Both poor beers imo but one at least is a shadow of a once decent beer ruined by big owners cutting corners the other has been built from the ground up as a cynical attempt to grab sales and has never even tried to be good.
'You have that amber liquid in the glass' Haha, Si can't even bring himself to call it beer. Love it 🤣🤣🤣
I first had Doom Bar on draught over 30 years ago at the lovely old Quayside Inn in Falmouth and thought it was superb. Its decline over those passing years is sad but just so very typical of so many once great UK beers. I don't drink anything by Brewdog on principle so I'm glad it's bloody awful.
Simon hates brewdog and seems to dismiss it before its in the glass. Not sure why he bothers as like many i already know the outcome of the video.
You should maybe do a live blind test to see if you get the same results
Really surprised the Shore Leave went down so badly. I had this on tap in Brewdog Dublin a few weeks ago and thought it was a superb pint; to the extent I even tried to search out an all grain clone (which they up until recently were happy to provide) and could have quite happily had several more if I wasn't flying later that day.
I am in no way a Brewdog fanboy but I guess the water source (even profiled) or a bottle makes all the difference.
Simon hates Brewdog and seems to go out of his way to turn his nose before he has even tried it. I have challenged him to do a blind test.
@@EdwardF83 I doubt he's a qualified taster. It's easy doing them if you have a partner, harder on your own. You need stickers. You have to wear sunglasses so you can't see the colour of the beers. Identical glasses. You need to close your eyes to do a shuffle and then start tasting. A lot more effort than pleading innocence, opening a bottle, pouring into a random glass and spouting catchphrases. Would it buy more hits / subscribers?
@@EdwardF83 No, they just do shit beers - I’m no Simon fanboy btw, but he’s right when it comes to Brewdog.
" it's quiet interesting to look at" what a quote its Beer 😂
My eyes are drawn to that wallpaper now 😂
Shore Leave is far from awful. I’ve bought a few times (cans) when I’ve seen it on offer. Surprised it repulsed you that much. I really didn’t get any of the tinny metallic notes you were picking up. Funky batch you bought maybe?
OK, so I’ve come back to my comment as I bought 4 cans over the weekend and they were rank. I’m convinced they’ve changed the recipe as I don’t recall it tasting like this when they first hit the shelves. But these were deeply unpleasant. So I’m kinda agreeing with Simon on this now. Vile, to be honest.
Think I`ll give the Brewdog a miss! Hate any metallic taste, never enjoyed Doombar so will stick with something like Fuller`s Pride which is decent. What I do like though is the `Famous Grouse` vibe you have going on the back wall.....well done!!
Simon you keep using Doombar as a reference point. I'm sure you've made several videos featuring it in the past few months. Almost nobody likes it, just forget about it? A better beer to use as a comparison might be something like London Pride. Anyway cheers for the review, came here after spotting the brewdog in Sainsbury's
Boom Dar is an absolutely dreadful ale,how on earth is it so popular 🤦♂️
The boggy water in uk is so tainted at this point that it is near impossible to make a decent beer out of it....u can recycle shïte water for a few thousand times but not anymore...oh and chloramine also doesnt help...what i sense is that there's something really really wrong w uk water...hope im wrong...
Thought I’d try the shore leave thinking they can’t muck a simple ale up, it’s got no stupid juicy flavours in it and it was on nectar offer for £4 instead of £6. When I got to the tills I’d been charged £6 and when I got home I tasted it... I’ll leave it there.. Wasn’t happy.
This is the beer that has led a small Scottish brewery called Jump ship to enter into a legal battle with Brewdog as they have range of beers called Shore Leave.
Brewdogs marketing slogan is 'Shore leave, its time to jumpship'
Can we get an update on the bunker bar?
Yes show us what you've been up to
Sick of the sight of Brewdog. They seem to take up so much shelf space in all of the major supermarkets. Hazy Jane is ok, don't mind their Guinness copy either. I'm not an American pale ale/hops fan which doesn't help.
Hi Simon. I’m glad it’s not just me. Thought I would try the brew dog a few weeks ago. Couldn’t quite put my finger on why it was so bad. Totally nothing about it was nice. Thanks for taking the time to do your videos 👍🏼🍺
That makes total sense- I know what shore leave is, but I didn't know what a doom bar was. I appreciate the explanation behind the beer names.
I had Shore Leave out of a can when it first hit the shelves and thought it was OK, it was £4 for 4 cans which helped, but it wasn't tinny in taste, wonder if it simply tastes different in a bottle
I really like the Shore Leave to be honest..... it has a nice old fashioned beer taste that you don't get anymore. Nice full bodied with a nice yeasty finish which you don't get anymore in beers... It's an excellent well produced easy drinking beer... probably wouldn't need more than two or three because it would soon get a bit dull.
