Building a DIY eBike battery with recycled Samsung INR21700-40T

  • Building this ebike battery from recycled Samsung INR21700-40T cells was just the start of a new hobby - building the smaller more complex ebike batteries turned out to be quite enjoyable. I'll be putting an extra layer of 0.15mm nickel onto the battery to help future proof the battery. It's intended draw will be 50 amps max, but you know how it goes MORE SPEED! or MORE POWER is always needed.

    Nice work Pete, though I think you'll need a bit more beef where the entire pack current goes through just two nickel strips even if doubled up. The inter-parallel connections are fine, but the series connections would benefit by adding copper bars/strips/wire to them.

      @@HBPowerwall I did watch to the end Pete, just think that 50A through 2 x 2 strips is a bit much, but I would be happy if you can test it and measure the voltage sag across the pack, and across individual strips as well as temps.

  • @izzzzzz6
    @izzzzzz6 Před 2 lety

    Did you beef up the series connections? You can draw 35A from a 40T so 5p can try to put 175A through the series strips, (if you had a machine that could demand that much power). If you put a biggish load on the battery for 5 mins or so and feel with you hands the series connections to see if they are getting warm, if they are then you will be loosing power here.

      When doing 50A over these nickel strips, they're gonna get hot. That's why you should be adding paper rings over the positive pole of the cells, to thermally protect the wrap of the cell and the original ring that's in there.

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  Před 4 lety

      The 21700 is a great choice for power wall, considering thats what the new ones from tesla use (not sure if they are using them in the cars yet). The 40T is quite a bit more current than you probably need and it comes at a slight trade off of capacity. Look at the samsung 50E 9.8amp, 5Ah.

      I would assume if the BMS is faulty, replacing will solve the issue - do you have a way of just charging the one low cell? Or is it possible the bms is just reading the wrong voltage and it is really 4.1. I would use caution if your charging and that one cell is much lower than all the other cells will go above 4.2v

    Im about to start doing odd shaped custom batteries in Ireland, is it worth doing do you think? I do it as a hobby for friends and family at the moment but it'd be nice to do it as a good lving. One side note i hope you checked your current runs on that beast, 0.15 x 7mm is good for about 5.5amps per strip (no heat, max 10amp but very hot) according to em3ev. I noticed a couple of series connections there that were only good for about 15amps if i saw correctly just curious if you double up in those areas. I'm new to business, not batteries just incase i come off as one "those" kind of people😛

    When you take them out of the charger, sort them into high to low. As long as you do it when you are moving them from one place to another, it takes very little extra time. Get some single battery wide sorting "boxes" and work from there.
