Before I had tarantulas, the tiny enclosures HORRIFIED me. Dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, even fish really need space. My tarantulas never really move once they pick their favourite spot.
Coming to tarantulas from keeping reptiles literally my entire life, enclosure size was my biggest hurdle. I started by keeping slings in way too big of enclosures because more space=better ........for (most) reptiles. I learned first hand that it's just wasted space. When people say things about enclosure size, it's definitely someone from outside of the hobby. And the educational route you took with making this video is the best response.
honestly alot of snakes benefit from smaller enclosures when theyre young. i work with and breed boiga, asian ratsnakes, and other shy and sensitive species.
the way ive gotten everyone on frozen thawed and starting to thrive is to keep them in a smaller setup, preferably pvc so they have protection on all but one side where the sliding glass is, smaller setups also allow me to monitor feces and sheds and whatnot. once theyve eaten regularly for about 2ish months they get moved to a larger display enclosure. some dont get accustomed and have to go back into a smaller setup until theyre confident, but most acclimate just fine ! babies are very sensitive and easy to frighten so they take a little longer than the larger fellas.
I 100% agree with this. It was strange to me going down to such much enclosures going from reptiles to tarantulas, especially for my slings. They’re so much safer, easier to keep track of, feed etc when in a properly sized enclosure for them to be safe.
Unfortunately, I lost a sling because I put her in too big of an enclosure and she had trouble finding the prey. Smaller enclosures are better for ambush predators.
I remember how I used to feel sad watching people pull egg sacs, but then I educated myself about tarantulas and the whole "instinct vs maternal response". It helped me realize the female protecting it was not so much of a sentience issue but rather more of a programmed response to maximize success of the spiderlings survival. I also saw how some sacs got eaten and I understood the importance of helping the slings by getting them into a nursing pot when possible. The key thing is to research and educate. I would never think to chastise someone when I myself knew so little. I have a bunch now and am always still learning, but I am certainly humble enough to not perch myself up on a high horse and preach about something I know little about.

I got called out for putting my C. darlingii sling in a tarantula cribs sling enclosure. What people don't realize is that they use ALL of the space. It created a huge tunnel network using the entirety of the enclosure, "above" and below ground. It has so much room. :D

She comes out once in a great while but only at night (we see her web evidence lol) but she's perfectly happy and healthy staying in her hole. Lol
For a while when I gave her more substrate, we couldn't find her at all. But now tiny windows of her burrow are against the glass. So we get to see a couple legs or a butt sometimes 😂

That’s exactly what I learned was how badly they stress in larger areas also the factor they can get injured from a fall like when it comes to have to much height and they land in their very fragile abs

You are doing amazing. Some people just want to criticize just because they can. Tarantulas don't wander and explore in the wild they just hang out near their burrow conserving energy waiting for food. House spiders are the same way they don't wander far from their webs so they are ready when food arrives.

Can you confidently say zoos have the animals best interest at heart? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to the zoo and the animals enclosures are just full of concrete and disgusting water. Zoos function just like every other business and cut costs to save money. They don’t give a fuck about the animals. I’m sure some of the keepers do but that’s it.
So the ‘pacing’ phenomenon of bears or big cats in zoos is just normal, happy mammal behavior?
@@Ilostmyairpod those are the zoo's you want to stay away from. Any zoo who keeps an animal in those conditions isn't a zoo you want to support.
All reputable zoo's have huge enclosures with plenty of enrichment and space for there animals will be listed as a breeding facilities for endangered species and go above and beyond for the wealthfare of there animals.
I don't know what zoo's you have been visiting but the only ones I know like that are Chinese and they don't give two flying ones.
@@tinatschka3217Not all 'pacing' behavior is stereotypy. Big cats do patrol their territories back and forth very often and they are often known for pacing right before dinner as they anticipate food.
I went to a local tarantula breeder and was inquiring about getting a pet spider, she asked how big my enclosure was and I said I had a 46 gallon tank and she said that was wayyy too big. I didn’t get anything but had a respect for the shop owner
Omg, that's so cute that your botanical gardens has a big ole tarantula enclosure, and her name is Vivian! :D I did feel some of the more decorated enclosures felt small in your videos, but then I'd see the spider in question and... yeah. Ratios! I think the main thing people see coming from other popular Tarantula keeping CZcams channels is the overall size of enclosures, but not particularly seeing the difference in the spider being housed.

