, I think the battery fried the truck's computer. Because now it will turn over and over all day long, but no fuel, and no spark. So, that tells me the computer is fried. Because everything else has been replaced and checked (by me.). All grounds are good. All fuses, relays, ignition module, battery cables, ground straps, distributor, throttle body, injectors, sensors, fuel pump, spark plugs, plug wires, rotor and cap, etc. It gets fuel TO the TBI - but the TBI nor spark plugs are doing anything. But I was so pissed at this thing I just left it sitting for the summer. Will get back to it when I finish another project that I am currently working on.
@@HorsepowerHouse
My story pretty much to a T. Guess I'll be off to the junkyard again in the next couple of days for a computer.
@@travismccown8550 They are on eBay too. That's where I got mine.
If you have a body lift you can get to the bolt from underneath the truck with a long extension
1992 5.7 truck is a head scratcher, code reads 51 ecm default , only found a red hot exhaust manifold driver side. Put a new distributor in to get it started but still left with the problem . Got a tps and map sensor on order. Checking ground wires today
Throwing parts at it will be very frustrating. Been there - done that. I recommend you get a professional mobile mechanic to come to you and diagnose it (seriously). I ended up selling this truck for pennies after I threw all kinds of parts at it - and it still wouldn't run (after being GREAT!)
Yes, thank you.
anyone can tell me why i just engine swapped mine after blowing my okd one up and now its cranking but not starting its timed, its got a new starter and battery.
Someone may have mentioned this but in these particular trucks, if you have no fuel for no apparent reason, its worth while to also check the pickup tube on FP in the tank, they rot away and need replaced, its just a rubber line
Yup. Ive seen that too
Ive been telling people that for years, great to finally hear it from someone elses mouth 😅
@TravisJenson-zv9lz I replaced the entire fuel pump in mine. Still no dice. 👎
@@HorsepowerHouse pull your 02 sensor and clean it with brake clean , wd-40 or any ol type of solvent , allow to dry and reinstall it👍 also your exhaust system absolutely cannot have any leaks
@TravisJenson-zv9lz Nope and nope. I checked and replaced everything that would prevent a vehicle from running. That too. All of it. Sold the truck as-is for $3,000, and was glad of it. Oh, and this was after I did all kinds of successful projects, upgrades, fixes, etc to it. Talk about disappointing. See videos on my channel of this truck.
I noticed that you ran some wires above the valve covers . I don't like how gm set the electric wiring so close to the manifolds
Im having issues with my 88 c1500 turn signals (hvac module flashing in-sync one day, no functioning turn signals or brake lights the next) and think its probably a ground issue. I was told theres 1 ground on each side of the core support but i can only find the driver side ground strap. Is my passenger side ground missing? And are there any other places youd look to check if you were having the same issue?
Be hind the grill ..
Did you ever fix this ? I'm having the exact same problem
That strap on the back of the trans looked like it was a stud in which case my lazy ass would have left the old strap on slip the new strap over the stud put a new nut holding it on ram the other end to the firewall and had two straps there . Now there is a ground strap back at the fuel pump connecting to the frame that would be nice to clean that connection.
i had thses issues. re did all the butt connections by the pump relays and now im at least running. ton of other issues
What got it running? One thing?
I am getting fuel to theTBI though. Just not beyond there. Changed everything else - still just turns over and over and over and over and..... :/

My truck would crank and drive, I had a opening in my ground wire showing all the wires I didn’t realize this till it made a spark. After that my truck doesn’t want to turn on. Could I have toasted the ground wire?
You probably "toasted" more than that.
I know this is a late trail on your feed ,but did you ever figure out what was causing your no start no spark after you installed the new grounding straps? I have a 87 K5 with a TBI issue similar to yours.
No. Sold it for $3200 not running. And i did a ton of other great work to it too. What a waste. 😖🤕
Thank you!
The Thanks button awaits you
What does the ground strap do near the fuel neck? My is crumbled
Replace it. They are all necessary.
I wish I would had watched this video a long time ago. I checked that back grounding strap by removing it under the truck with about 3 feet of extensions. Unfortunately I then dropped the bolt and never found where it went to. It’s still trapped in the engine bay somewhere. I never knew what size it was so I connected it to another bolt on the block.
Dontcha love that - when a nut or bolt disappears to oblivion.... like that missing sock at home. They all end up in a mystery location on Mars. 😆🤷
@@HorsepowerHouse Haha. It blows my mind as there’s honestly not many places it could go. I know it didn’t hit the ground and spent about 2 hours feeling around in every blind spot around the trans and body.
Did you ever fix your problem?
@@TheStangSlayer try a mechanic's magnet. But it has probably already fallen out if you drove it.
No, I messed with this truck for almost a year. Never got or running after it used to be amazing. Sold it for $3500 and was glad of it. Mildly disappointing to say the least. See my other videos here. More projects etc about this truck.
I'm replacing both those as well I was thinking it would be easier to relocate the ground strap to another location on the engine that I can get at. Anything wrong with doing that?
I guess you'll find out
I just did the ground straps on my 1994 GMC K1500, I just removed the old strap off the back of the head and put the new one from the dipstick mounting bolt to the frame where a wiring retainer was and it’s working great.
Mine was the ignition Control Module after putting a ton of money into it on other parts.
Already replaced it. 😑
I have a 1989 c1500 single cab that is doing the same thing. It randomly misfires like the ignition control module is out of wack. And then it’ll shut off. Then randomly it’ll run perfect for a few days and repeat the cycle.
Did you figure it out yet?

