    I did the "hard" checks first. Checked ABS codes, checked tire pressure (reset switch), monitored Wheel speeds. Didn't think to check fluid. Added fluid, light went off. Thanks for reminding me to look for the simple things first!

    Good suggestions about getting the codes checked and such, however, as a rule of thumb, it may not be a good decision to put brake fluid in a brake reservoir if the brake fluid level is low for several reasons:
    1. The brake reservoir is a good indicator of brake pad condition. If your brakes are low, it could be that your pads are low. As the Caliper piston pushes the brake pad against rotors that causes the vehicle to stop moves further out due to wear of the brake pads, brake fluid takes up the lost space, therefore, when the pads are replaced and the piston is pushed back into its original position, the brake fluid level goes back to its original full level. In addition, when the brakes are repaired, the fluid will overflow once the caliper piston is pushed back to its original position. The light might be on due to pads being too low. Some vehicles have brake pad level sensors that warn if the brake pads are too low.
    2. There might be a leak in the brake lines that will require repair. Low brake pressure can make the light come on. In this case, if you are away from home and see a puddle, it might be a good idea to put fluid in to get you safely home or to a repair shop. Not a good idea to prolong as the issue can get progressively worse and the brakes can fail. Nevertheless, if there is no leak, I don't suggest putting brake fluid in the reservoir as brake fluid do not evaporate because it is a sealed unit that is not water based.

      If your brake fluid level is at minimum, you probably have a fluid leak, somewhere. There can be no other reason for the reservoir to have lost fluid. Leaks can occur anywhere in the system, but mostly at the wheel cylinders.

    It kind of worked on my silverado 2003. My truck had intermittent emergency tones, it turned on and off and gave me a big headache. I looked under the hood reconnected a lose wire connector near the brake booster just like you told me to. (even though it wasn't the exact wire to the reservoir like you demonstrated) Now the tone went away (thank god) but the red light is still on and concerning. I hope I goes away soon by it self maybe it takes a few miles to turn off. Maybe I'll disconnect the negative battery terminal to rest it see if that works.

    I have a 2005 escalade ext.
    Brake light came on bc a line ruptured and I lost fluid.
    My dash says service brake system and stability sys disabled.
    I replaced all the brake lines, bled the lines, and topped off my master cylinder reservoir. Everything seems to be good now but my brake light on my dash is still on. My abs light is not on. Only my brake light and my TC light.
    Do I have to get these lights turned off or will they eventually reset themselves since I have fixed the problem? It's been 2 days now and brake light and TC light are still illuminated

  • @alm7707
    @alm7707 Před 5 lety +5

    While you had that level sensor unplugged you should start the truck. if the light is out the level switch is stuck or bad. Check that the e-brake pedal or lever is fully released. watch the light and pull up on pedal or push lever down. watch the light see if it goes out. Light comes on if there is an unbalance between front and rear brakes. maybe leaky wheel cylinder or rusted brake line. might be the Master cylinder leaking inside or to the outside look for brake fluid where the master cylinder bolts on.

    • @BLAKHARTFILM
      @BLAKHARTFILM Před 4 lety

      Any idea how to release the level switch? I think I have a problem with mine, as I had bled the brakes and inadvertently ran the reservoir dry.

    • @alm7707
      @alm7707 Před 4 lety

      @@BLAKHARTFILM If you ran it dry just start over bleeding. Level switch should reset itself when you fill the reservoir. If not and the light goes out with the sensor unplugged then just leave it unplugged and check the reservoir level more often like we did before there was a level sensor. I've found the most common reason the light is on is because the proportioning valve has sensed an unbalance between the front and rear brake pressure (leak somewhere?) It's below or beside the reservoir and has a wire to turn on the light too. Then of course, things can get more complicated with ABS brakes.

    I have one, I have a 1992 Suburban 1500 with the 350 TBI V8. Every once in a great while the brake light comes on, it's done it 3-4 times since I got it about 7 months ago. Usually going over a bump. Now, when I shut it off and go to start it back up, it cranks harder, like its getting spark but not gas but it will eventually start. The only time it does this, is after the brake light comes on. Could that be a possible short and where might that culprit be? Again the only time it will crank hard is after that light comes on, every other time, starts up perfectly with no issues.

    My brake light comes on and I have checked my brake fluids, replaced my rear brakes and brake switch. What else could it be? Any other ideas?

      Did you bleed the brakes at all four wheels? Also, check the ground connections for the controller. Check for vacuum leaks at and to the brake booster.

      Can be 3 reasons: 1)Low fluid level in brake reservoir; 2) electrical short )broken wires) or 3) a brake fluid line pressure differential. Check fluid level first then if not that, check each wheel to see if brake calipers, brake lines or brake cylinders are leaking. Look for tell-tale fluid loss i.e. drips or 'wet' areas. Can also mean master cylinder or ABS system is malfunctioning. Have shop apply DRB scanner to id the issue. Good luck!

      Mark Hanson I will have someone look into that. Do you know of any links for 2004 Mercury Sable? And thank you for responding.

      Could be PB switch- something you can check/examine Here's link. Check brake fluid reservoir 1st-low fluid from worn pads often triggers the lite. if all else fails on the EZ stuff, have a brake shop scan the system with the DRB to ID what's wrong. Bonne chance! www.taurusowners.com/topic/4477-e-brake-light/
