【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

I almost can't believe that Kotaro actually stopped eating so he could go call Hana to share the feast.
That otter's a better person than most people.
Even more that Hana actually let Kotaro have the rest of the food left. It was like she knew that it was the Professor's special day and let him enjoy it.
That's a damn straight comment. It's a strange world when otters, cats and dogs show more kindness to each than other people to people. We gotta work on that don't we?

As someone who doesn’t know a lot about otters, its mental to see that they can display concept of choosing/prioritising and sharing. Very intellectual animals!

To say that Mom and Dad go all out for Kotaro’s (and Hana’s) birthday is accurate but it’s not even nowhere near the most important thing. Many rich people give their children big and expensive but meaningless birthday parties. It’s like, “Here’s $10,000...go buy yourself a big birthday party” or they just pay for a big birthday party.
If you looked at these birthday parties that Mom and Dad gave their fur babies they do it with so much thought, love and care. I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent the whole day preparing for Kotaro’s birthday party from doing the decorations, to the setups, and the food, etc. It’s simply beautiful and heartwarming to watch. Happy birthday little buddy Kotaro. 😊

@@Stefanie28198 Those phone cases. Best present Kotaro could get. Like Kotsumet said, Otter-box is an American brand (IDK if they have it in Switzerland). Their cases have a reputation for being extremely sturdy.

That was neat he had to get Hana so she could eat with him cute. I wish some parents took 1/3 of there time with there children so this is uplifting. When the present came out they knew it was a gift they are smart and their personalities are so child like. They have another ribbon to collect.

Happy Happy birthday, my precious Kotaro 🎈🎁🍣. I have been watching your video's for about a year now, but I don't normally leave comments, but today I just had to!! You bring such joy into my life. I watch at least one video every night before I go to sleep, so that I fall asleep with warm happiness in my heart. I absolutely love you all - Mom, Dad, Hana and especially you Kotaro (your friends, Aty, Ui, Mr Cat and Otterman too). I am going to ask my son to buy me that coffee mug with Kotaro and the bass fish for my 58th birthday in December (my son LOVES fishing). Mom and Dad, thank you so much for loving and caring for Kotaro and Hana like you do, you are very special, beautiful human beings !! I live near a river that runs into the sea (The Gamtoos River in the Eastern Cape in South Africa) and last year I saw a river otter at the bottom of the field behind my cottage, I was soo excited I could barely breathe. the river otters here are very big and he had travelled a long way from the river (about 2kms). I feel very blessed to have seen him, I think my spirit animal is an otter. Sending you all HUGE love from a warm sunny South Africa 💜💚❤