@@eriktorres8975 my 91 will run perfect sometimes on cold start. Not always . The heat in the summer really gets to it it did through a code for the esc and my abs module is flashing or solid not sure if anything related to electrical my ground strap from cab to frame is bad though I think imm thinking instead or removing it to simply stack them its a stud back there isn't just need to make sure its fairly clean I guess if you get that far into it might as well take it
Are there any other wires connected to the same bolt as the ground strap on the rear of the passenger side head? I'm seeing a small black wire back in that area and I'm not sure where it goes. Thanks!
No. Someone put that there.
@@HorsepowerHouse what year do you have Jeremy does that black wire come from the factory harness
Did you fix it? If not it's probably your ground at the back of the truck by the rear lights sometimes you have to take the wire off and put another eyelit on it because it will look grounded but it won't make a connection. also take something like scotch brite and rub where the ground is before reconnecting
And also did you check the module under the distributor? Sometimes it could be you just need another module.
Ignition Module and distributor are both new. It didn't solve it. As is everything else relating to "everything" on this truck. I could bore you with the LIST.... Haven't bothered with it in many months. It's in the back of the "line" of other projects now. Where is this ground wire in the rear of the truck though? I have not heard of it or looked for it. No one has mentioned it. The interior cabin ground under the dash was inspected and it's fine as are all of the other chassis grounds now. All are new and good. However, the battery was confirmed defective - and I believe that varying voltage it was sending (from 5v - 14v with no load on it) fried the truck's computer (battery was expensive and less than 6 months old). That's what I THINK - it fried the truck's computer - because everything (I mean everything) else was checked. I have the replacement computer to install and I hope to goodness it resolves it. Because literally everything else has been investigated.
@@HorsepowerHouse sorry just got your message the ground is under the truck bed before the rear lights slide under truck from the back driver side and look up it is bolted under the frame it is a wire not a ground strap but it is a ground and your fuel pump won't work without it. remember it may look like it's making contact but cut it and put another eyelit on it and see.
Don't forget to scotch brite surface to make sure you get a good ground
@@HorsepowerHouse also I remembered there's another one at the front of the intake
Did the ground straps fix the not getting fuel issuse?
@@crazyharleybum Nope. I replace basically everything on this truck that could keep it from running, and it still did not fix it. I ended up selling it for $3,500, and was glad of it. Because this thing was amazing when I was done with all the upgrades, and then that happened. So what a waste of time money and effort. Talk about disappointing.
I’m have the same problem with my truck replaced the grounds on the fire wall and got a new fuel pump and fuel pump assembly new fuel pump relay and still nothing. I haven’t replace the icm or the oil pressure sensor and but I have spark to my spark plug wires and I’m just not sure what it is
After being fed up with it for almost a year - I sold my truck for $3500 (still not running). And was glad to see it go. Even though I liked the truck. Just blew me away that it decided to QUIT running for no aparent reason. And no fix solved it.
Distributor mine done the same.i change the whole sending unit nothing happened until I got a distributor
Tried it. Didn't matter.
I'm going through a similar issue...truck would drive fine one day,the next day it wouldn't start, considering could dump gas in the carb and start it right up I replaced the pump and relay, new fuse too even though old one was good, now the truck won't do nothing, getting different power reading 5 volts at the pump,12 at the relay...I haven't eaten or slept for going on 3 days now because it has me so depressed
Way old video but i once had this same issue on a tbi engine and i had to replace the distributor. If the ecm isnt getting a all systems go with ignition it will not let the injectors fire.
Tried that. No fix. Sold the truck for $3500 as-is and was glad of it. After replacing EVERYTHING - still didn't run - after being perfect. Talk about disappointing...
Thanks I’m getting power on mines just bad grounds that just worn off
I found out something about no fuel delivery to the TBI unit. There's an oil pressure sensor located at the back of the block, on top of it, that's kind of hidden by the distributor. If it goes bad, it prevents the fuel pump from initially delivering fuel, upon startup. I know that's the issue with my 1991 K1500, as I replaced EVERY component in the fuel system, so I could get it back on the road, after sitting for about 8 years. Had an axle seal leak, among other things I've fixed on it. Drove it a short distance to my bridge on our property, carrying food plot supplies. When I was done for the day, it cranked over like a champ, but wouldn't start. Fuel pump fuse was good, so I put some in an empty quart oil jug, splashed a little into the TBI unit, and the truck fired right up. You might want to pass that along; I'm no automotive "expert," but I've wrenched on my share of vehicles; this is the first time I ever knew about this, and that HAS to be why it wouldn't start, considering that after I "prime" the TBI unit, the truck fires right up, and runs fine... lol
Ignition Module....
That oil pressure sensor should bypass the fuel pump relay if it fails, as long as there is oil pressure when cranking, it will bypass the fuel pump relay to keep u from being stranded
So the ground strap on the back of the engine runs to the same lug on the firewall as the strap that runs down to the frame rail? Im about to tackle this job on my 91 since my engine ground strap is completely gone.
Yes
@@HorsepowerHouse thanks for this video it saved me from digging out the factory service manual lol
Don't overthink it though. As long as the engine is grounded either to the frame or the body, it's all good. You're basically making a ground circuit throughout the vehicle.

