- Äas pĆidĂĄn 17. 12. 2017
- In this video I show how to install a 180 Degree thermostat in your Dodge RAM 1500 with a 5.7L Hemi Engine. It is pretty straightforward and will help to lower your engine temperatures and make a bit more power and not have a heatsoaked engine.

I did a coolant flush and replaced my stock thermostat with the 180Ⱐone vs. the stock one. Before I started, I didn't have any heat and my temp gauge sat just a little under halfway. After I finished the job, I now have good heat, but my temp gauge only sits at Œ of the way.
I was just wondering if anyone has come across this before and what might be the remedy to fix this? I would appreciate any insight. I love watching the Boosted Motorsports videos! Thanks!
So if I switch for an E fan would my truck run perfectly fine as is or is there some risk to not changing the thermostat or adding a tune?? I'm asking because I'm interested in installing an E fan in my 2010 hemi but when watching all your videos on installation and then possibly needing a tune + TSAT change I'm kinda becoming skiddish. I mean I use my truck as a day to day driver, vacation vehicle, and every once in a while heavy loads. So I would like all the information to make this decision or if it's not even worth doing. Thanx Boosted you helped me repair broken exhaust manifold bolts last year đȘ
Any issues with this since the original install?
On Amazon it recommends this other gasket fi you need that or it comes with everything you need
Have you hauled anything for long durations with you fan swap? Iâm moving from NM to Idaho with a fan swap like yours and I want to make sure my truck isnât going to overheat. Plz help
This old video still helping me out đđœ HOT DAMN
VERY GOOD VIDEO WHICH SIMPLIFIED THE INSTALLATION OF THE THERMOSTAT!!
Appreciate the video. Well demonstrated & explained. Liked the additional variable explanations.
Thx for posting this video. I'm about to do this for a friend and I see how easy it is
Great video man now I feel I can do it myself thank you
Thanks brother! Glad you enjoyed the video!
John - really like your videos - very straight forward and right on the money with the basic hand tools approach. Really enjoying all of these.
Thanks for the support brother! Plenty more content on the way! đ
Your awesome bro. Do more videos on rams. I have a 2012 and I just changed the radiator and water pump. Now Iâm gonna have to change the thermostat
Thanks I will be doing this mod soon.
Thanks for the info. The clutch fan went out on me so I just installed an electronic fan and did the 180 thermostat swap (from the stock 195 that's in the 4.7). It's a very noticeable and impressive difference they both made. I appreciate your advice. Wish I had done this sooner as I reside in Texas.
Thatâs awesome Mike! Thanks for the feedback and glad you found it helpful! It even makes the A/C colder I found on my truck đ€
Hello, before replacing the thermostat, your HEMI, what was the engine temperature?
Had temp going up to 240. Replaced everything out but it turned out to be a clogged radiator. Change it out, the coolant passages on these trucks are very thin. A radiator shop can do a flow test to confirm this.
That helped me for sure.
your are the best man
Like a champ. Man you cant get no better explaining this s&!t. Please keep the easy mods coming. I cant do that tuning stuff but appreciate the info.
Thanks Jeff I appreciate it!!
Iâm liked subscribed and notified đ
Thanks for the support! Plenty more on the way and new videos are posted every other day!
Do you have a video on how to purge the cooling system to get all the air out?
@BoostedMotorsports What exactly are you talking about that'll need tuned? How do i get the this tune? If I have a obd code scanner am I able to do the tune that your talking about with that?
Also I liked and subscribed in hopes that I'd better the odds of you replying to my questions
Keeping it simple is the way to go!...Mahalo's for the class bro.
Thanks man I appreciate it! đ€
Awesome videos you make. Lots of help. How you don't have more subscribers? I have no idea. Asset to CZcams.
Thanks for the support brother! I think it mostly has to do with the fact I was making lots of content for the Viper but it doesn't get much interest. Ever since posting videos on the RAM stuff people seem to be more interested. Please feel free to share any of my videos with others if you think they will help people or be interested as that is what I am all about!. More videos on the way though and I have committed to posting a new video every other day.
