How Good Was Robert Pires Genuinely?

  • The perception when Robert Pires joined Arsenal in 2000 was that the team was already complete. But the Frenchman provided that final touch of class that made them one of the Premier League’s greatest ever outfits.
    If Bergkamp was ‘The Iceman’ and Henry was a steely presence up front, Robert Pires was a silky finisher who brought a velvety finesse to Arsenal.

    He's one my favourites for sure, his great partnership with Cole and Henry and clinical finishing made him a joy to watch. Overall, he's one of the reasons why Arsenal played so beautifully during the early 2000s. Hope he finds success in coaching 😀

    "He seemed to be made of sterner stuff" Great line, true to R Pires. I remember his 2nd season and he was really trying to fight for the team and ball as well as play.

    He was special, dude looked so scrawny you'd be silly to think you can just take the ball from him until he drops some little bit of magic no one ever saw coming. The invincibles were scary, as defenders did not only have to worry about strikers but also keep an eye on Pires being a goal threat from the wing. One of my all time favourites.

    I remember Pires being so passionate against the Iraq war. I was truly heartbroken for the guy for missing the World Cup because of injury. I remember him seemingly so poetic and philosophical qbout it.
    20 years later, I loved the fact that they used the reference "Fancy dan" in this video.

      Tbf I barely considered him a winger. He was always so involved in the build up, creation, so smart with his passing... Was almost like a mix of Iniesta and some kind of winger... His goalscoring ability wasn't even the best thing about him, far from that.. He was so smart with his passing, always initiating moves.. I always thought of him more like a number 10, a playmaker, than a winger. The goals were just a extra element to his play. He was always just so active without the ball, always on the move, following up every move until the end, that's why he scored do many goals.
      There's really no player like him. Hard to compare him to anyone. I think Arshavin had many of those qualities, in terms of both goalscoring and playmaking but was never really used in the proper way in Arsenal.

    • @shazam1522
      @shazam1522 Před rokem

      @@siberianTiger639 perhaps rosicky if he didnt get injured. But pires was different. The fact that a winger could score so much created the idea for the false 9. Why have a predictable striker when the striker can be a midfielder or a winger

    • @siberianTiger639
      @siberianTiger639 Před rokem +1

      @@shazam1522 I think Henry had more influence on the idea of a false 9 than Pires. Although two of them interchanged positions on the pitch quite often, so Pires wasn't far from that too. That whole Invincibles formation was so fluid, with no real number 9, Pires and Ljungber would end up in goalscoring chances all the time, and both had great positioning and were basically able to play as 9's too. Henry and Bergkamp (or Wiltord) would drop deep or to the wing all the time. A very very fluid formation, hard to compare to any other team.

    Pires arrived to Arsenal as a genuine *WORLD CUP* winner. He has Juve and Madrid after him like white on rice, but he chose to come Arsenal due to Wenger. He is the greatest winger I have ever seen. Just ask Garry Nevvile, he will let you know about how lethal that left side was of Arsenal's.
