    I have absolutely no one to talk about this since none of my friends surf and honestly don’t like talking to random surfers on the beach but holy shit catching waves is so hard. I skate, snowboard but holy shit surfing is a whole nother game. I’m starting out on a short board cause I wanna slash and turn, but holy fuck I either pop up too early or pop up too late, wipe out, then have to paddle back out and then I’m all tired out getting crashed at by oncoming mini waves

    When I first tried this I thought "No way!" I'm so used to pushing off my toes it seemed impossible, but with sustained practice it's really not so difficult. I'll even go as far as to say it's slightly easier than using your toes, certainly has a more natural feel to it anyway. So if you think you can't do it stick with it and you'll see you can.

    • @j3in725
      @j3in725 Před 5 lety +2

      Exactly, I would recommend holding your feet in the air when paddling as well, so when you pop up you have to pop up all at once and not make the mistake of trying to push with your toes, because that will create drag and hodl you out of the wave

      Jean me and my mates are all over 60, and most of us don’t “jump” up any more. It’s wedge back foot on tail and then spring up swing front foot on. So still a two step but fast and stable. Plus you always know backfoots where you want it to be.

      @@safetybeachlife are you doing this on a shortboard though? Am 52 years old and getting back into surfing after a 6 year layoff. Am finding it hard to pop up on a shortboard and fast moving wave. Am trying out different variations to see what is easiest aside from surfing everyday. 😆

      cnghiem67 same technique on a fat 6’2 fish/groveller, and my big boy fish 7’2. If I’m on my 9’1 I might use mt toes out of reflex. I’ll have to check it out next time I surf it. I don’t really think a o bout it. If you can swing both legs through at the same time, go for it. I just can’t do it anymore. Plus I’ve got a bad back, so it’s better to move smoothly not explosively

      @@safetybeachlifeinteresting. Thanks for the info. Am trying/ doing a variation of what you are saying because I can still spring up for now after a few warmups. Am trying to spring up with back foot first then swinging front foot underneath. Kind of a 1.3-1.5 step process.😅 It would be neat to see a video of you doing your technique. It would be neat to see Jerry Lopez's pop up these days.

    You are totally right because it is also in my eyes the biggest mistake for a beginner to change too fast from a longboard to a 6'' Shortboard. These are two completely different worlds because a longboard is ways easier to ride than a shortboard. Therefore it is as you say ways better to go slowly size by size down until you land on a 6" or even smaller shortboard. This way it is much easier to get used to a shorter board and to get in the end enough practice to ride a 6" or less shortboard. Otherwise you lose a lot of energy and time for nothing than frustration. And with they way you explained a beginner will keep fun while progressing and this is all what surfing is about.😉

    Great advice but I notice on land while practicing, her feet land nearly simultaneously but on the wave, her back foot lands much earlier. The contact points are the same, chest, hands and knees. As a 52 year old guy who has been completely away from surfing for the last 6 years, popping up on a shortboard and fast moving wave has been very challenging. Am trying a couple of different variations and training tools since water time is limited. Perhaps accentuate landing the initial back foot up first will help. Another helpful hint for beginners once the pop up has been mastered is to pop up on a variation of a balance board, perhaps one or two small towel in the middle/ stringer section of a board. The practice board can be a long enough piece of plywood. This will teach you to maintain and land the pop up while in balance. Being balanced while pushing yourself up and getting ready to pop up is a workout for your core and whatever else muscle group. Let me know if this helps you guys.

      @@puravidaadventuressurfyoga9877 where in Costa Rica are you guys located? To even get fancier with the pop up practice, once they have mastered the pop up on a balance board, the next step is to pop up with this balance board on an incline with the board headed various degrees off the fall line. This will simulate an angle takeoff where one rail is pushed more into the wave face than the other, all the while maintaining balance during and after the pop up. Been thinking about this a lot as I have been trying to get back into great surfing shape without actuary surfing.

Why a lot of beginners (including me) land too far forward on the board? True, the back foot can be moved backwards easily, but the front foot gets stuck if you land too far forward. Hi Ella! You'll want to go down in size gradually... moving to a short board too quickly can make paddling for waves and popping up extremely difficult (and that's not fun!). Try a board that is a similar shape to your foam board, but a few inches shorter. Once you feel comfortable on that, try a smaller size. Good luck and keep surfing! You cut away to surfing footage when you were explaining feet position and the board and yourself are not fully in the frame. You have great knowledge, I wish you would pay more attention to the viewers experience.

    Is it okay to start on shortboard? I'm frustrated because I can't even stand and ride the waves like other people do. What I tried is a 5'8 fishboard and that is also my height.
    I already seen what I did wrong in this video and I think I can do it right but still it would be a lot more harder than a longboard for a beginner, well the more the pain the more the rewards rI can reap right? 🤔 😂✌

      Hey Jer! The longboard is the best friend of a beginner surfer! It's the best place to start, hands down. It will offer you the stability and control that you cannot get on a short board. At our retreats, all of our beginner students receive instruction on longboards, and many are up and catching their own green waves after a few days! It's the most fun and efficient way to learn. :) Come and see us in Costa Rica for a week of amazing instruction! www.puravidaadventures.com

    I really like your advice and tips but this video is very poorly shot and edited. Some of the important visual references aren’t even in the frame and there are SOME things you’re explaining that need to be illustrated with you talking to the camera rather than with clips of surfers.