Tophertoy3 totally agree with you, great videos with a lot of details that really helps, also I like the music on them. Great job bro!
Good advice I have a Dodge ram 1500 I change my blower motor fan and and resistor but did not change the thermostat I don't warm inside like it should what you think
I've been looking everywhere to fins a guide on an 04' 3.7l v6. It looks like the upper hose mounts into the same mount as the alternator somehow and I'm thinking surely I don't have to take the alternator off to access the thermostat housing. But the only guides I see for RAM 1500's are for HEMIs
Powertrain Engineer here. @kevin maxey said in a comment below "The engine will run more efficient with the factory tstat. Cooler is not always best." He is absolutely correct. There is virtually no cost difference in a 180 to a 205 thermostat from an OEM standpoint. The engine was engineered to run at those temps for a reason. 200-215 F may be the efficient range for multiple parts inside the engine. Lowering the temperature may effect this and in turn reduce the life of your engine. I will admit there are multiple examples when the OEM doesn't get something right and after market engineering is the way to go. This is not one of those time.
From an emissions standpoint you are correct. From a performance standpoint cooler operating temps = less detonation and more ignition timing you can run.
I was told that the injectors will run better with the OEM stat. Any truth in that
@@BoostedMotorsports Hello, my Jeep XK 5.7 VVTI in the mountains reaches an engine temperature of 205-215 farenhait, With a trailer also 205-219 but already on the highway 203F is it normal?
I put a 180 thermostat in my 2016 Ram and no check engine lights. It runs at 185 solid until highway and the grill shutters close, then gets to 219 before they open up.
what are the cycles you set for the thermostat so that it does not throw the check engine light
What about your cap pressure after you change the thermostat? Does the cooling system pressurechange at all?
How does using a lower Temperature Thermostat on the 5.7 Hemi affect the Heater in the winter? Many Thanks
Hows the EFan going ? And do the temps go up at all like and changes after the mod
Hey man I was curious if you can help me out. I owned my 2009 dodge ram about 6 months and in that time I have had to change out mine twice, both added a 203°. After each change truck would run fine but then would throw a code saying bad thermostat, obviously it may be something more than just the thermostat, what would you think it could be?
Hello, I have a Durango 2012 5.7 HEMI and the temperature at which it works reaches up to 226 °F. When I turn on the air conditioning, sometimes the temperature drops but then it goes back up. What would you recommend me to do? Thanks!
I have a 2007 dodge 1500 hemi and I was getting 13-14 MPG until a changed the thermostat and radiator and now iâm getting 17-19 MPG with a cooler engine
Thats awesome brother glad to hear! đ
Wow, I thought the opposite. I lost 1 mpg in my Sonoma going from a 190 to a 180 and lost 1 mpg.
Hey do you have the part # for that stat? Thanks!
Gregory,Ivory&Miciah Jerman where you buy it
@@johnsineni youre correct. 190 to 200 will give you better gas milage than 180. No doubt.
This work for all hemis? I got an 03 would it be worth changing it. And will.it still havd decent heat in the winter?
Hello, what can cause on a 2009 dodge ram 1500 5.7 have heat on passenger side and blows coldish on driver side?
Thanks! Just changed mine out
Awesome!!! Glad to hear it went well!
I put a 180 in my 5.2. It does good but when I sit in traffic it still gets a little hot. Iâm in Phoenix AZ. I will put on dual fans for the radiator soon.
Aftermarket all aluminum rad?
Does the jiggle pit have to be at 12-10 or 2 o'clock position? Thanks
hey bud i have a 2019 new body style. I got the milodon 160 degree thermostat but it didn't come with a new gasket can i use the one off the old thermostat instead. I dont know what to do. I planed on doing this weekend but now in dont know what to do. Thanks nickel
Do I need to change my fan from clutch to electric before I put a 180 degree thermostat?
Will this help the truck from overheated while at idle?
