  • I've had the RETRAX PRO XR Tonneau Cover for almost a year now and while it is excellent for securing stuff in the bed and I love the ability to attach a rack and my bikes to it, it has some drawbacks. This is my review.

    Thanks for that review! When I installed mine, I was thinking for the price point, that it would be somewhat waterproof only to find out that I have the same issues you have. I thought it was just my bad installation. Glad to hear I am not the only one with this issue. Great idea with the bag! Thanks!

      Thanks! I hit a lot of dirt roads this summer and I also noticed a lot of dust coming in and the bag protects everything from that as well. I'm going to try and make some adjustments and add some weatherstrip to help, but I haven't figured out a way that will last and be durable, yet.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I’ve had all the top bed covers and non of them are waterproof but out if all of them the Retrax is the best for security and longevity. You see, Retrax is the only one that uses stainless steel ball bearing versus others like RollNLock that only slides in a rail which always gave me issues constantly having to realign my RollNLock. I’ve had the BakFlip which sucked caused it completely blocked my view when I had large items in the bed and utilized plastic locking mechanisms that eventually wore out due to vibrations from everyday driving and 4x4 use. Retrax is the best but remember folks, there’s no such thing as a fully waterproof bed cover unless you go with a fiberglass cap system which will limit bed use but never had a leak inside when it rained. Still prefer the Retrax 👍🏻

    • @RoadandReel
      @RoadandReel  Před 11 měsíci

      Glad to hear and I never even thought about how the BakFlip would affect your view. I also agree with you on the rollers. They work so well, even in sandy and dirty conditions. I think this bed cover will probably outlast my truck.

    Just ordered one, no regrets. I had a Diamond Back HD, it also was not 💯 water proof. Back then I paid $1800, now they are well over $2k. Great cover until you need to use a gooseneck trailer. Then you have to take the whole thing apart. To me, after years of research, the retrax seems to be the best all around capability. Diamond back will carry a lot on top, but again if you are pulling fifth wheel/gooseneck you have to take pretty much whole cover off. Also diamond back only allows half of bed space when wanting to haul anything in bed that’s large ie. New fridge or washer or anything else. You would have to either take cover off again, or put on top of cover which unless you have forklift/tractor good luck getting on and off. Also have fun strapping that load on top of the cover and feel comfortable enough it won’t fly off. Rant done, thanks for review. Great cover, they all aren’t 💯 waterproof. 😁

      I almost went with the Diamond Back cover, but I haul a lot of stuff and I didn't want to have to remove it every weekend when I was out grabbing a load of dirt or something. I still really like my Retrax and I also think it's the best out there. That's why I put it on my truck. I just put a trifold soft cover on my dad's truck (video out this week 😁) and that's perfect for him. He's older and just doesn't want his stuff to blow out or people snooping in the back of his truck. It's light and easy to use but it can be cut with a knife and you are limited to only bed space and nothing above it. I appreciate your comment, thanks!

    I've owned 3 retrax covers they usually get 3 years then the leaks start. Retrax will send out new lid with video proof of leaking. I think in your case you have to make sure the two side rails are tilted outwards towards the wheels. So basically you lift up where the bed cover is as much as possible and tighten your clamps. They will tell you that it's supposed to get out to that channel and then drain to the canister.

    I'm looking into getting this and had no reason to think it should be water/weatherproof until you brought it up. Just looking at their website, there is no mention of it for the retraxpro xr. Maybe they updated the website in the past year. Now I'm going to wait to see what they say to you.

    • @RoadandReel
      @RoadandReel  Před rokem

      That's interesting. When I was first looking, this one was advertised as waterproof. I see some websites still doing so, but Retract itself has it listed as mostly weather resistant. I'm thinking some websites could have added that in on their own. Retrax directed me to their seal kit and said I may be able to move it toward the tailgate for a tighter seal. I didn't purchase it to be waterproof and I mainly wanted it for security, so I'm still really happy with that aspect of it. It still fits all my needs.

    Mine leaks. Guess that's just the way it is. I have the one with the motor and remote. It's nice to have the security but the leaks are a pain. The bag sounds handy so I'll order one. Previous experience with a tilt-up Undercover lid was good as far as leaks went. It basically wrapped the entire bed and rails with the concave shape at the perimeter. never had a drop of water in the bed but it was a pain getting inside to retrieve tools near the cab.

    • @RoadandReel

Retrax was my second choice, I like the clean look of it and mounting options on each sides that makes it great for rooftop tent and bed rack system, most importantly you can still open the full cover with bed rack mounted. The reason why I got the diamondback was because I watched some of the videos about retrax, some guys experiencing leaks and snow being too heavy and damaging the cover . So I went with diamondback but it sucks that I’m not able to open it and access the bed with roof rack attached to it. I guess nothings perfect. 😂 thanks for the honest review.

    I bought my Retrax with the same expectation to replace a very cheap tri fold that the dealership threw in if I "closed the deal today." The "cheap" trifold kept the bed as dry as a bone. So I expected my high speed super cool looking Retrax to do the same. Nope. Always wet and 3 years in, it moves an inch or two when breaking. I love the ability to add a carrier or other attachments and you don't have to leave the feet on like I do. If you don't use them too often, you can take them off every time, but it'll add about 20-30 minutes to you assembly should you want to attach a rack. I believe you can add a rubber piece that will slide inside the track, but that may be another brand.

      The xr rails are the only reason I haven't chucked the whole thing. I built a custom rack w/ extruded aluminum and attached w/ Leer mounting feet from Prinsu. Yeah, I use the bed of my truck and I made this video during mulching season so I had been hauling a lot of dirt and mulch back there. I found my workaround with a waterproof bag that also keeps my things clean. Simple and no more soaked boots or packs.

    For what you pay for these systems, they should be water tight, if not water proof ( there’s a difference), that amount of water inside the vehicle is not acceptable to me, the flip top systems, “ seem” to be better, but nothing beats a over the bed rails lip system ( A.R.E) makes one, but no racks will work

      @@RoadandReel can you tell if it is leaking from the cover-rail or from the rail-bed? Also, from what I read, the clamps and plastic set-screws adjust how the track sits and a 2 degree (looks-good-on-paper but how the hell do you do this in reality?) angle will keep water inside the rails and flow to the drain tubes. Wondering how well this has been adjusted and accounted for?

    No tonneau cover is 100% waterproof. Any research on the subject will tell you that. I also installed a Retrax pro on my 2022 Silverado but I also installed the tailgate gasket at the same time. I do get some slight water inside, which I believe is from the lip on the tailgate forcing water into the seal from the cover to the tailgate.
