  • Join me to discover where the woodchoppers chop in Lapland. Setting out from Rovaniemi, I hiked through heavy snow along a partially frozen river. Admiring the rural landscapes, eventually I reached the Forestry Museum. But things did not go to plan.

Pretty much all wooden houses were build with logs here prior to WW2, so even if it is covered with paneling (boards), underneath it is still the log frame. Paneling over the logs became common in mid 1800's. My house is built in 1804 and paneling was added to it in early 1900's, now we took it off to repair some of the logs.

So interesting. I never would have guessed. I bet it helps with the insulation.

they fell trees in winter and then at summer same men transported those logs along rivers keeping them flow and not build up log dams, rapids were the hard part. that big boat were used to tow large log rafts across the lake.

So nice that you walk to places! You see so much more of how the locals live when walking. Good for your health and for the planet as well. Also, thanks for appreciating the grounds of the museum and not being really bothered for things not going according to plan.
