Simple procedure that can extend the life of your vehicle!!
Transmission gear oil:

-Drain and filler plug: 25nm or 18ft/lbs

just a tip, if you can’t fill it up with all the fluid before it starts coming out the fill hole, you can take the speedo cable out and fill from there.
I avoid that issue by lifting one side of the vehicle as I talked about in the video. Also, I don't like that method for two reasons.
1. it allows dirt to fall into the speedo hole when you are fiddling around with that area. It is always a dirty area.
2. if you are unlucky, your speedo gear will fall off of the cable and be stuck inside your transmission. Fishing it out is almost impossible.
Because of this, I try to avoid touching that cable if I can.

Just one question re. transmission fluid change and my 1988 gti cabriolet. Followed your steps but when it came to fill up the transmission with the car jacked up as high as it would go, i could not get the full 2 litres in and it started dripping out after about 1.5 litres went in. This was after draining for 10 mins with the car level. Any ideas why?

Hi. Great straight ahead tutorial, for which I'm grateful. I have a 99 Cabrio, and discovered it needs a GL-4 compatibility. I saw that most of the products available at the local Auto Zone, etc. all had GL-5 and as I understand it, has an additive that is not healthy for the brass components in the upper transmission area. Just thought I would add that, not sure what years are affected. When I type in O'reillys it shows Red Line GL-4 is compatible and Red Line GL-5 does not fit. So maybe there is a difference. Anyway, just chiming in on this topic in case others may benefit from this little nuance that may or may not make a difference. VW brand from stealership is about double the price! Not sure if that is the ultimate gear oil , or not. Happy Motoring regardless!
Long story short, I think those issues are solved. I wouldn’t be too worried. A lot of people run the valvoline synchromesh. The transmission rebuilder that did my VW Vanagon transmission also recommend modern synthetic transmission fluid.

Fernando Rangel depends on temperature. 10w30 if it’s around freezing (winter) and then 15w40 or 20w50 in the summer. Usually 15w40 so that I can also run it until it gets a little cooler. Winter I don’t drive it much anymore because salt is on the roads.

Great, Video Oli! I just did this job on girlfriend's my car, and I had two questions:
My old oil that came out was that same milky grey colour, any concern there or is that pretty common?
Secondly, I calculate that only about 750ml came out of my transmission when all said and done (yikes) but was able to put back in nearly 2 litres. I was obviously low, and getting some first gear difficulties as such. Any ideas where I should start to diagnose?

I’d just change it again soonish and monitor. It’s so cheap to change.
Honestly it’s probably leaking from multiple sources. I’d just monitor puddles and drips under the car. If a lot of drips are occurring then you’ll have to fix things. I need to replace a seal on the trans and will film jt

Your videos have been pretty helpful since I have a Cabriolet 1991, mine is automatic trans.
I changed the speedo cable and reused the cap of the previous gear pinion, but something went wrong and the little cap with the clip got lost into the transmission.
Question, do I have to drain all the transmission fluid and open it so I can find the clip or do you thing It’s not a problem having this part into the transmission? I can buy an after market one as replacement.

Daniel Lozano oof. You really want to find that. Especially if it’s a metal clip. I can imagine that a metal clip could do quite some harm inside.
I’m not sure if draining the fluid is the best way to get it out because there is a chance it’s not sitting at the bottom of the pan...
Hi Oli, Do you know of any other likely reasons my 92 Cabriolet could be popping out of 5th? I don't think the transmission fluid has been low. Was thinking of replacing shifter linkage and bushings first.
Oh man good question. Have you checked the fluid level? Brokevw has a good section on the website that talks about 5th and how to replace it

you can also fill the fluid from the dip stick tube!
No dip stick tube on these transmissions. I think the automatic transmission has a dip stick tube, but I am not sure. I’ve never owned an automatic

Excuse my incompetence, im very new to the world of tools, but a 17mm hex would be that hexagon piece, which you insert in the socket in order to loosen the drain and fill plugs, right?
That is correct! It’s the tool I use to loosen the drain plug. Well worth the money to buy a 17mm hex key (or also known as Allen)

It did in the past. Now we don’t drive it during the salty times. I’ve got new control arms and front suspension sitting in the garage. Just need to be installed.

Hartley Hart usually not really. If you use valvoline synchromesh, it usually helps reduce 2nd gear grinding

Could be multiple things. I'd start with verifying that the shift linkage is connected. Sounds like your buddy has some money to spend getting your shifter or even transmission rebuilt

SAE75W/90 gear oil, meeting VW specification G50 🤷♂️.
Sorry for the delayed comment; a quick internet search reveals that that is gl4 fluid, which should be just fine. If it doesn't shift well, you can always try GM synchromesh. It's a pretty common fluid in these manual transmissions.

Unfortunately I don’t know much about the automatic transmissions on these cars.
I know you say 020 in the title I have a mk4 will this work for that
Absolutely. Almost identical. The full port is just on the front of the trans as opposed to on the side. It’s a little harder to break the fill port loose because a power steering line runs in front of it, but with some patience and wiggling you’ll figure it out.
Next time I do a trans flush on my mk4 I’ll upload a video.

