Thank you all so much for not only the love on this video, but for sharing your love for the characters! It's been so fun reading your comments expanding further on why you love certain designs!
Gallagher fans, I'm sorry I memed on you at 6:55 Here are my legit thoughts:
- I like that we got a more manlier design in a gacha game! His colors are well used throughout his design (black/white/red) making him look cohesive. He does have a lot of belts which I'm not sure is completely necessary (around the shoulders, thigh, etc.) but it's not distracting from the overall design. He's cool. "Hes Thirteen". And he will be missed. :')
i thought i was insane when you skipped gallagher lmao
He's thirteen = dead 💀 nice pun
Tldr:
- Penaconian have good design
- Belobogian have great design
- Other space organization have uniqur desgin
- Xianzhou desgin are...
Common belobog W
belobog is iffy considering seele's design
Seele barely has that snow planet people feel lmao
@@ashrafhakim379 @spacezeppeli7358 Considering Seele was my favorite character back in HI3, I did overlook her flaw in design.
Other Belobogian have 2 distinguish style - The Dark Blue, White, Black and Gilded Gold one represent the nobles and the leaders as a whole and an Old fashioned & washed coloring represent the Underground dwellers.
Seele not fitting on any of these category make her design a bit wacky. BUT there might be some lore to it *wink wink*. Some small lore bomb include Seele Scythe was brought from Sampo, who is notoriously (with Sparkle and The Masked Fools) dangerous and mysterious. Also Seele clothing isn't like that all the time, since we know how baby Seele looked, so it theory that Seele clothing was warped by the Quantum power (either by entering and existing her stealth mode, or she have warped into the Sea of Quanta once), giving it the distinguish Quantum color.
Xianzhou getting the short end of the stick again 😭
5000 years of Chinese culture to draw from and it's just qipao's with leg slits every single time.
THISS
Wait, are you even allowed to say that its not China's fault? What the fanbase says and what you're supposed to say is that the Chinese are incapable of creating or innovating new things. You're really earning that screen name.
Agreed. This game does not feel made by a Chinese company. The same with Genshin maybe except Chenyu Vale.
@@user-ll5fq3tl1jgenshin's liyue characters still all look really different from each other
righttt they all feel like sexy halloween outfits 😭
This is honestly why Hunt March 7th stood out to me in a good way. Her fit's color palette and smaller accessories are genuinely so pleasant to look at, especially as a contrast to her pink hair. Plus points for being one of the most tasteful and modest fits in the entire game as well, just goes to show that you can make pretty designs without relying too much on fanservice. Another character that stood out was Feixiao, she's genuinely just a breath of fresh air as far as Xianzhou designs go, and I really like the blending of her colors!
I REALLY ADORE her design, and I’m so excited to play her! Some people find it weird, but the deep red really compliments her light cotton candy colours and the black makes her look really clean and well-fitted, she just looks comfortable!! And yeah, the modesty with that beautiful shirt is everything to me (hsr when will you release a woman with pants)
@@cloveangel I'm also in love with the red, it's such a gorgeous shade to compliment and bring everything together nicely! Also, same, I've been itching for a playable woman in pants, especially someone from the IPC or Genius Society, for a while now, hopefully one from the Ten Stonehearts^^
Lore thanks: Give Yunli the credit since she choose and give march those drip and this is canon
yes it’s so cute 😭 red works well for her character
@@Riealomea Bless Yunli for giving March one of the prettiest outfits in the game 🙏 Although I'm actually curious whether the dress she gave is standard fashion for the Xianzhou Zhuming considering it is far too different from the Luofu and even the Yaoqing folks.
Honestly it's the Xianzhou designs I'm getting sick of.
I'd have to agree. They're pretty but a lot of it is repetitive now.
I was already iffy about it way back when Yukong came out (too similar to Tingyun), then they just kept using the same template over and over again.
I'm so glad someone else agrees. Penacony designs were getting better but as soon as they announced we're going back to the xianzhou I knew the designs would be doomed. I mean, lingsha just looks like sparkle 😭😭😭😭 it's a shame, bc they obviously have the ability to make unique designs (boothill, aventurine, Gallagher, etc) but they just.. don't in the xianzhou. Even firefly was boring to me tbh, SAM is cool but not her. Idk, the hsr designs always feel so half-assed as is, but it's particular a problem with those ones
Agree it feels like they don't even put too much thought into it and it's always the same concept and shape but recolored with different accessories, like I want to see something else I don't want to pull for reskins.