A 25 degree drop is a lot, I think I would not go more that 15 tops. I think with the Ram I would go with a 195 if I were to go cooler.
What size hose did you use to drain the coolant?
Have a 2014 ram 1500 5.7 changed out fan clutch electric fan water pump thermostat and radiator but water is still not flowing what can I do
What size hose fits the drain?
heh what are those two aluminum rubber hose line on the passenger side used for. the ones going to the rad my lower one broke and i dont know whats its name to order it, sound lame.
i got a 190 thermostat and i have the v6 fan conversion will i still need a tune , ram1500 5.7 2013 no grill shutters
But for those who live further north it may be best to use the 203 so you don't freeze your butt all winter.
Hi I have a question My cars gauge goes really high and I believe its overheating .I place some Radiator Coolant to the Reservior .Then after that it drains my Fluids I put in the Reservior .I already replace the Thermostat in my Car . And still the temperature still going high and I run my OBD reader 2 and it finds a P0115 which is Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit . I bought a new Temperature Sensor but still its leaking fluids in the Reservior tje temperature gauge go higher . A good advice would be beneficial for me .
đ
hey i did the same thing like u did,and my truck still is overheating, dont u think i have to purge it??
Is it the same for the V6 Ram (2014)
Also to note the bleeder needs to be at the highest angle possible on when you place the new thermostat in itđ
Do u have it programmed to come on at 185?
Did you use sealant on the housing .
Will there be an issue with the shutters ?
A 180 stat us fine but especially in the south a 160 is even better. I have a jeep grand cherokee- with 5.7 so I will need a high perf radiator which I will be getting. Both the engine and the transmission- heat kills them both. If you can run 165 to 170 water temp your engine trans all rubber parts literally the whole truck last far longer.
Like this video
Do you even have to Dry the housing? Mine was all corroded.
Are there any high flow thermostats
How many turns to open the valve
Watch that upper hose. It is rubbing on your V6 e-fan shroud and will eventually fail at the contact point.
Did u removed the fan clutch ???
First off, love your videos brother! Question about the thermostat... that jiggle pin, does it matter if it's in the 12:00 position or the 6:00 position etc? I know installing the thermostat with the spring side towards the water but wondering if it matters if that's up or down. Thanks for the info.
Jiggle pin should be in the 12: 00 position.
Should be 12:00. But I also heard that it doesnât matter. Iâd just install it at 12:00 to be on the safe side
Can I do it with a 4.7L or it just works with 5.7L?
Hey guy I have a 2014 Ram 1500 Iâm about to do this mod with no tuner yet. I bought a 160 stat. Will the 160 stat work well with electric fan for meantime until I get tuner?
I did it to my 2011 Dodge Ram and when I turn the truck off it makes like a air release noise is that normal
What size tube u use
you think it work in a 2004 dodge ram 1500 4.7?
Theres alot of people confused about this, including this guy in the video. To all to whom drives mopar hemi engines, when putting a 180 stat it keeps the engine cooler longer than a stock 203 stat. Your fans will take longer to work> work less. Even in below temps you will not get any coolant codes. Know for summer you must not a must but comes in hand to get a diablo or predator tuner to set the fans a lil bit lower. You can set your fans to kick in around at 200 degrees. So it wont reach that stock 217/219 degree.some set there fans even lower like 195 185 but you will be putting them fans to work 24/7
And also your alternator will be busy since them fans will be running all the time. 200 degrees fans kick in and will lower 7 to 10 degrees and wont reach 219/217 degrees
Thanks
It looks like your coolant is the pink one for Asian vehicles? Can you tell me which one you use?
Have to replace the water pump on my ram. Might as well replace the thermostat as well.
Definitely a good time to get it done đ€
I didnât do it and now my truck is overheating all the time. It only overheats at idle but when I drive it stays around 208 degrees on a 100 degree day. At idle itâs reached 240 once. Would you know why?
@@6870catfish You should probably change the thermostat.
