  • At the turn of the last century, NASA discovered the process of High voltage Electrostatic Levitation. Digging into the idea, this video explores the application of this process to the human body, giving users the ability to levitate small objects. Is this a step toward something greater?

    I like this a lot. The especially interesting part to me is that this system only achieves quasi stability because it *isn't* in a vacuum, whereas so much physics taught in the classroom assumes a vacuum to the point of borderline ignorance.
    Without the air to act as an ion channel needed to achieve negative feedback, it seems like this system would have exactly one unstable equilibrium point somewhere near the midpoint between the plates and getting it to sit there would be like balancing a pencil on its sharpened tip.
    I wonder if gluing some very small neutral mass (like individual grains of rice or something) would make the smaller foil even easier to control, since there will be a little more mechanical inertia in the system while the electrical side is relatively unchanged.

You literally said you "invented the idea of using high voltages electrostatic electricity to create levitation." No you did not. Michael Faraday used electromagnetic fields to make things levitate in the mid 1800's. Tesla did even more experimentation on this in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He even had conceptualized electromagnetically levitated "flying machines" that did not use aerodynamics to keep them aloft and his Wardenclyff Tower was just the primary stage in creating the energy grid necessary to make this a reality.

    Just one thing about safety:
    It is wrong to say that "if you keep one hand in your pocket electricity wouldn't flow in your chest". Actually, the current flowing in your heart is double than the right hand-left hand case!
    You can learn more by searching electrical safety and pathway on Google (i don't know how that factor is called in english, sorry)

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey, fair enough! I'll be honest, i've tested the one hand rule while doing this, and shocking myself. Honestly, across the chest is terrible. Absolutely terrifying. When I am shocked standing on the foil....no biggie. The arm just twitches is all. I dont know the numbers, I just know I tested it, and the one hand rule still protects you somewhat.

    • @Frak565
      @Frak565 Před 3 lety +3

      @@PlasmaChannel I can confirm that it hurts more if you take it from both hands (honestly, me and electroboom have similar experience with shocks xD). But more pain doesn't mean necessarily more current through your heart, which is the thing to care about.
      The one hand rule anyway has his pros, when i play with arcs i also use only the right hand, but for preventing to close a circuit with my body and because you are more focused on what you're doing with that hand (also because the right hand is a bit farther from the heart than the left).
      Have you tried doing the experiment standing on the plastic stool with the aluminum wrapped on your elbow? Sholdn't it work anyway? If yes, is the safest case, because current should flow only in your forearm

    Jay, you continue to inspire, awe and inform! One of your coolest videos to date, and that's saying slot given how many great ones you've made!
    I have two questions.
    1. If not too much trouble can you do a short video explaining/shoimg how you improved the power supply for the voltage multiplier? Or make a Patreons post with pictures and a bit of text describing, if that is easier.
    2. When you stand on the plate, are you wearing shoes or are you barefoot/wearing socks? (Normally I'd swear you had to be barefoot, but high voltage can do some funny things with things that are normally insulating, like soles of shoes, lol

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Justin! That is really nice of you to say. I put a lot of work into this video, and knowing that you enjoyed it is great. as for 1) really great recommendation. I'm more than happy to do that for my patreons 2) I am barefoot when standing on the foil. Using socks results in my feet not being in complete contact with the foil, so sparks jump between the cotton and burn me. Full contact is a must!
