If it's not a gas leak then I'm totally confused as to what could have happened. It's like a bomb went off. 🤷 😮

Since gas has been ruled out, there's a chance that someone could have been cooking drugs and or even storing explosives for something.
There's plenty of other scenarios, like a mob hit, but those chances are much lower.

I am very familiar with the geology of southwestern PA. The gas company said none of their pressure regulators were showing excessive readings. This may be, and probably is true. However, utility gas lines are not the only source of natural gas in that area. Southwestern PA sits on top of world's largest natural gas deposit. I doubt this was caused by the current Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling boom. Those wells are highly regulated, mapped out, and are thousands of feet down. (1) All over southwestern PA there are old coal mines that will fill with natural gas. The entire area is mined out. This natural gas will fill the old mine, then find its way up through cracks and ancient fault lines to the surface. If you are an unlucky person who built a house over this, it very well may built up in your basement and house. Natural gas has no smell. The utility companies add agents to it so you can smell a gas leak, but actual natural gas is odorless. (2) There was an earlier natural gas boom in southwestern PA in the late 1800's/early 1900's. This gas boom tapped gas deposits closer to the surface trapped in underground sand deposits. It was before the PA DEP existed and was unregulated. Everyone from speculators to farmers were drilling for natural gas willy-nilly, then abandoning the wells when the flow slowed. No mapping, no regulating, no capping the well heads, and nobody really knows where all these old wells are. Many of these old gas sand deposits have been filling up with natural gas again after the old tapping stopped 100 years ago. Probably being fed from the huge shale gas deposits below them. There are thousands of these old wells all over the Pittsburgh area. You can literally build a new house over one and not know it. Same result as the above coal mine example if it leaks into your house. BOOM! The other thing is the coal mining and old gas well drilling took place outside settled areas (i.e. the countryside), EXACTLY where new suburban housing is being built in the Pittsburgh area now. The PA DEP is finding old well heads in new suburbs all the time and trying to cap them. It is literally a race against time before an accumulation of natural gas and more possible explosions occur.

Maybe, a domestic terrorist like Timothy McVeigh...or somebody that stores illegal fireworks to sell? Maybe a contractor that uses dynamite for construction? Just brainstorming here.
I can't think of anything else to cause such death and destruction. It will be very interesting when the cause is revealed.
How tragic for the innocents that had no idea what was possibly going on next door. Maybe, some of the other neighbors will know something.

If the risk was higher, explosions like this would be commonplace. I don't want to dismiss your concern and preference for how you want your housing to look like but, this preference at least in this context, is similar to asking for a private road to all the places you need to go because you once saw a car get t-boned at an intersection.

This happened a year or two ago in my hometown of Lackawanna NY (outside of Buffalo). The house across the street from me exploded. The explosion took the life of an elderly woman in her 80's-90's. The damage was insane, I mean metal pipes went through peoples cars and everything. So much debris. My bedroom is in the basement and the power went out and there was a shake. When I tell you there were thousands, upon THOUSANDS of foot traffic up and down the street. I myself never went and looked. I just stayed on my property. Why? Well it is a very rare and strange thing yes. But as of now my Grandfather out lived all of his friends and no one really visits him, besides family. I would feel some type of way if thousands of random people came to my loved ones house, but did not when he was alive. May all the people rest in peace. It is very unfortunate and sad. How could a house explode like that if it wasn't gas?

So sad, since the past 6-7 years, when you see suburban explosions like this you can’t assume anymore that a gas line caused an explosion like this.😕 Though damage like this, certainly looks suspicious when it’s that extensive. Hope the hospitalized survivor pulls through.

Why can’t you assume gas anymore!?! Actually it usually is gas when something like this happens!!!

@@ZYGTropicals , damage that extensive is not likely a home's gas failure causing it; 1 house damaged probably, not one that levels three widely spaced, 2 story structures! In our current times, explosions this size are more likely of nefarious origin, and this large? Not likely a meth lab either, or evidence of some regional meth manufactury or there would be obvious chemical by product traces and odors that police and fire departments quickly noted and made mention.

This is the fourth house explosion in the same borough. 1996, 2008, 2022, and now this one. It’s definitely a gas line issue that’s going to be covered up again…..

Years to find out ?! If it wasnt a gas leak, then it had to be a bomb. Only a bomb would cause such a explosion like that.