Shore leave on bottle here, its a different direction for brewdog for sure...i have to admit i liked it...its supposed to be an simple sessionable beer thats somewere between pilsner and ale...id call it a light ale
I've given you a bit of a hard time about your Brewdog reviews but I tried Shore Leave the other day and was astonished by it, and not in a good way. It is a bit like McDonalds, everything from the Big Mac to the Apple Pie somehow tastes the same which is pretty amazing when you think about it and this 'Amber Ale' has the absolute same undertones as Punk or Elvis Juice, that distinct Brewdog 'twang'. Odd beer. I finished it but will not be picking it up again.
Just got a shore leave but watching your review now after I bought it . Just had to put some lemonade in it
The sulphur smell you are describing from Burton ales is known as The Burton Snatch
Had you made your mind up about the Brewdog before you'd even tried it?
I must say at this time of year 🤔. It's got to be a Great Stout or a Great Porter. Anything over 5% abv. Hope you have a Fantastic Christmas 🎁🎄🤶☃️❄️
Agreed mate...Titanic plum porter is a lovely drop...
Sorry but found the background somewhat distracting. I know others liked it but it's quite striking imho. Not sure if you've reviewed London Pride yet but I do find that quite pleasant. Regards.
Great stream last night with ratemybeer just watched the replay. Was a great watch, Loving the new wall paper but cant help but think a crow would have been perfect! While not great I much preferred the brewdog over a doombar especially a bottled Doombar which I find terrible cheers si BOSH
Got a bottle of the Shore leave last week but not tried it yet. Should definitely considered crows for your background wallpaper Si, unless you're thinking of becoming a Famous Grouse reviewing channel sometime soon! 😀
A very timely video, as I just relieved my Dad of some Doom Bar when visiting at the weekend. Out of all the beers I got recently, will probably leave it till last!
A good brewery should be filtering their water, especially if it doesn't lend itself to good beer. So i'm not sure to what extent the water can be blamed in the UK. There are plenty of other factors if mismanaged that can ruin a beer.
I didn't get any of the tin when I had it. Wasn't mind blowing stuff but it was OK, I'd rather drink something locally from Oakham though for the same price.
Only have doom bar to make beer batter 👍
Love the background wallpaper. Temporary? It really adds to the video
I like the brewdog over the doom bar
Simon what's the best way to get some beer to you to give you a chance to review it? I bought some alhambra reserva which is a cracking lager and thought you'd might like to try a bottle. I work a couple of days a week in Barry, so the right neck of the woods.
Love the new decor Simon, nearly grabbed my gun when I saw it!
Brewdog's (allegedly) Amber Ale, specifically designed (to the American style) for people who don't like Amber Bitter. I suspect this will appeal to people who think beer should be served cold, which is supported by its grapefruit flavours. Not for me, but if you're a lager drinker looking for an ice cold amber(ish) beer, this could be right for you.
The Doombar looked like a cold cup of black tea
Liking the wallpaper.
Just noticed the new wallpaper, me thinks it should have been crows 😉
The shore leave immediately reminded me of Shipyard Pale ale. I thought it was their version of it 🤙🏼🍻
On further tasting, I get the Doom Bar-ness👌🏼
Great wall paper mate...love it
Thanks for that. Neither will be on my shopping list this Christmas.
Oh shocking Simon dumping on another Brewdog beer.
I can no longer drink Doombar it gives me a headache after half a pint or so. I used to quaff it but something has changed in the ingredients
I literally have stopped buying brewdog beers of any description. Just gone down hill and there’s far more better beers out there . Great comparison. Cheers 🍻 Speno
And here was me thinking you’d like it! 😂
Is that famous grouse whisky wallpaper
Having had both they're not too bad. I'm more of a lager man but they're definitely drinkable
Hello!! Someone’s had the pasting table out. Looks cracking Simon
If they had any sense Brewdog would change their water profile as all their beers taste similar and certainly not in a good way..............I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole :(
Got a 4 pack of the shore leave for a DnD game... Was looking forward to it😅 not anymore... Also love the wallpaper suits the room 👌
Bit harsh on the Brewdog beer. Its definitely a bit of a cynical market grab, bit like Black Heart and Lost. Slightly better versions of the competition that are boring enough to entice macro drinkers, but its not terrible. More like 6/10 really for me.
Doombar is pleasant enough just bland but good on tap though. As for this Brewdog I couldn't comment having not tried it. I can imagine this being a bit like their attempt to take on Guinness with Black heart. I tried it once and went straight back to Guinness it had more flavour just wasn't very good in my opinion. I feel they kinda missed the point a little. No one buys Guinness because its a great stout and yet it has that easy drinking uniqueness many people enjoy.
