The New Terrain Following Radar mode in the F-15E - how it works and how to use it. If you have any comments, suggestions or questions please drop by my Discord at: / discord
Lovely tech! So potent! I've been curious about TF and hungering for an Aardvark specifically because of it - wasn't aware that the one in the Mudhen is basically the same system ported over. That's very cool! =). Thank you for the showcase! Was a great watch, as usual =)
It's quite considerate of the designers of the system, that even at the lowest 100' altitude setting in the Very Low Clearance mode they left enough room below for a couple of vertically stacked flights of Viggens. =) Many thanks for the video, got a much better understanding of the system after watching it!
Cool video. Would be neat to see this combined with using the air to ground radar to acquire the target, although that would probably be a two person operation.
Yes. Great idea. Also true that it would be a "bandwidth" night mare. Happy to find someone to drive while I work the screens. You know where to find me if you are interested. ;-)
A few years ago I read a B-1B pilots account of his experience with TFR. He said it worked ok when flying manual with cues but in auto was constantly doing hard pullups. He said they rarely used auto mode.
@@Sidekick65 Just recently saw a walkaround vid with a B-1B pilot and he said they don't do low level anymore. He pointed out the control panel for TFR but said it's disconnected and inoperative.
I've been just plain screwing around in helicopters and trainers in 2.9 (and testing / taking metrics on DLSS and DLAA) so I haven't messed with the TFR yet - one of the main reasons I wanted the F-15. This video's gonna derail that... enough dang testing, I don't need the monitoring and dashboarding I'm doing at work bleeding over anymore 😆
@@Sidekick65 cut the video halfway last night because I was too sleepy. But now I understand an old school cheap fish finder 😆 Top drawer instruction. Good blend of engineering, requirements, context, and quickstart. I expect to be able to work the thing whenever I get around to it. (Probably means it's a well designed system too right?)
You're right I really need to try thr TFR. At the end you said you wouldn't advise doing it in the F15, what airframe would you prefer? I haven't really sunk my teeth into the Mudhen yet.
Dumb question. Why is the TFR not done by the APG70 but rather the pod? With the actual Eye of Sauron in that nose, why limit the feature to only when you've got the navflir installed? Question asked here instead of Discord for the algo
Good question. I'll have to do some research but I think it may have to do with a couple of things. First of all TFR is not needed for many missions. Why build in the extra complexity when it could be a mission-specific add-on. It also might be that the TFR functionality is tightly coupled to the FLIR (and maybe proprietary to the same supplier) so it made sense yo combine them.

Thank you Iain.
Very welcome

Interesting. I think I heard the opposite from a F-111 pilot who used it and seemed to like it.

Ooh! I’ll have to try that out!
Let us know how it goes

I'm pleased to hear it. Enjoy the view!

Well, I must have misspoke. As far as I know, the F15 is the only plane that has true TFR in DCS.

A4!!!!!
It's in work. Watch this space. Thanks for the feedback
@@Sidekick65 i was joking, thanks for this video!
@@pabletesoy I wasn't. LOL. Now that I understand Terrain Following Radar, I can actually use the Terrain CLERANCE radar in the A-4 much better!
@@Sidekick65 Nice!!
@@Sidekick65 Ohhhh! I'm looking forward to _that!_ :D Cheers!