Coming in here to add that I have random spiders living in my house and garage, and even with an entire house/garage, a spider makes a web in the windowsill or in a corner by a door, and then they NEVER leave that space (unless something intervenes). They are the Hobbits of invertebrates.
Hey Kat! I just wanted to say that I used to be terrified of spiders. Your videos were the ones (also Tom Moran and Dark Den) that encouraged me to get a Tarantula to help me overcome that fear. I have an awesome shop near me, in Princeton WV, called the Tye Dye Tarantula, where I got my first (and now all 9!!!!) Tarantula. I got this huge enclosure for my first one, a G. Pulchripes sling I named Grimm, and when I came to the shop with the enclosure, the shop owner educated me on the fact that tarantulas don't need THAT much space, and how actually it can be harder for them to find their water and prey because they don't venture far from their burrows. So a smaller enclosure is actually much more helpful to them because they don't have to go as far to "find" food and water, especially since prey will often hide. And prey that hides can be dangerous to spiders because if they don't find it before they molt, prey items will actually attack and eat a vulnerable tarantula that is molting or is freshly molted. I now have 9 tarantulas and a true spider (a grass spider sling that I rescued from the red runners I bought), and everyone is happy and healthy in the same size enclosures I see on your videos. Thank you so much for your knowledge and for being real, and explaining things in a kind and professional manner. Also, I now have a new respect for all insects that I never had before. This week I found a praying mantis in my kitchen and instead of freaking out I calmly guided it into a catch cup and released it into my flower garden, and today I at work I found a lightening bug on the wall that I caught and safetly put into a bush outside. Everyone at work calls me "the bug lady," and they know to come to me if there is an insect (especially a spider) that they find so that I can take it back outside. You have changed my thinking on these amazing creatures, so thank you so much. You are awesome!!!!

It’s incredible how many people have no idea how to keep animals or think their assumptions are right and attack those with much more experience/animals without giving a thought to their being a reason why something is done a certain way. Social media age at its finest.
I’m sick of seeing people putting human emotions and needs on reptiles and spiders. Huge cages for snakes and spiders can cause more problems than good. Your doing a great job with your collection!
especially important with slings to have an appropriate ratio of spider to enclosure size. "massive" enclosures for them are super stress inducing, because when small they're super vulnerable to predation. some outgrow their smol spaces quickly and get rehoused. and others, like my b. baumgartni, are Slow growers. she's almost 2 now and from front leg foot to opposite rear leg foot she still fits on my thumbnail 😅 i've rehoused her twice, once for mold bloom and once because she was stressed and couldn't find prey-because her enclosure was too large.

People are ridiculous! My first GBB sling refused to eat for weeks because the enclosure they came with was to big and it was stressing them out. As soon as I moved them to a smaller enclosure they ate right away!
"MY" beloved and amazing "FATHER" raised curly haired tarantulas and a few other species throughout my childhood, some 45 Yrs.ago.
The information wasn't as studied and accurate as of todays info, of course.

As I stated in a question in the comments before. This unidentified species of speckled back and striped legged beauty took up residence in the front of our busy pantry. Why, I dont know, lol. She has made her webbed up zone to catch what comes by and has a burrowed spot she is nearly always in. I didnt force it, prob wouldn't have chose it. Been 9 months now! She still creeps out my son... Anyways she has all the pantry to rome and only stays where she burrowed. So all this to say as a complete amateur "I concur with all you have said in this video reponse".

Maybe we can identify it but we're gonna need more information, since you can't share a pic here. A spider with speckled back and stripped legs that makes a web inside a house and stays put sounds like Steatoda sp. (maybe Steatoda triangulosa) or Parasteatoda sp. (Parasteatoda tepidariorum?). But that's just a wild guess, considering I don't even know where you live
You can try asking r/spider or r/entomology reddit what the spider is.

What an educational video, Kat! About the tarantulas not exactly seeing and how jumping spiders rely on it. Don’t worry about people who complain at you. Like you said, uneducated people make uneducated comments. You’re awesome and you’ve helped me get over my fear of spiders. Which has kinda transferred to the rest of my life.. it’s teaching me patience and understanding and how I can decide to try and not be so afraid of things and I can try and tolerate if I choose.
There's a good reason they stay near their burrow too. People fail to understand how many other animals will happily eat them given the chance, so staying near their burrow is in their best interest. :)
The joys of working on social media, there'll always be haters and people who don't understand the things you do even if you're making yourself very clear.