This only works if you have a programmer to set new operating temp. If you donât all it will do is trigger the computer to up the fuel to air ratio until you get to operating temp using a shit load more fuel.
What up man Why is your coolant red???
What is jiggle pin?
Can u reuse stock gasket if the 170 didn't come with one
Yeah as long as it isn't super old or dried out I don't see why not!
No check engine with 180 tstat?
With the fan mod,
What's the temp sit at when idling, when hot ?
I can sit at 185 no problem with the cooler thermostat and electric fan.
Does the fan need to get reprogrammed? Since it really only kicks on close to 200°
Fan comes on at about 220* with the stock computer unless AC is on. Its a good idea to get a tuner if you are deleting the mechanical fan but it won't overheat or anything if you just swap thermostats.
You can loosing that ratorator plug with a ( T55 Star Bit Socket ) on the 2013 Ram 1500.....
I came back 2 your channel because I remembered you did a video on tstat change. My 2017 5.7 Hemi runs 221 for a couple minutes but then drops to 199 I wondering if that is normal. Yes everything is stock.
If you still have the stock mechanical fan setup I would say wither your electronic shutters are stuck closed or your mechanical fan clutch is shot. The electric A/C fan comes on around 221 degrees but should rarely kick on in normal situations besides turning on the A/C
BoostedMotorsports I did some deeper investigating and the antifreeze was low in the overflow added 1/2 bottle of Mopar Antifreeze and 208 is now as high as it goes. Seems like I solved that problem. Actually I feel stupid. Lol
lol happens to the best of us! At least it was an easy fix đ€Ł
I have a 2013 Ram 1500 I changed from the 203 down to 180, my temp pretty much stays at 185 at idle and down highway, its only been 1 day do I need reprogram the fan or will the computer relearn it? Don't want to damage anything
Read what the guy below says as he's correct. Your PCM is looking for 203 and will do everything it can to get it to that temperature. You're going to run rich and in a 2013 with its copper tip plugs, they're going to foul out much sooner.
When you switched it did youâre temps fluctuate at all? I switched mine with the same tstat and now it jumps up and down from 185-225
Its most likely because your truck has the active grill shutters. They stay closed so that your truck runs hotter. If you want the engine to run cooler then you'll need to get a tune to reprogram the fan to come on sooner and delete the active grille shutters. Check out the other vid I have on this where I document this exact problem đ
I had to get a tune to make my 180 stat work plus I just put mods on the car
@@BoostedMotorsports does running the AC kick the active shutter to open?
Decided cold isnt better stock is 203 for reason so engine warms up faster burns lest fuel becasue higher temp engine run all fuel
I donât drain the rad whenever I change the thermostat. Iâm no expert auto mechanic, but I feel like if I donât drain the rad, it will be easier for me to bleed the system.
Hey bro you got a link to the T-stat? I'm trying to find one and it seems impossible
Yeah here it is. Been running this for months now and works great đ
www.amazon.com/Stant-48798-Thermostat-XACTstat/dp/B00LH7XMDW
Thank you bro!
Really appreciate it
replaced thermostat however my heater isn't working now!! Any ideas as to why it would stop working? Thermostat is working it keeps at around 200F . I probably have air in the system but how do I look for and fix that?
@Trista Fravel Thanks for the response still ! I ended up elevating the front end and running it. It eventually pushed the air bubble out.
Just ordered this part, also my 5.7 hemi has a radiator fan and a clutch fan is that normal? I bought it used . I thought they only came with a clutch fan
Thats normal. Stock the 5.7 comes with a mechanical and electric fan but I deleted the mechanical and upgraded the electric fan đ
Doing radiator and thermostat in a few mins. Video helped out alot.
Thanks
Did you have to tune the truck after removing the fan clutch and mechanical fan? Also, does the electric fan greatly quiet the truck when it's cold? Mine runs pretty loud and it's quite annoying.
What's size is the tubing to drain the coolant?
Going off memory you should be fine with about 3/16" or 1/4" ID tubing!
