I love Assassin's Creed and I have been impressed with most of their historical accuracy so far. There have always been anachronisms that have been included, mostly, I think to assuage modern sensibilities (Caterina Sforza wearing 'boy shorts' in the early 1500's 😉)
This game , I fear, has jumped on the success of the Vikings TV series and has gone that route with its aesthetic.
I will play it anyway, because I'm a fan, but as an history buff and re-enactor myself (albeit late 1400's Italian), no, not impressed.

In my pre 1840’s re-enactments we ... “marvel” ... at movies and whatnot where a character throws (their) hawk/axe. As soon as one throws one’s hawk, then one no longer has that weapon and it is difficult to retrieve, especially if one misses.

  • @willycoyote2866
    @willycoyote2866 Před 3 lety +32

I think that it's a common thing that the filmmakers fits the look of the actors to the fashion of their own time. In the western movies of the fifties all the cowboy heroes had short hair and were well shaved all the time, because men were not allowed to let their hair grow long in the fifties. The authorities didn't want us to look wild. Then after the time of the hippies, we saw cowboys with long hair and beard. Now we have had a time with punk in the eighties, and now we can see vikings with punkhair. I've never seen that in the old pictures drawn in earlier centuries. In the renaisance allmost everybody was wearing some kind of a headdress like a hat or a hut, but the filmmakers of the present time gives them no hat and no long hair, because that's not modern in our time. Look at the painting of Henry the 8! He had long hair, but in the "historical" movie serial "The Tudors" about him he has short hair and allmost nobody wears a hat. My conclusion: Filmmakers are not good at researching.

I think American crows look the closest to common ravens and also have an overlap in range. In the US we also have Chihuahuan ravens and fish crows to muddy the ID waters. Just my bird nerd side coming out. It's something that if done right gives any production massive bonus points for me. Knee length tunic, hose or pants, ankle length turnshoes, a cloth or leather belt about an inch wide, a wool cap or hood (see the Skjoldehamn hood), and possibly leg wraps or or strips of wool ribbon wrapped around the bottom of the pants) all of this over a linen undershirt and Braise (basically Linen shorts), wool socks or stockings (if he’s wearing breaches it would be stockings, secured in place via garter), and that would be sufficient with a spear and shield for a basic commoner to go fight, but if they had a bit more cash, he’d probably have a helmet, and if he could afford it, a chainmail shirt, probably over a padded jacket or possibly over a Klappenrock (wool winter coat), usually just above knee length, and with sleeves coming down to about elbow length

Though he does make a fair point, sometimes you just got to take that moment to remember it’s a fantasy game, take a deep breath, and let it go. So I was gifted this game by a mate from my re-enacting circle with a note dripping of sarcasm claiming it the best game ever and that I would surely have an "unforgettable experience" . Technically not a bad game at all. Shockingly so for a Ubi-soft release. Historically.....I often wished I had simply always been dead. Not even unborn but somehow always dead. If you think the vanilla game is painful, check out the Ireland DLC. Ironically many of the "Irish" in the DLC look more historically correct than any of the "Vikinger" in this entire game. It seems in the 9th century Ireland was at odds with a massive pagan rebellion lead by scores of druids, yes druids, who wanted to purge Ireland of the Vikings and Christianity as well. Said druids running about in Neolithic costumes of furs ,bones, Human skulls and animal skull masks with antlers. It was indeed an "Unforgettable experience".

I’ve played the game a fair and there is a few things that have changed, especially Aelfreds design and also the characterisation of Eivor. Don’t get me wrong there is still a far bit wrong with it but I’d love to see your thoughts after playing (if you have that is 😀)

@@TheWelshViking well, what i was mainly referring to are things like in AC3(american revolution), where Connor wears a modified general tailcoat as his Assadsin Garb, it fits the time period, and has a sense of "Assassin" to it, same with Arno in the French Revolution. He wears alot of clothing, but his outermost cloak is actually a Reddinggoat, which was used around that time period for hunting activities, which means it is durable, can take the wear and tear of running and rolling, and also, if you notice the small detail on Arnos Lapel, there are buttons which attach the hood, which adds the Assassin vibes. Examples like that pull you into the historical realm, and also give major Assassin vibes
Then you look at valhalla, and Evior is wearing leather, and fur on the outside, which makes me think they used Skyrim as a reference instead of historical books. Ofcourse this series isnt 100% perfect, but it atleast used to give a damn

Here's what gets me: the game director said they didn't include proper one handed swords because those would play too similarly to the one handed axes. But they let you use two handed swords from like... the 14th or 15th century. Maybe even the 16th?
Vikings are known for two things: ONE HANDED SWORDS AND TWO HANDED AXES. What do they do in the game? Give you ONE HANDED AXES AND TWO HANDED SWORDS.
Yes, I am aware that vikings also used one handed axes a lot. But, the game director said that they wanted to include the iconic viking axes. And you could easily do that with two handed axes instead!

The fur on the Viking's shoulders is probably to be able to sort them from the Anglo-saxons in a melee, because historically speaking, they didn't look so different back them to the modern untrained eye of the average gamer. It was the same with the boats in AC Odyssey, all sails should have been undyed, but the player needs to be able to tell which is pirate, which is Athenian, which is Spartan.
The Roman/Byzantine looking guys are probably Templars.
As for the Stave church, it's anachronistic, but we know we want to climb that one, right? For example, in AC Unity, they did the Violet-le-Duc's spire of Notre-Dame de Paris, even though it wouldn't be build for another half of century. But isn't it satisfying to climb? Even more so now... T__T
The main character looks more like a hipster cosplay, but about every main character in the series do. I like Ezio or Connor like everybody else, but their clothing are a mess.
The AC series really shine in the little details of the everyday live which we can catch a glimpse here and there. Oh! They are dying with murex here! Oh! They are fixing a roof! Oh! They are building a boat! These are the games where I walk around for hours like a tourist.

I think at least part of it is that historically accurate costumes and weapons would look too simple, and I think there’s a big push in AAA game development to show off the graphics technology. Tunics and plain leather shoes and woolen cloaks with little decoration don’t do that. I could see game devs doing accurate costuming being accused of actually being lazy.
I guess what I’m saying is it’s a combination of audience expectations, a push to showcase and justify the graphics tech, and probably also a big dose of indifference. I’m not defending it btw, just thinking through the reasons.

Christ, I've thoroughly enjoyed this game but I didn't realise the accuracy was so bad. Maybe they tweaked it further in the game itself? I did, however, immediately notice the stave churches and got a little confused. As someone who focuses more on Roman history, I scrutinise the Roman ruins in the game in the same way. It's a similar kind of mish mash of accuracy and outlandish creativity e.g. ruins of humongous aquaducts where they never existed versus accurate placement of bathhouse ruins in some places. They kind of butchered the Mithraeum, too.
Back to the Viking accuracy, I think, for many parts of the content, they just copied and pasted the TV series.