Unfortunately, some people do not research before trying to preach their opinions. Great video content to prove the point of enclosure size when it comes to tarantulas. Well done. 👏
I think the “wtf factor” for me is how people just assume they know more. I’m not a spider keeper, still slowly overcoming fears, just became a snake keeper a couple weeks ago. But I defer to people with more experience and knowledge than myself. Do people not know how to communicate? Questions can be asked without accusations. What’s so hard about a simple “ hey, I noticed your enclosures are smaller than I expected. Is there a reason for that? Can you do a do a general care/enclosure setup tutorial? Or do you already have one or another resource you could point me to?”
I think people assume it’s common sense to give more space, but like you said some species of animals like cramped secure places. I’m one of them 😂 What is inarguably common sense though is to not show up spouting off “facts” without doing research and informing yourself. It just makes you look like an 🫏.
Your information about T’s and the required homes is fantastic. I have had to explain the same thing to people many times. Excellent videos, always educating for us newbies..
What these people don’t realize is that tarantulas (especially females) almost never leave their burrows, unless they’re a mature male or the burrow has been flooded, and if they do it’s usually not very far
They live in a vast space in the wild, but they dig out spaces that they can cozy up in. They do not want too big of a space because that can leave room for unwanted visitors.
I have a 25 gallon for my Chilean, and he burrows in one spot but will come out to sit and hang out, but the only thing he does with the rest of the space is put webbing everywhere lol.
I don’t have a tarantula..yet. I plan on having one or a few in the future once I am able. But when I first started watching videos on them I was confused why they were in such small enclosures and I thought that the people keeping them were not taking care of them the way they should be. But the more videos I watched and the more research I did I found out that they really don’t need a lot of space and they are pretty low maintenance. I am truly fascinated with spiders and how they live. I do as of right now have a jumping spider, I believe he is a Phidippus regius/regal jumping spider and his name is Eddie. I am a huge fan of jumpers and I’d like to say I know a lot about them. I’m so glad I did my research and now know how different spiders live or I would still be wondering why people were “not taking care of them correctly”. I love your videos Kat! I’ve learned so much from you!
I think many people assume that like dogs and cats, critters in terrariums want to wander around all the time and that the 'small' place is harmful to them. They can't wrap their head around the fact that a tarantula will not run seven marathons every night. I had a similar conversation about snakes and terrarium sizes, if you have a species of snake that lays around waiting for prey in the wild, there will be no use of the extra space in a bigger terrarium. (I know the minimum size is important, I'm talking about way too big enclosures )
I always wondered why the enclosures are so small but since I don't know a lot about spiders I try not to judge. Anyway, thanks for the educational video! I'd love to see more educational videos about spiders!
While I haven’t had comments on tarantula videos about the size of the enclosures, but people who come over always ask why they are on small enclosures (they aren’t lol). I also try to explain that they seem to seem more secure in their enclosures when they. For example, I rehoused my OBT, she isn’t that big, but the only enclosure I had that was bigger was a 5 gal. I put her in there, she never comes out of her big hide. She made a big tunnel and pokes out lol. She will grow into the rest of it some I’m not worried.
I personally think your enclosure sizes are perfect, and it also depends on the species of tarantula and spider aswell. ❤
Meanwhile, I have a spider that has lived inside my car's side mirror for over a year. Has the entire world at their disposal, but chooses to stay put... must be plenty of space 🙂

~~Had a Rose tarantula in lil' 5 gallon&seemed perfectly content. Only time it ventured beyond the area burrowed is when crickets camped out there.
~~It got to where I could lay my hand out&she'd go into my palm. Put her on my elbow,from there she'd go up&sit on my left shoulder for as long as I let her. I also had a Black Emperor scorpion that did the same&be on my right shoulder but only for about 5min though. Considering how anxious they tend to be chilling for 5 min probably felt like a month?

I absolutely love your channel and adore you oddly enough though I’m still terrified of spiders but am an animal lover and will never harm one ever when I see spiders especially in lake George where I vacation every year with my family they are all over my daughter who loves spiders will just pick it up and put it outside or somewhere safe but Kat you are making me less and less freaked out even my family is shocked at how calm I’ve been when I see one I think your amazing, funny and an all around great person you take very good care of all your pets and you explained in this video amazingly I loved it like always

Large open spaces i hear can stress a Tarantula. They feel vaulnerable and uncomfortable and perfer small crammed areas (hence their burrows and logs they live in) they feel safer that way.

