  • James A. Garfield is often remembered largely for his tragic assassination. However, the path that would ultimately lead to this conclusion was far from obvious. From his humble origins in Orange Township, to his Civil War career, to his meteoric rise to the presidency, to his funeral on Cleveland’s Public Square, there is a lot more behind the “man from Mentor” than is commonly known.

The Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, OH (near Cleveland) is educational, inspirational, and very well presented. Ranger Michelle Seddon gave us a personal/inspirational tour.

Garfield was a superfluous asset of the Lincoln era. Though intelligent, better men had already answered the needs of his generation. His inspired speeches, in reality, addressed nothing of current value. Too bad he suffered so much over a decided outcome of American history. His death was absurd.

There’s a wonderful book I would recommend on the subject. It’s called “the destiny of the republic “. The assassin was a deranged man. Probably manic depressive with delusions of grandeur. He believed for no particular reason that he was entitled to be ambassador to France.

@@vedicapproach8105 that’s what they tell us. But the guy was also in this weird onieda cult. And the guy who killed Lincoln was obviously a Roman jesuit agent. The garfeild assassin may also have some ties to the oppression they just ain’t tellin us abt…

I haven’t really looked into it much but it seems like to me he was assassinated because his views didn’t align with the people really running the show same with Lincoln
