Hand hauling the Fish Locker Lobster pots - Crabs, Lobsters and an idiot!!! | The Fish Locker

  • We love working a small number of lobster pots from our small family boat. Such a wonderful and rewarding experience that often brings delicious rewards. Hauling our lobster traps by hand makes it all the more worthwhile when you catch something to eat. Join me as I check out pots and talk you through the things we catch. Including conservation regulations that are in place in Cornwall. In this video you see me make a real schoolboy error that results in my dinner going back into the sea. What an idiot I am sometimes. Still, it all works out well in the end.

    You didn't 'lose' that first of-size lobster; the sea just took it back. The fact that you could laugh at yourself and shrug it off meant you were rewarded in the next string for your patience and humor~ ;)

    Hi Matey, love watching you haul your creels. I was a recreational lobster fisher around Strangford Lough in Co. Down. I did it for 45 years, I m now 75 and have had to give it up for health reasons, so it’s a treat for me follow your escapades on CZcams. My kids all grew up with lobster fishing, we lived inland but had a mobile home on the coast, the kids used to get really annoyed if I went to the creels without them, but sometimes the tides dictated when you had to go. I really miss it, although I remain friendly with local professional fishermen with whom I always got on well, they would look after my interests and I theirs.
    As an unlicensed fisherman I was only allowed 5 creels after the conservation measures came in, notching, size limits etc, not that I minded, I had always returned small lobsters and hens in berry, they were our future as I learned from the locals, it was great to see the difference these measures made as the years went by, bigger and more plentiful lobsters, the change was amazing.
    I hope you won’t mind if I comment on one thing, I think you tend to steam a bit too fast for a lone fisherman when you are shooting your rebaited creels, if you were to get snared by a rope, you might not be able reach the controls before you were pulled over the side, every lobster fisherman’s nightmare.
    Keep the vids coming!.
    David.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  Před 2 lety +4

      That comment is very valid and it maybe just looks that way from the camera angle. It isn’t very fast and I do prep the ropes and area before shooting so it’s safe. You will understand the need for being motoring along so the pots are stretched out. 👍🏻🦞🦀

    Great video upload. You are human after all since you make mistakes too with the saga picking-up the lobster and accidently letting it go back in to the sea. Regardless of this isolated situation your lobster pots did rather well with gathering those crabs and the lobsters that you did. An enjoyable and entertaining video - funny too with your facial expressions following losing the lobster. Thanks for sharing.

PS, I was a college lecturer for decades, hospitality management, trained chefs, including Tom Kerridge, so will say that you are spot on withe cooking shellfish etc, never knew how to get razor clams until you showed me the salt method. I truly love the fact that you not only practice sustainable fishing and education about the ocean and it’s inhabitants. I would LOVE if you could get hooked up with Nat Geo or BBC America to do an actual special. For now, I enjoy watching your videos, from my home in the desert of New Mexico!!!

    Great video John. Good to see so many lobsters being caught, must be good for the future. Love the initiatives to increase the lobster numbers around the coast of the UK. Your lobster hatchery video from last year was excellent.Cheers Milo
