  • See how my small soap business operates from curing to shipping! There are so many specific little details to think about. This video will give you a great start to think about how you can start your own soap making small biz. Photography, listing, labels, printing, storage box and location, dehumidifiers, and more. I didn't share anything on SEO's, tags, or reels so message me if you have more questions on that! That area is still a work in progress for me... The algorithm will eventually find me more once I've improved! In the meantime, NEVER GIVE UP! Wrestling with your own negative thoughts and doubts is as hard as the job itself!
    Update: On overcast days when there's great lighting, I also love taking product photos in my wood pile. See some of my shop photos for ideas 👇

      🤣 I feel your pain! Yes, hold up both ends and the slightly thinner side needs to be the top of the page, however your printer feeds through.. And I break the "rules" and put the sheets through the regular copy paper tray instead of hand feeding through the manual slot. Hope that helps!!

    To remove the soda ash on the tops of the soaps, just take a steamer (or steam from an iron) and wave it over the tops of the soaps and poof soda ash gone! plus it gives a nice glossy finish to the tops.

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před 6 měsíci

      I have one and I've done that some, but it must not be a good steamer because it sometimes splatters water and makes a mess!

    • @brendarowe984
      @brendarowe984 Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@wildbackyardsoaps yes mine does that too and then I figured out it's because the head of the steamer can't be held down low, it has to be held about chest height. that was a game changer lol. I loved how you showed your labeling process! by far that's been the most daunting part of my business.

    Hi, thank you for sharing. Do you put any moisture beads/silica gel beads in the cardboard box(shoe box)? how do you control the humidity in order to storage soaps? thank you!

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před rokem +2

      I have a bucket of gel moisture absorber material (called DampRid) in the room, but haven't put anything in the actual boxes themselves. Not a bad idea, though! Thanks! They dry out quite a bit with the dehumidifier on my soap curing shelf so stay decently dry once they are cured and in the boxes.

    when you print out your labels what do you use for those? what kind of a cutter for the soap do you use?
    thank you so much for your insider tips!!

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před 8 měsíci

      I use 2 in brown kraft paper labels from onlinelabels.com
      I just use a standard string cutter. If you search on Amazon, that's where I had to find mine since there aren't any locally here. Or if you're really handy, you might be able to make your own!

    Question - for the belly bands, have you found the oils in the soap leak through to the belly band? I'm researching packaging options right now!

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před rokem +2

      I thought for sure the belly bands would show grease spots but they don't. But couple other thoughts on belly bands - the soap will continue to shrink as it cures so it could slip off. Another idea that I really like is a half box - slide the bottom half of the soap into a box, that way it can be removed to admire and smell but still provides support. Just an idea ;) But I'm still pretty happy with the belly bands. If they slip off, I've been able to remove the sticker and tighten it up and reapply the sticker.

    So, I’ve been wondering about addresses…Do you have to use your home address or can it be A UPS store address…?

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před rokem +1

      For soap, a website or email is sufficient as long as you don't make medical claims on it. Otherwise it would be considered a cosmetic. For cosmetics they just changed the regulations and for small businesses you don't have to put your home address anymore as long as you have an email or way for them to contact you and have an address somewhere on your website. Don't just take my word for it, though ;) Definitely do your research and make sure I'm not missing something! I just put my Etsy shop link on my soaps and I put my email and website on my bath bombs and lip balms.

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před rokem +1

      Cannot use a UPS address as far as I know. The idea is they want to know where products are actually made so an inspection could be done if needed. I used to put my home address on my cosmetic products (lip balms and bath bombs) up until they changed the regulations for small businesses.

      @@wildbackyardsoaps What is the best way to start a soap business: by selling on Etsy?

    • @wildbackyardsoaps
      @wildbackyardsoaps  Před 10 měsíci

      @rawsunnata829 That is a loaded and complicated question! You basically need to feel very confident in your soap making and have a variety (but not too many) of solid options that you offer. I would start with Etsy (it's competitive and can be very slow) but also craft shows and wholesale. As you grow, you can spend money on your own website and use social media to promote yourself. Having a solid brand logo and mission would help some local shops want to do wholesale with you. It could take a while before you make enough income for it to be a full time gig. Just do it on the side and advertise hard until you feel like you've broken even and start growing.