Would I have to remove and replace with stock in order to pass smog?
No you dont.
What kind of Antifreeze you using ??? It looked purple ?? What would be the best too use cause I live in Florida ....
Since you're in Florida and don't have to deal with freezing you can run more water. Its actually the pink Mopar fluid. They switched to purple sometime in 2014 but mine doesn't have the purple stuff
@@BoostedMotorsports copy that ... So your using Hybrid organac compund type ??
Thanks for getting back too me... I'm coming up on 150,000 miles on my 2014 Ram and I guess I half too do the flush if I were too change Antifreeze types.. I just want too do what's best for the motor
I got a 4.7 so the thermostat is at the bottom driver side đ€Šđ»ââïž
Any reason why fca would go with a 203f instead of something lower?
Thor Swenson exactly! Do your temps swing at all on the highway? The programming on my truck keeps closing the damn active grill shutters on the highway and bringing my temps back up
so you did not do any performance tune with the 180 stat? just a remove and replace and never see a code come up huh?
I have a DIablosport tune on my truck right now. I've heard it can throw a code on a stock tuned truck though in cold weather!
it is a good idea to get the oil to at least 200 to help remove moisture and fuel blow by which then would be sent through pcv back into engine or catch can ideally, not to mention operating temp oil is usually around 200 where it reaches its full viscosity/protection rating. That said, this shouldn't drop oil temps much if any.
Hey do you have a part # for that stat? All the parts stores keep telling me all they show is the 203 degree one.
Yes sir!
Part used: STANT 48798
BoostedMotorsports Thank you very much!
Just did the swap. Thanks for the vid. I replaced about two quarts of coolant that leaked out with auotozone universal coolant. It says that it can mix with any color coolant. I have a 2016 that had the factory OAT coolant. I didnât know about mixing coolant until I just read owners manual which says to only use OAT coolant. Think I should flush the system with fresh OAT coolant?
Yeah I would use their coolant cause mixing coolants can cause sludge buildup and other problems!
BoostedMotorsports I flushed the entire coolant system and refilled with Mopar OAT. I noticed that the coolant in the overflow reservoir was starting to turn to sludge. So much for Autozoneâs universal coolant being able to mix with any coolant. Again, thanks for the vid.
Hello, what is the correct engine temperature for HEMI 5.7? according to the indicator on the board?
203*
@@BoostedMotorsports
Thanks, I have hemi 5.7 I connect the ELM 327 and it shows me that the thermostat opening temperature is 100st and while driving in the city I have 96/97 on route 92-95. I have a dodge ram truck 5.7 hemisphere every time I stop at a stop sign it runs hot when going down the road it's runs normal could it be the thermostat
It could be but there are a lot of different factors that could make it overheat like low coolant, fan not working, headgasket, etc

Same here!
Hey I had a question my truck when idle coolant goes up to 239 is this normal I just changed the thermostat and still . Thanks in advance
Did you check how is the condition of your coolant and radiator? Check for rust maybe is partially clogged the radiator lines. And also check if is lossing coolant, if so could be the water pump gasket leeaking
Does the motor have to be warm or running temp to change thermostat
Nope do it cold!
You can actually just remove your shutter set up and leave the actual shutter motor mounted but removed the actual shutter assembly , I had to remove mine for my intercooler
Yeah I've heard of people still throwing codes unless they leave the shutters in the 4 corners and just remove the center ones. I've also heard people lose 1-2mpg removing the shutters which I don't know if it is worth the performance taking them out if that is true?
I just hit a deer and damaged my shutters to the point where I removed them. I am getting an error and I have lost about 1mpg. It may just be a weather difference causing it (very cold here now), it could be less...
My 17 ram 1500 temp when hot runs at 215 to 218 is that high??!
Its a bit high but not overheating. Check your overflow tank and make sure its topped up!
I heard there is a 192 or something thermostat. U here they run hot because there dirty engines so to burn cleaner they run hotter but I agree I dont like my temps
