  • Back in 1983, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove West on WA SR-2 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

    Wow... to think there actually was a time in history when traffic wasn't backed up clear from Sultan to Monroe.

      About 30 years ago I lived just east of Goldbar, big holiday weekends were awful for traffic! One was careful to stock up on smokes, t.p. and groceries! Once to Startup could get onto the Kellog Lk. road and go way around, but really long drive for incidentals.

    Highway 2 went through Snohomish instead of around it.

      It also used to go through Main Street in Monroe

      I grew up in Everett and played golf often at Snohomish GC. .. circa 1978-83… I remember having to cut thru town. You can even see the old Harrington Chevrolet dealership on what is just 2nd Street. Same building is now furniture store.

      There was big federal $$$ to do the same for Monroe, until swindled by the state. 40 years later Monroe at 5:00PM would have appreciated it. Fun to see the route through Snohomish, I had ridden on that years ago but forgot exactly where it was. This went about 2 miles from my current location north of Snohomish.

      @BillKibby1 kind of a blessing, the bypass took all the money out of snohomish. Traffic might be shit in monroe but it's amazing how much it's expanded.

    I noticed at the Ebey Slough / Hwy 2 Trestle, there's no exit or route to Lake Stevens at all - doesn't look like it was even started at the time. I wonder how people got up there - or did the city even exist at the time?

    • @alexknafla6219
      @alexknafla6219 Před 3 měsíci

      You had to take the exit halfway across the tressel to go under it and then you can go up the super steep hill from the bottom

    My old stomping grounds grew up there from 1980 until 2009 left never been back. I remember the candy cane drive in best burgers in town. it sucked when Jack in the box bought them out in the early 90's

      I believe it was bank of America wasnt it? That's when they put the building in and then moved the vault from the old location down main street.

    I'm curious: Do you know why the drivers were always going 10-20 under the speed limit in these videos? I noticed it in some of the I-5 ones, but here it's obvious as the driver has to keep moving to the shoulder to let the traffic pass.

    • @KieferSkunk
      @KieferSkunk Před 3 měsíci

      It seems in general people just weren't driving that fast at the time. As for the driver of this vehicle, the bumpiness and the slow acceleration makes me think they were in a less powerful vehicle with a less-than-awesome suspension, and they were probably also driving more slowly to allow the camera to see things.
      It's too bad the camera was pointed mostly toward the ground through the drive. Made it a little harder to see some of the sights in Monroe and Snohomish.

    • @toddn.3123
      @toddn.3123 Před 3 měsíci

      I think the camera was attached to the outside of the car so likely they were afraid to go too fast.

    • @Mommahpc
      @Mommahpc Před měsícem

      No one was in hurry to do anything back then.Once you got to everett it got faster so people just took there time out here without a care in the world and plus they valued their lives alot more back then.Not now it's a race track and ya flip a coin to get out there safe and that's if they let you in.

    If there was EVER a road that is a prime candidate for widening, it's HWY 2. The Sultan Basin used to be empty from 2 back to the "lake".
