So I feel like the thing with Toni is that she realizes she’s not acting like herself because she was so enamored with Cheryl and that she’s lost a lot of her own character and her own autonomy. I think this was a really good moment for her as a character because I remember Vanessa saying that the biggest criticism she had was that she felt that the Toni character lost who she was during the high school years so I believe this is the show actively trying not to do that to show that Toni is her own individual character outside of Cheryl. I think Toni wants to slow down for her own self so she can do some self reflecting first.

A lot of people came for Toni after this episode, but it was the FIRST TIME in seven years we got her reaction and pov on ANYTHING choni-related. It’s normal to feel insecure when you’re in a relationship for the first time, and Cheryl being so different from her didn’t make things easier. It feels like the writers really listened to criticism to make this last season their best and I’m loving it.

I see people getting mad at Toni but y’all have to look at it this way Toni is black, bi, in a gang and dating a rich white girl. Every last one of those things were looked down upon in the 50s ntm she’s dating the Blossoms daughter. Cheryl was the first person she actually had a crush on. Prior to dating Cheryl she was a player so committing to a relationship you’re not even sure is gonna work out had to be scary for her. She thought she could be someone she isn’t. I just wish ppl would understand it from her POV more instead of just instantly getting upset at her. Plus this is the only time we’ve ever gotten to see how she felt in the relationship.

For how much I'm enjoying this season and the 50's stuff, I'm really frustrated that we're probably only gonna get 4 or 3 eps in present day cuz i saw a post on Instagram about episode 15 and they're still in the 50's

Really wish you had been more understanding of Toni and her expressing doubts and wanting to look out for herself instead of being so brutally harsh and calling her a bitch, etc. It took Cheryl 6 episodes to get to a place where she was comfortable being open and honest with herself, after working through her insecurities. Is Toni not allowed to have her own struggles and issues to work through? The whole point of the plot was that Toni was so focused on her feelings for Cheryl and on helping Cheryl come out, that she let her own interests like her activism fall away and instead found herself knee deep in Cheryl's world, a world of whiteness and privilege and preppiness, a world she didn't belong or feel comfortable in. That, on top of the fact that Toni is not used to being in actual relationships and was clearly scared of just how much she liked Cheryl when she felt it was doomed to fail due to their differences, makes her momentary doubts and freak out make complete sense. She deserves empathy and understanding, not judgment. I don't think they were a "mess" in this episode at all, but instead felt this plot was organic and well done, and provided some much needed perspective into Toni's feelings and struggles. It also got in front of a lot of a very long standing criticism of Choni due to the writers' racism always making their plots Cheryl centric and not exploring Toni's feelings.

I agree with everything you said! I know I didn’t explain it well in this episode, but I was more so upset over the scene where she ended things.. because I wasn’t aware that it was more about race and Cheryl’s privilege. i just saw it as her chasing Cheryl, doing all these things and then she got the girl and dipped. i thought the convo with Lizzo is what made her end things. afterward when she spoke about race, I definitely understood more. I apologize. I think I just reacted more poorly because of Toni doing all these things and then basically deciding to undo it all. i’m not saying that she didn’t have reason to do it though! because she def did. I do understand what you’re saying and where you are coming from. and you’re right. it’s important that Toni is explored as a character and not just Cheryl’s love interest. thank you for writing this! it’s sometimes hard to fully understand the gravity of certain scenes when i’m watching for the first time and also talking too much.. lol because i am truly watching it for the first time on camera, and sometimes things go over my head. I apologize for not following the real issue at hand and for not being more understanding in the video.

@@kynicole Lizzo was part of it, but the scene right after with Tabitha talking about her time with Emmett Till's family and then asking Toni about her writing, with Toni admitting she hadn't done much writing lately because of cheerleading was also obviously a huge part of setting up Toni's storyline for the episode, too. I'm glad you eased up by the end and seem to understand it better now, because your rant during that second locker room scene was legitimately uncomfortable to watch :/
