20 Years After Same-Sex Marriage Was First Legalized, Gay Couples Reflect on How Their Lives Changed

  • Twenty years ago, Massachusetts became the first state in the U.S. to legally recognize same-sex marriage. Some of the couples who were the first to wed in the state spoke to TIME and shared their stories.
The decision, announced on Nov. 18, 2003, was monumental. “We were all on entirely new ground here. No state in the nation had done this before,” Mary Bonauto, the GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) attorney behind Goodridge tells TIME. It took more than 900 days after the case’s initial filing for plaintiffs to learn that they won, and the SJC gave the legislature half a year until the decision went into effect.
Many recollect different memories of that day. Some speak of the sharpshooters on roofs across Boston, and increased police presence meant to protect them. Most mention being unaware of what was happening around them outside of the great fanfare and support they felt. “As soon as I sat down in the pew, I just couldn't repress the tears,” says Bonauto. “I think it was tears of relief and joy.”
While many young people have grown up in a country that on its face, seems much more LGBTQ+-friendly, acceptance is still fairly recent. It took the U.S. 14 years to catch up to the Netherlands-the first country to legalize same-sex marriage-through the 2015 Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges.
Seventy-one percent of Americans think same-sex marriage should be legal, according to the latest Gallup figures released in 2023. That rate of approval is the highest Gallup has recorded since 1996, when just over 1 in 4 Americans approved. Part of that pivot might be due to the fact that an increasing number of Americans aged 18 to 29 identify as LGBTQ+.
Still, many advocates express fear that the constitutional right to same-sex marriage could be in danger, with Justice Clarence Thomas referencing the possibility of overturning Obergefell in his Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization concurring opinion.

Technically, they are “legal marriages” (aka Civil Unions)…not real marriages. Marriage is a religious institution and is only between a man and a woman.
    Genesis 1:27:
“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

Hebrew Bible, Leviticus Chapter 18 verse 22:
"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.“

Hebrew Bible, Leviticus Chapter 20 verse 13:
"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.”

    New Testament, Matthew 19:
“Jesus answered, ‘Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning "made them male and female", and said, "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh"? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.’”

New Testament, Romans 1:26-27 King James Version (KJV):
“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.”

New Testament, Romans 1:26-27 New International Version (NIV):
“Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

Old Testament, Genesis 2:4-3:24 New International Version (NIV):
“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’
    .
    .
    .
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
    The man said,
‘This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
    she shall be called ”woman”,
for she was taken out of man.’
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
Catechism of the Catholic Church (2357)
    “Chastity and homosexuality
2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’ They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.”

You wrote: "Marriage is a religious institution and is only between a man and a woman."
Actually this is false. Marriage is a civil contract that can include religion and/or a deity, but this is not required.
Also, keep in mind that the USA isn't a theocracy, so what your god and the bible say don't have any authority here except in your personal life.

@@pacnwguy9056 If "Marriage is a religious institution and is only between a man and a woman” is false, then what is your reference that specifies a “marital ceremony” that existed before any of the ancient organized religions and what is the marital ceremony based on (because if marriage was a natural human behavior, it wouldn’t be necessary to specify in any religious text)?
Your third sentence is basically repeating my first. Marriage via a civil contract is called a “civil union”. It’s a legal marriage; as in “legal” under the approval of government...not God.
Many (nearly all) nations recognize marriage as holy matrimony. That doesn’t mean the nation is a theocracy. The US is a Christian based nation. It was founded by Christians. Our Constitution is based on Christian beliefs. Many of our old government landmarks and money say “In God We Trust”. That doesn’t mean we elect clergy or someone who has some kind of divine connection to God or a god as government officials. That is what a theocracy is.
Did you notice I did not say anything about Christianity in my original post (except in the quoted texts that support my comment)? Because the institution of marriage can be found in any religious text (Judaism,Islam,Hinduism, and etc). Even tribal marriages are officiated by priest/shaman. If holy matrimony is not religious (hence the word “holy”), then why is a religious official needed for the ceremony? Which of the old organized religions say marriage is not between a man and woman?
Legal marriage/Civil Union/civil contract (as you call it) is a 21st century social construct to appeal to atheists and pseudo Christians for political votes. Prior to the acceptance of forsaking religion, no one viewed “legal” marriages as marriage because it was socially an abomination to religion and incompatible with nature.
