A Riverside walk. The River Mersey Stockport.

  • In this video we go on a short riverside walk down the river Mersey in Stockport just to the south of Manchester. We spot all sorts of caves in the sandstone and tunnels in the riverbank. Remnants of old industry these are fascinating. Possible waterway outlets and tailraces from mills or waterwheels. Industrial weirs and bridges. We also take a quick look at the Stockport Viaduct and its 11 million bricks. This Victorian Industrial landscape requires more investigation.

I've been in those caves back in the 80s. I grew up in Edgeley. You used to be able to access them via a couple of Archways on the road above (Brinksway) but they are bricked up now. There was also a small building, near to where the VW garage is now, you could get into them through there, but I think that has gone too. The caves were used as air raid shelters during the war and there were still some bunk bed frames and smashed up toilets down there back then. If you need to know anything I may be able to help a bit. Although I only went down them once as I remember. We used to call them Maggie's Caves.

Came here to mention those, you can see them on Google Streetview on Brinksway. I've been wanting to know if anyone has done an explore of them for ages.

Yes maggies caves used to go in there 40 years ago. It was a fair size air raid shelter. There was also the ones on underbank opposite the precinct behind the big billboards near the taxi rank. Brings back great memories 👍👍

There's miles of caves that could be accessed along Brinksway and I probably like you spent many an hour as a kid in late 50's early 60's exploying them. The caves you see in the above video we called the 'Seven Sisters' and are all linked together, but they do not lead to the wider system of caves.

    Fascinating.
    Ive not commented ever before,
But i must say the subjects you cover,
And the way you present it,
Is some of the best stuff ive seen on y.t or tinternet ever.
(And im a proper boring googler that googles EVERYTHING history, geography, t.v/ film and music)
I love our beautiful town, and all its surroundings,
And knowing i'll never get to fulfil my own missions exploring all the nooks and crannies, then watching your films is the next best thing.
Please continue and keep it going,
I must be just one of perhaps tens of thousands that love it.
    Thankyou.
    Bob,
    Sale.
(Work in mcr t.c where our building drops into the Irwel.
Which is also a fascinating thing)

Don't forget that three rivers (Tame, Goyt and Mersey) join at Stocky ;) Stocky was mostly felt works making hats (IIRC) The term 'Mad as a hatter' comes from working the felt into hats and the chemicals used sending the workers mad. There were a lot of bleaching beds over the river at Heaton Mersey where linen would be bleached. I lived in Stockport (well, Woodley) for a few months and I really liked the town. I miss it. :)

Hi Martin, If you take the river footpath away from Stockport town centre towards Heaton Mersey/ Didsbury there are remnants of the old Cheshire Lines railway viaduct that once crossed the Mersey. There are large buttresses on both sides of the river. The buttress on the far side appears to have a pathway through it. The viaduct buttress on the path side lies back from the riverside by approx 50 yards so you would need to have a scout around for this one, but it's a tallish structure. There is a path that takes you to the top of this buttress so you can then get an idea of the angle at which it joins the structure on the far side. This was all part of the Heaton Mersey East junction where the Midland Lines seemed to run along with and across the Cheshire Lines. If you go slightly inland from the river at this point you can see by the lie of the land how the various old lines ran on top of embankments etc. There are pictures on the interweb of old steam trains crossing the viaduct if you are interested. Thanks for your interesting videos, it's good to see you filming in the Stockport area.

Exciting location Martin where you have been, that was clearly visible. 👍🏻💪🏻
I wonder if and how you want to get to the other side, I think maybe by boat.
Anyway, I really appreciate your commitment and motivation for me to find a wonderfully exciting and historic place location every time, you know that. Martin your are sweet, and you explain everything in a fun and spontaneous way.
I hope I keep seeing you, love Roos 🙋🏻‍♀️🤗👍🏻🥳🥰

Great to see you in the Stockport area, there's so much to see in the area to keep you busy making videos for weeks. The viaduct arches closest to Stockport railway station was used in one of your favorite films , A taste of honey as was the church in the market place. Can't wait for next weeks video.

very interesting Martin. That bit of machinery Dan spotted looked vaguely like some sort of 'windlass' or 'gate valve' ?
Judging by where stuff is hanging in the branches that river gets quite high now and again .

Martin, you need to walk the other way towards Parrswood, there was a bleach works and old railway structures. Going to the other side of Stockport was Tiviot Dale Station, off Lancashire Hill and where Tesco's is. Good hunting.

The river flows onward through the southern part of Didsbury and Northenden. It was here, in about 1956, where I slipped off the muddy bank into the river at the Northenden Golf Course. I was on my bike at the time, so that ended up in the water too. I was on my own that day, so it was a Herculean task to scramble back onto dry-ish land with the bike.
I can't recall if my mam said anything about my muddy, dripping wet state on returning home, I certainly didn't get the safety lecture I was expecting.

Hello Martin, firstly just want to say how much I enjoy your videos. I'm very much into history and old industry myself. I'm a stockport lad but I now live in Hollingworth, just up the road from the River Etherow. I've got a fantastic book of stockport aerial photos, that date from the 1920s to now. I have a picture of where you were stood next to brinksway weir. Their is a rather large mill that would have been where you were stood. Let me know if you want any of these pictures. Kind regards Ryan Hazlewood.

I'm a Stocky lad. I'm from Stockport. And the amount of scousers I've wound up about the Mersey flowing thru Stockport ...we had a song at football. Something about throwing shopping trolleys in the Mersey and scousers fishing them out to use as prams. You had to be there obviously

The bridge near bus station you was filming on near end of video is brand new. There was a row of houses (Astley street) from Heaton lane to the river and my nanna lived in the end one. In 1975 my nannas back garden and outside toilet collapsed into the river. There was a picture in the Stockport express at the time.

If there are lots of mills, you can expect some of those to be tailrace outlets.
The curved weir seves 2 purposes, one is for strength (like how a dam is) the other is for length, you sometimes ee weirs with a lot more curve (like one at bath) seach for bath curved weir, or with multiple curves (labyrinth weir) where more surface area is in use as the river gets higher
