  • Disc brake pads need replacing every so often and sometimes they might wear up mid-ride. Here's how to replace them on the trailside.

    Brake pads should be something that you take with you in your pack - especially on longer rides. Sometimes, even if you've checked your bike, the conditions out on the trail might mean that you'll need to replace them after a couple of hours to avoid damaging your rotors. Brake rotors can get damaged if you don't replace your brake pads early enough.
    Have you ever had to switch your brake pads on the trailside? Let us know down in the comments.

    It sounds silly but mine actually did wear out mid ride on a downhill section and suddenly there was metal on metal and the bike started to shudder like crazy. I didn't have an extra set so I flipped them around as there was some uneven wear and it got me down the hill a little more comfortably.

    I really need to do this, I'm pretty close to braking with metal pads at this point

      I'm not going to be a over zealous cyclist, but the noise will be enough to tell you they should be changed. And no it's not going to ruin your rotors. But braking will be impaired.

    This is really useful for me, I just fitted new pads and they were really grabbing at the disc so I pushed the pistons back even further and they're still catching slightly. Looks like I need to undo the bleed valve!

    your comment at 1.40 is something not mentioned anywhere else and can lead to a heap of frustration if you do not know this. I refer to the fact that if your caliper pistons will not push back into the caliper then you need to allow some fluid to escape. I tried fitting new brake pads on my Avid Juicy 3 brakes...........impossible because the pistons which have central locating points sticking out even further than the face of the piston, just would not go back far enough. As soon as I realised that unlike a car the hydraulic system on a bike is fully sealed I sussed that I would have to allow some fluid/pressure to escape. I think you could make a video just on that point because it seems to me loads of people trip up by not knowing/realising that. Well done!

    I change em when pad materials get below 1mm or wear is uneven. My Hayes Pads are 4mm when new (2mm for pad, 2mm for backing material). I change em when any part of pad plus backing drops below 3mm. Calipers really come in handy for measuring this. Also, if pad wear is uneven you might want to realign your calipers.

    I have a Schwinn mountain bike, (the Walmart special). I recently had to replace tires so I removed the wheels, took them to a bike shop for new rubber and brought them home to reinstall. Ever since I have no tension on my rear brake handle. Not sure what I did to cause this. Can you help me troubleshoot what I may have done wrong? Thank you.

    I just replaced my rear pads as there was a lot of travel in the brake handle before it bit (shimano). It seemed to do the trick at first, but it quickly went back and now isn't really biting properly at all - any advice? It seemed to start when I had the rear wheel off and put it back on again.

      Once they squeak like that they need replacing, make sure the pistons are sealed and clean from oil.
      Not worth farting around cleaning the pads with de-greaser.

    • @Velo1010
      @Velo1010 Před 8 lety

      Yes. Don't try to clean the oil off the pads because it's been soaked into the pad material. Pads are inexpensive. Be sure you clean your rotors with automotive brake cleaner, alcohol, or acetone.

      Tun218 If you mean what size, there's different sizes depending on the style you ride. DH and freeride tend to have larger disks to disperse heat since they use a lot of breaking.

    One way I usually do it is if they don't come out straight away from the top, just let gravity take hold and give them a shove, they should fall out.

      And what is the price of a decent disc?

    • @SmevMev
      @SmevMev Před 9 lety +1

      crack kid Disc rotors start at around £10 but for most they're around £15 to £25. You probably don't need to spend more than that. Shimano Ice-Tech rotors will handle heat build-up better on long descents to keep you're brakes working well but like other higher-end rotors can start to get pretty expensive, around £30 and up. Any of SRAM or Shimano rotor should be a decent performer though.

  • @RMCAirsoftSA80
    @RMCAirsoftSA80 Před 9 lety +2

    No one ever seems to show how to do it if you have an entry level mechanical brake set. I have Tektro Novela on both of my mountain bikes with no idea how to change the pads.

    • @SmevMev
      @SmevMev Před 9 lety +2

      SilverArrowShooting I used to have a set of Tektro IO brakes and they're very similar to the Novelas. Take the wheel out so the disc itself isn't in the way, then you should be able to use the little tab on the pad to pull it towards the centre of the caliper. They're only held on magnetically and once they're off, you should be able to just drop them out the bottom of the caliper. Fit new pads by doing the above, but in reverse.

    • @RMCAirsoftSA80
      @RMCAirsoftSA80 Před 9 lety +1