On a more serious note - I think it’s difficult for people to comprehend how animals as small as spiders, tarantulas and insects think.. that tarantula isn’t getting in an enclosure and, for example, admiring the tiny mushrooms, thanking Kat for her addition of leaf litter, saying hello to the cohabiting springtails - it’s instinct is to hide and to stay hidden, conserve energy for their next prey. And that’s all they have - instinct. Wandering = danger. Burrow/hide/web = safe. Wait for food.

I have a very large bio set up for my T. apophysis- lots of lovely places for her to roam…. yeh, I’ve never seen her out and about. She always hangs down in her burrow under cork bark. Def not ‘Dora the explorer’ 🥳😁
Great video and really interesting to see the one at the botanical gardens. I think the one you have who abandoned her original spacious burrow and chose the tiny safe place under the leaf instead proves the point :) I have a few who have done the same. And as others have mentioned, a big enclosure is not only a waste of space but also can make the tarantula scared and end up just crunched up in a corner with nowhere cramped enough to feel safe.

Such a good explanation. I used to be afraid of these cuties, but now I'm just fascinated by them. And at first I did think to myself about the enclosure size, but even I noticed that they don't really care, as long as they have a hiding spot, they're just gonna chill there.
Another thing that came to mind, watching the video. Maybe an update of the rest of your pets (that you wanna include). I know it's mainly spooder content, just maybe it would be interesting for new people, and for us curious, nosy peeps too :pp ❤
Your responses to these are great! If it were me, I'd be so ANNOYED! That person sounded accusing and quite rude too. Like, do these people not do research before asking these questions??? Ugh! Also, I don't think you were being that snarky, your responses are justified and you handled it really well! People forget that tarantulas LOVE smallish spaces. They like it cosy! People need to stop comparing them to fish, rabbits, cats, etc that need a lot of space. Tarantulas have totally different requirements. Heck, spiders in general do. I'm an animal lover too and these people who asked the questions need to start doing their own research and stop making accusations.
I under that before getting into the hobby, I knew nothing about caring for tarantulas. Still learning about each one of mine, but as they grow, I will provide a bigger place. My two adult males are definitely roaming around, but I don’t plan on breeding them.
I have various species within various enclosures, my AF T albo is in a 30x30x30cm with lots of substrate and she digs out her burrow and basically stays down there venturing out occasionally, I have a big AF LP in a 60x45x30cm and she stays in virtually one spot out on show, It’s obvious to me that the person has no knowledge of tarantulas where as you Kat have loads, people need to research before getting up on there pedestal, they would have moaned if you kept reptiles or cats and dogs, because it’s tarantulas doesn’t matter, your awesome ❤

I always feel that the people who make rude comments are the type that are jealous of those who are very successful in what they do. I have a few old world tarantulas and a couple of them I call pet holes since they never come out of their burrows except to grab a roach when it’s feeding time. The others are arboreal and spend a lot of time in cork rounds. I find spiders and scorpions much better company then most people 🕷️🕷️🕷️🦂🦂🦂🖤🖤🖤
In my opinion and I have had tarantulas since I was nine years old and I am 51 now, they prefer a smaller enclosures because I think it makes them feel more secure. The most I have had at one time was around 380 not including the egg sacks.❤❤❤
I have had a spider in the corner of my office window for a couple of weeks now. It has a small web, and sits hidden in the corner when it is not either tending its web or out getting catch from the web. It does not explore, nor does it go on sunday trips to the other end of the window. The window is open most of the day, so it can just leave. It dont. It likes it corner.

totally understand the concern, most other pets one can keep more space is always better. but the audacity to just point their condemning finger at you before thinking "I wonder WHY she keeps them in such small enclosures?" it's just, so silly lol

I've found that most obnoxious comments on Instagram always come from people that don't follow your channel. The weird thing is you can always tell when they're trying to get a response from you and usually they're doing that by making a negative or a really obnoxious comment. It's even weirder when you see that these people making these comments are adults. I generally feel bad for people that feel like they have to post a negative comment when they can just as easily move on without saying anything. They feel like they have to make a spectacle of themselves which is such a narcissistic thing to do. They're probably doing this all day long to other people's videos and posts too and they probably forget what comments they made until someone reply's to it. It's really sad when you think about it.
