I really enjoy the very old graves. I try to imagine just how different their lives were then ours today, and what life was like back then.

I wonder also. But it had to be hard living unless you were wealthy. So many diseases cold hunger hard backtracking work.

Even more awesome the second time! Beautiful effigy for the knight. Shame they are keeping rubbish in the church ruins, hopefully they will clean it out soon!! Thank you!❤

At least it looks as though they've collected the leaves and rubbish in one place...seems someone tried to be as neat as possible. Let's hope they came back later to take it away!

I found the translation of the Latin inscription:
It can be translated as follows:
Here lies Nathaniel Fox, of Rathreagh, founder of this church, eldest son and heir of Patrick Fox of Moyvore in Co. Westmeath, who had as wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Walter Hussey of Moyhussey Knight. By whom he had 8 sons and 5 daughters, of whom 8 sons and 3 daughters survived.
Patrick, son of the aforesaid Nath., sole heir, had as wife, Barbara, daughter of Lord Patrick Plunkett, Baron of Dunsany. The same Nath. and Elizabeth, lived for 25 years as man and wife, and he died at Rathreagh,2nd of Feb. A.D. 1634. Aged 46.

This was extremely interesting with the knight and his sarcophagus. Really nicely done; it seems the whole Fox family is buried within the remains of the old church. Love all the old graves you read from the 1600's. Beautifully done GV. Thank you. ♥️🙏☘️

I enjoyed your video just as much the second time around. The church ruins are very interesting, so is the foxe family burial place.
      The knight's tomb is supercool!
I hope it can be restored one day.
Thank you very much GV and Sue, for a very interesting video. 😀

I found this video so interesting with the old graves of the Fox family within the church ruins, the knight’s resting place was stunning snd so intricately carved with his sarcophagus. I really hope that rubbish is taken out and the area tidied up of weeds. It should be respected. Thanks to you and Sue for a great video xx

I think people are trying to be as respectful as the environment will allow. They want to keep the graves tidy by removing detritus, and keeping it out of plain view but there is no garbage receptacle for them to place it into. The graveyard should provide a container so people can keep the graves tidied up as best they can.
I love the expression on the face of the little curly-haired angel. She looks a bit surprised ❤

These old churches left to rot away is so sad. It seems to me that if a church has failed, The building should be given to someone. These historic buildings should not be left to rot away. So very sad. If the church was given to a person/family for free it would be kept up most likely.

Expired is a now old fshioned term for dying. Like a jug of milk that's spoiled and finished when it reaches its expiration date; it's over. It comes from two Latin words, Ex meanng out or out of and pirare to breath. So it means more or less out-of-breath. And when you're permanantly out of breath you certainly are dead. The word was used a lot in legal documents in its day.; Gentler way of saying "Aunt Minnie is dead.".

The 'surprised" round face was heavily featured in New England in the US. They sometimes had wings attached. It represents the soul's awe and wonder at approaching Heaven. The style is almost childlike in its simplicity.

How were people buried with vertical headstones inside the church? Were they buried after the church was abandoned? I know Westminster Cathedral has thousands of people buried in its interior, but so many of the graves have flat stones in the floor and walls.

So when they have one tombstone with parents and children, is it assumed the children may have been cremated? Was cremation popular in those times? And just put it on top of the parent grave? Just wondering. Several tombstones I see have several names alot

How fortunate you are to have so many interesting and very old cemeteries to visit. How about giving us an incite into tombstone architecture and symbols and also epitaphs. Also where is the most coveted part of the churchyard for burial ( N E W S ). And last when did humans start burying bodies in churches. I have seen some with dates in the 1300’s