So where exactly does the tininess and metallic taste come from as they are in glass bottles ? 🤔
Nothing to do with cans, they dont affect it at all (at least not these days) Its down to bad yeast
Tried the Shore Leave last month, my mistake was not to leave it on the shelf, terrible watery beer.
Liking the new bar Simon! 👌🏼
Believe Brewdog are being sued for shore leave at the moment too by another brewery
Just trying a shore leave now, rank, being honest, just rank, even with a top, Doom Bar, just buy that seriously !
Doom Bar Amber ale bottled is awful IMHO, tasteless, in fact the locals complained and Sharps brought out a stronger bottled version which sells near the brewery.
Like the wallpaper.
Hobsons Brewery Glass ❤ Great brewery from Shrewsbury
I wouldn’t choose to drink either, but if pressed it would be the Doombar. I don’t touch any of the Brewdog beers, I just don’t like the company.
Completely disagree about the brewdog , I have drank it out of a bottle and can , I get no metallic taste at all
Should of reviewed the company Brew Dog ripped off for this. Jump ship I'd it? Would have been interesting from a marketing point of view
Doom Bar: a formerly decent drop that is now the unequivocal Carling of the ale world 🤦🏾♀️
Doombar, as we now know it, is utter pish water. Like a slightly posher version of JohnSmiths bitter.
Doombar has been completely ruined over the last 20 years, I used to like it but now put it in the same category as John Smith's! I haven't tried the Brewdog one, but sadly another company that has massively lowered it's standards over the last five years....
I like the new look bar!
Wouldn't have either, pish 😂
Yeah, I don't understand that "Brewdog" flavour. It really bothers me. It's like there is something contaminating all of their beers. Quite repulsive.
I find this as well with Brewdog something off in the flavour.
Doom bar, another once decent beer ruined.
You've already reviewed these giving them low marks, so why waste time doing a comparison of these two shit beers ?
Loving the new look bar.... as for the beers both are rubbish imo. Both too mainstream. This is when your local beer makers are a million times better. Get some Moorhouses blonde or white witch if they have it in your local Morrisons... tons better and far more worthy of a review.
BrewDog 2/10 up to their usual high standards 😂
Ian
Scraping the bottom of the barrel now with some of these "battles". Clickbait in the hope people will watch 10+ mins for monetisation.
Only drank brewdog once in their pub in Bristol 2017..too gassy, too overpriced...not for me👊👊
Unfortunately more trash from Brewdog. I just generally avoid their beers these days as alot of the time they are poo. Plus I dont like how James has treated his staff and don’t support that. I guess they can still make a great beer but they just don’t really seem to now. Funny how they have become everything they hated about the big breweries when they first started.
Brewwdog's beers are generally rubbish imo. Their lager is awful
Both beers are awful to be honest i did drink doombar about 15 years ago but it went down hill when it started being brewed out of county and as for brewdog well what a sad state of affairs ha ha and i agree with the water and brewing thingy your talking aboit it does matter
Why do you even bother?
When breweries go BIG and sacrifice quality for quantity, just give up on them.
Why not spend your time and money on the small independents who are still trying?
If you keep drinking stuff that we all know is going to be rubbish, your channel will go the same way.
I'm sorry Simon, but the food you taste seems to be "Lowest common denominator" and now it seems the beers you taste are going the same way.
I used to subscribe to your channel, then I stopped because of this type of content.
I dip in, now and then, but it seems you are dredging the bottom of the barrel these days rather than looking for the cream.
There is no brew dog beer I like, trying this now and its awful
I don't trust this review. It comes across biased. Clear glass bottle and skunking not even mentioned on the Doom Bar and Simon loves to wax lyrical about the virtues of brown glass. These videos are for entertainment purposes only. A real beer reviewer would have done this blind, not with a blindfold but without knowing which was which. It takes more technical effort and a lot of balls but at least it's fair.
Ales don't tend to skunk in clear bottles. Why do a blindfold test? There are plenty of copycats here on CZcams. I'm sure you can find someone clueless doing a blindfold test. Simon is by far the most accurate beer reviewer on CZcams. Also, he is the original who started it all.
@@UKJetFan"tend"? I agree, I forgot it was Doombar, no chance of skunking whatsoever. Why would anyone do a blindfold test. That would be stupid. The eyes play a part too, regardless of what Simon thinks.
@@UKJetFanto be honest, you could put a peg on your nose, blindfold the lot, there’s a distinct difference between the two, and for me, to throw 8 cans of a pack of 10, says enough, oh, and the 2 I had, took me 2 1/2 hours to drink, and I like a drop. Doom Bar is way up in the league of these, an amber ale is supposed to be like a red sunset in colour, that isn’t, an amber ale is generally smooth, not like battery acid, and lastly amber ale in general isn’t over hopped, this is like a kids brewed it for a first all grain test brew … and then hates it.
Dr ew! Bog?
