    I have just spent the last 5 months visiting Northern Cyprus (Turkish Side) alone as a Black female. Firstly, I noticed that before I speak people stare at me constantly and men seem to think I am a sex object, either at the beach or in the streets even though I am not feminine and also have short hair. I also realised that I am then treated like royalty once I speak as I am British, born and raised and feel that I have been treated differently to other black people that are on this Island from Africa. I noticed that on the streets, there is alot of hitchhikers and I saw plenty of white European people being picked up but noticed that black people who hitchhike could be standing on the street for hours and watch as people drive straight passed them. I ended up stopping and picking up hitch hikers on numerous occasions when I realised this was the case and picked up black men and women only, simply because I knew they would have been standing there for ages. One guy I picked up said he had been trying to get a ride for 3 hours, it was pouring down with rain one evening arounnd 10pm and people drove straight passed him. I asked him if this often happened to him and he said, the white people are scared to stop for black people thinking they are dangerous. As for the black women who I picked up, they shared their experiences of being picked up and alot of the time they are asked by the drivers to perform a sex act on them as a favour for picking them up, or try to do inappropriate things. Alot of the Africans that reside in Cyprus are students or have finished their studies and trying to make a life for themselves and are treated very differently to other races. In some establishments, I was starred at alot but like I said my British well spoken language managed to give me a pass wherever I went. People kept asking me where I was from and to be honest, most if not 98% of the places I visited, I was the only black person around. I definately witnessed and experienced an undertone of racism but I did not let it bother me and was extremely friendly to everyone which can make it hard for people to ignore..most times I either got great engagement or received an apology for some inapproriate behaviour where I was prejudged based on what I look like. Northern Cyprus does not seem to get the same amount of tourism as the south and definately not that diverse but there is definately room for change, educating people and teaching them about other cultures.

      Greek ownership of the island is quite recent and as soon as they took over the ruling of the island they immediately started ethnic cleansing a smaller minority group. Not off to a great start I'd say.

    Cyprus is awesome provided one has a lot of wealth/Money/cash/Big bank account. If not then Cyprus is not that much fun. It's a place to go enjoy ones wealth NOT to make money, unless one has some offshore stuff goin on. Or is super ambitious/smart/hardworking or has some money to invest and can make it happen but not too many of those people around. I've seen a whole bunch try and fail in Cyprus. Go for holiday? YES, great reason to go... BUT to permanently live there??? If one can afford to then go ahead it is very pretty place, I like the weather a lot and low crime rates for sure. The people are educated and hardworking, sometimes... Lol

      @Konnor, No it didn't.
      What happened in Cyprus was probably like 100x worse. There is no concerted ethnic cleansing effort like there was in Cyprus between the 1950s and 170s.
      Yea war sucks for the Ukrainians but unlike the minority group on Cyprus they aren't subject to a targeted ethnic cleansing campaign.

    • @konnor9577
      @konnor9577 Před 2 lety

      Ethnic cleansing was happening from the Turkish side. 2 paramilitary forces from both sides created a vendetta and the victims were civilians. Even though the greeks were the original population for thousands of years, turkey wanted to exterminate the entire population of greeks and many Turkish leaders clearly made this statement. Minister Mevlut wrote a book in early 2000 saying that even without a single Turkish cypriot in the island, turkey must be stupid not to invade and claim terriority. The reason Cyprus has its own government is cause of the revolution of EOKA against the British colonisers. In that period, the leftist and turkish Cypriots were betraying the fighters and many times as paybacks, the British police forces were using the turkish cypriots to murder entire groups of people.

      Bro, if you learn the history, you'll find out that if Greece, which was a nationalistic chauvinistic dictatorship back then, hadn't made a coup in 15th July 1974 against the legal Cyprus government, Turkey could never had the chance to invade Cyprus and destroy our homeland.
      There was a secret agreement between Greece and Turkey to divide the island 80%-20% in order for the governments to be glorified because they extended the borders. And these are the results.

      Greece, which was then under a nationalist chauvinistic dictatorship used the power it had in the Cyprus Army and made a coup against Cyprus Republic's legal government in order to annex Cyprus. So technically it was Greece who made an invasion on Cyprus first, thus giving Turkey the advantage to use the right it had according to the Cyprus constitution to intervene on Cyprus when the legal government was overthrown.
      Unfortunately, as everyone in their right mind would anticipate (surely not the coup conductors), Turkey INVADED the island, it did not simply intervened to restore order and then leave. 6 000 people were murdered, 220 000 were made refugees and 1 619 were reported missing. 36% of the island fell under turkish occupation and this is History as we know it today.

Average Cypriot driver thinks that bikes and bicycles are imaginary things and they don't notice them. Also they are very distractive, old (cause there are no pulbic transportation) and then you have the tourists that are confused driving from the left side of the road..
