A film by Chad Unger, winner of the Rapha Film Fund, Unspoken Road is a portrait of Deaf and Queer brother and sister, Nora and Uriel Torres. The siblings, originally from Mexico, discuss how growing up in a small town in California they experienced discrimination and isolation, but as they came of age discovered the therapeutic and life-affirming value of cycling. Reflecting on riding bikes as a tool for progress on both a personal and community level, this poignant and sensitively constructed short film is an intimate insight, highlighting cycling’s ability to build a more inclusive and progressive society.
About the director:
Chad Unger is a Deaf Gay photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. His journey into film began as a snowboarder when he picked up a Sony VX1000 video camera. He soon found himself drawn into the storytelling behind the scenes, rather than capturing the snowboard tricks themselves. Chad’s ambition is to use the Rapha Film Fund as an opportunity to shed light on the experiences and perspectives within the Deaf and Queer communities and how cycling plays a transformative role in people’s lives.