My 1991 K1500 has both of them pretty much wasted; Amazon is sending replacements, arriving in a few days...
Could this be a reason to why my alternator is not charging ? Firewall ground
Could be. You will find out....
Poor grounds can cause all sorts of problems.
Did it fix your fueling issues?
Nope. Tried for a year with no luck. Sold it for $3500. Good riddance. Very disappointing though. I put a heap of work into that truck. See my other videos 😮💨🤷
Wouldn't a bad ground prevent it from starting?
It could. But wasnt an issue here.
Is this the same with 97 c2500
I don't know. You will find out when you dive in though. All cars have 2-3 (or more) ground straps in various locations. Most get crusty and nasty and should be replaced at some point.
Did this get the truck running good
No. I sold it for $3500 as-is, and was glad of it.
Jokes on me I have a broken motor mount so that back one was a cake walk

Can I use a coated battery cable?
As a ground strap? Probably, but I don't know for sure.
@@HorsepowerHouse thank you
I don't suppose it would matter. A heavy cable is a heavy Cable in this case
Can this apply to 85 as well
All cars & trucks use them.
@@HorsepowerHouse I meant to say same location
Maybe. It's not as important. As long as the body is grounded to the engine block and the battery is grounded to the body. It can be anywhere. All cars need this.
As long as you have that Circle of grounding between the battery, body, and engine block, you're doing it correctly. But how you specifically create this circle, is up to you.
@@HorsepowerHouse thank you
Did that fox the problem?
No
I never got the truck running again. Sold it for $3300 and was glad of it. :/
Hey what’s up bud what kind of problems are you having I know these trucks like the back of my hand other than the battery groundstraps what else are you having issues with
It would take too long to type the whole story here. The repair has been on the backburner for almost 18 months because I got so sick and tired and going through everything on it and still no start. I will dive back into it this summer and get back to you. But in a nutshell - aside from the main computer box I have replaced everything and I mean everything that would prevent it from starting. Still nothing - but spins over and over. Is getting fuel but no spark (distributor and module have been replaced too- didn't fix it.) Used to run great. I found out my new very expensive battery was defective and I believe it fried the computer.
I have a few other ground wires in the rear of the truck to confirm but other than the computer and a couple of wires this truck will not start. (Over $10,000 have been put in it between the previous owner and me - not related to this - and it will be worthless now...)
@@HorsepowerHouse I kid you not my 1989 c1500 was going the same thing. I replaced the distributor and still nothing. Finally I took it to a mechanic and he had a OEM distributor laying around put it on and turned on. Now I’m having randomn misfires again and I’m thinking it might be time to replace it again.
@@eriktorres8975 I doubt that is your fix.

Check the fuel pump ground
Fuel pump works fine.
there is also grounds on the fire wall just below your heater hoses at the bottom easier to get at from under the truck I finally finished my 1991 GMC 1500 short box , czcams.com/video/-BDUuHcDqW4/video.html there is aground for the fuel pump on the rear drivers side frame which also grounds your rear tale lights, there is a little fuel pump fuse on your fire wall near the fuel pump relay .
Thanks for the info. I still haven't touched this truck in a while. But plan to soon.
F#*king Chevys!!