I feel the same as you. Volkswagen says filled for life. Rubbish, I change every 60000km 75W90 full synthetic. Mine has 266000km and still good.
You’re absolutely right there! Keep changing it. It’s so cheap. And makes your metal last long! I’d much rather replace the fluid than try to rebuild a transmission.
At the beginning of the video you said if the 5th gear starts poping out it's too late then. How do I fix that?
That's a good question. I have never rebuilt a transmission. But I bet at least 5th would need replaced, if not a total rebuild. Probably cheaper just to buy a used trans and install it (not more than $500 if you look a bit). Do a clutch, rear main seal, input shaft seal, and shift rod seal at the same time though!
Ah jeez I was wondering why my 87 Jetta had no 5th gear. And to think the guy I bought it from said it has a 4 speed swap. Yikes

@@OlisGarage I'm just going off what some other VW fellas told me. It has the cap on the driver side (Although not green and has no VW logo) so they said it was a 5 speed. The shifter goes into 5th, but it revs like I'm in neutral

Reverse is probably just broken. It’s a separate gear which doesn’t have synchros. So if people threw it into reverse too many times when they weren’t stopped, the gear can be broken.
Or something needs aligned and adjusted.

This is an 020 transmission. Many different gear ratios were used in 020 transmission, so the 3 letter code is irrelevant. This applies to all 020 transmissions

Every 120k miles would be cost effective and more than sufficient.
You do whatever you like on your car.
However, let’s pretend I own the vehicle for 200k miles. That means at a 50k change interval I would change the fluid 4 times. At $25/change that would put me at a total of $100 for the life of the car.
If I did it every 100k, I would save $50. However i would run a greater risk driving it with too low transmission fluid and also just the unknown if the fluid is still doing as good of a job as it was day 1. I did not design the transmission, but I do know a bit about how my oil looked after 50k miles (definitely not close to new).
So for me, I’m going to stick with the 50k transmission fluid swap that I recommend.
You know what they say. If you changed your transmission fluid as much as your engine fluid, all transmission rebuild shops would be out of business.
Don’t you have to add an additional .250 through the Speedo hole after you plug the fill hole? I believe that’s what the Bentley manual states
I have never seen that in the manual. But I also haven’t read it cover to cover.
The spec for an 020 transmission is 2.0L or 2.1qt of fluid. How you fill that in is your choice.
You can mess with the speedo cable and risk a Speedo gear falling off and getting extra dirt in there. Or you can use the method I outlined (which works for every 020 that I know of..I haven’t messed with a vw fox yet).
Brokevw has more info on the topic and he is known as an expert for these transmissions.

so I looked it up and found as follows:
For 020 transmissions only... for trans made before Sept 8, 1987, you add fluid until it starts to run out of the side 17mm hole, then you plug that hole back up, and add 0.5L more fluid into the trans via the speedo hole.
For trans made after Sept 8, 1987; you add fluid to the trans until it runs out 17mm hole (prox 2.0 L)
Since you didn’t mention this I figured I would comment to hopefully help the next guy..

@@vdubskiee5356 I explain it clearly in the video (around the 3:30 mark) that the hole is lower on 87 and prior. Therefore I lifted one side of the car (to raise the transmission) and then fill in 2.0L of fluid.
I elected to make it easier for everyone by coming up with a method that is fool proof no matter what year your transmission was manufactured.
While your information is correct, I already accounted for all of that and explained it in the video.

The side 17mm hole until it started to basically pour back out and I closed that port. I used at least 2 L in doing that but wasn’t sure if I needed to add additional fluid to cover 5th gear because I’m level and couldn’t tip the one side of the car.. appreciate any input thanks

I’m no expert, but that is the general rule of thumb.
@@OlisGarage I put oil in mine today, and did the bushing kit (was completely missing the orange bushing on the shifter rod). It seemed to stay in 5th now.

@@OlisGarage there was none when I pulled the plug. I have a leak on the front main seal. I am dropping the trans soon to replace. Will do clutch while I’m at it
@@redhicks make sure to also do the input shaft seal, clutch push rod seal, and the rear main seal. All pretty simple and if those start leaking they’ll ruin a new clutch.

That is a challenging spot to be.
However, deliberate preventative maintenance directly correlates to vehicle reliability. So if that means cancelling Netflix or other subscription services to change transmission fluid, then I would say it’s worth it.
That’s just my take though.
Also if you haven’t already, make a budget and keep yourself to it. It’s hard at first, but it is very freeing when you know where every last penny goes.

1. It is the right fluid. Check the repair manual and report back with your findings.
2. This vehicle has the EXACT SAME transmission as a mk3 golf.
3. This transmission has no torque converter since it’s not an automatic transmission.

@@OlisGarage interestingly enough, the owner's manual for my 16v Scirocco gives specifications of a 90w, 75w80 or the oddball 80w90. I realize 75w90 seems the most common. I just went with Redline MTL 75w80 and have been loving it!
@@TFritz82 correct. That was before synthetic oils were popular where one could have such different hot and cold characteristics. For example, 5W-40 engine oil didn’t exist either and therefore won’t be recommended anywhere.
Glad you’re enjoying the fluid!! My advice is to change it regularly. 50k miles is what I generally do, if not sooner. It’s inexpensive, why not change it often?
