    Yvonne your puppet was cute: "And what was the other one?" You're burning calories while you sift your wheat. We take for granted all the labor and time that is involved in getting to the finished product. Impressive machine you have. Great teaching video that kids could watch in the classroom.

      Hi Wendy ! I agree there has been a disconnect form the food we buy in the grocery store to the actual labour of growing it and getting it ready for consumption, thank you for watching and commenting.

    • @solarbrianyvonne
      @solarbrianyvonne  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes the wheat we grow is organic and because we don't spray chemicals on the land the harvest has lots of weed seeds in it, comes into the combine like a dogs breakfast... a total mess ! but with 100 year old equipment you can still clean it up and use it and make nutritious flour and bread.

    Thanks for sharing this process. I'm from Iowa and have seen this type of equipment before at county fairs and small museums. Was wondering what you do with the waste. (Chaff and weed seeds) I figured the chaff could be used as nesting material for chickens. Maybe the seeds could be wild bird feed.

    • @solarbrianyvonne
      @solarbrianyvonne  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Bryan , Our organic land provides food, fuel, heat and bedding all because we don't spray our crops!
      I use waste seeds as fuel! Wild mustard can be crushed down into oil and that oil can be used to run your diesel tractor or diesel car and or heat your home . One bushel of mustard seed makes about 9 litres of fuel... Mustard oil has a higher cetane rating than diesel. Diesel has about a 48 Cetane rating, wild mustard comes in at about 53 Cetane, all the other weed seeds go into out shop pellet stove and provide free heat all winter long.
      Yes the Chaff makes great nesting material, chickens love it and its easy to clean out the pen when you need to... way easier than pulling up matted straw.

      @bryansloesshillshomestead4523 Před 3 lety +1

      @@solarbrianyvonne thanks for answering my questions. You gave me a great insight on how you do things. I find it interesting. I try to save my self money by reusing things. I have a diesel car and truck. I need to come up with an alternative fuel source for them. I scoop up beans, bean meal, and sometimes corn that get dumped outside of the bean plant along the shoulder of the road that my wife and son work at. Truck drivers clean out their hoppers after leaving the plant. I scoop up the beans, meal, and corn and use them for feed for my pigs and chicken. I have a walk behind tractor and baler. I bale grass from the shoulder of the highway by my place after the county road department mows during the summer. I feed these bales to my miniature horses. I bale leaves in the fall and use the leaf bales for the chicken house bedding. Chickens love scratching through the leaves and finding pieces of grass and such to eat. Every little bit helps.

      @@bryansloesshillshomestead4523 Diesel engines were created before Diesel fuel existed. They used to call a diesel engine the peanut engine because it ran on peanut oil. Most older diesel engines can run on a veggie plant oil no problem. I purchased a diesel conversion kit that after installed you can run on alternative fuel. The kit includes a second fuel tank and heating systems to heat the oil so its easier to pump. When people drive too close behind me on the highway they get a burger and fries smell and they get the munchies when there are no restaurants around for miles! its hilarious to watch their reactions !

    • @bryansloesshillshomestead4523
      @bryansloesshillshomestead4523 Před 3 lety +1

      @@solarbrianyvonne I have seen those kits and considered getting one. I figured I could probably buy the components cheaper and put the system together myself. Do you have any issues with the kit?

    • @solarbrianyvonne
      @solarbrianyvonne  Před 3 lety

      @@bryansloesshillshomestead4523 You will need a tank glycol heater ( arctic fox) is the best and stay away from the plastic pollak valves ( they are are junk) use a metal body valve like a hydroforce 3 and buy and install the 12 volt pre heater just before the injection pump to make sure the oil is hot before it gets into the injection pump.... Make sure there is a purge circuit to purge the WVO out of the system 1 minute prior to shut off. My system starts on diesel till the motor is up to temp, then switches over to WVO for the entire drive then purges its self back to diesel just before shutdown.

    Do you think it might be worth running the wheat through a second time, or is the wheat clean enough the first time?

    • @solarbrianyvonne
      @solarbrianyvonne  Před 2 lety +1

      yes Most definitely, if the grain has lots of weed seeds in it we run it through twice , its just so much faster than picking through and removing the tiny rocks and bits of dirt. We still have to pick through it like we show on the video, but its much quicker.