Even Yunli and Jade aren't so well designed, it's like they're not putting that much passion in them, and it mostly affect the female playable characters.
Don't get me started on the female Xianzhou designs, I was already irked when Ruan Mei came and then they keep doing that with Sparkle. When Lingsha came my hope died, I guess there are still like 5 more new Xianzhou females with this designs.
I think everyone feels this way
One thing I hate is how all the dudes have pants. Like the same copy paste pants. I wish they had the same variety in pants as they do for women.
Only boy/teen characters (Misha, for example) wear shorts. Tall men wear same pants and shoes, well maybe exept for ratio, he wears sandals
tbf the women barely have pants
@@catbear128LOL I love this 😂
Where do you see pants on the women? Cuz apparently I'm blind.

Argenti: *an orphan who grew up in war and killed one of his friends because he was so indoctrinated*
Oh damn, is that from his character story profile?
Wtf i should read his story's 😢
Holy moly goly shit, Argenti actually had a sad past?, I would have literally never thought that
Hold. The fuck. Up. His backstory is really that sad?! Like, i always thought that he was just a crazy man who rizz up everything that is infront of him!
Bronya's earrings match with Cocolia's! That's why they look out of place. She wears them because she loves her mom!
Edit: you can see it on the lc Memories of the Past :')
I just took another look and now I'm sad :') Now it makes sense
They're also a reference to Herrscher of Reason's earrings as they're the exact same (and most Bronya designs from HI3rd and GGZ), so if they stand out from the general colors it was made on purpose as they also do in her other designs
@@hatsunedkaname ooh I didn't know that. Tysm for telling me!
@@noxauranyx And those earrings kinda resemble to Fabergé Eggs, at least for me the first thought was the Fabergé Eggs when i first seen her earrings. Which makes it even better, since those eggs are known for being Russian (the eggs were created by the jewellery firm House of Fabergé, in Saint Petersburg, Russia for the royal family) and Belobog is kinda seems like a Russia reference and the Supreme Guardian is kinda a royalty in a sense (especially with the many slavic sounding names you would find there).
And when SPOILER:
COCOLIA DISINTEGRATES, THE FIRST TO GO AWAY WERE HERE EARRINGS.
Isnt there a quest where all the people Clara helps give her shoes and she basically goes "ahh thanks but these are weird"
Yes, but the majority kinda don't know 😕 🤷
she also says she can't walk with them and keeps twisting her ankles
@@heenthousiast383 yep! Honestly the weird side of the community makes so many weird jokes about her feet, like WHY are they making the feet, especially on a child, sexual?? I get it's a kink but still it's so gross
@@nexaaaaaaa lol. lmao even.
Yes. And she told us in the chat the reason why she doesn't wear shoes after we finish the mission. Most people I see either forget about this fact, don't know about this fact (because they either haven't finish the mission yet or they don't do their own research), or just brush this fact off. That's why most people I see tend to ask "Why doesn't she wear any shoes?" or just feel weirded out by the fact that she doesn't wear shoes, when the game already provided us the reason why she doesn't wear shoes.
How many years will it take for a playable girl to put on some pants like Arlecchino?
Right?? Arlecchino's design is so good too.
What’s funny is that Jade was supposed to have pants! There was a leaked model that released way before her appearance and she had cool looking pants. :(
Maybe the bartender will come one day
A certain Bartender
@@yaycoolgirlswait legit? Damn we were robbed. 😢 I remember the first time we see Jade in the story we only saw her top half and I liked it. Then the full body art came out and I’m like, really? A short skirt? It doesn’t suit how elegant the top half of her design looks.
to be honest...I agree with this take as the repetitive concept of lingerie is just so... boring tbh, even Genshin had more variety despite them using bodysuit as their usual trope
21:45 you forgot black swan
Ruan Mei would look so good in a simple lab coat, turtleneck, and glasses...could add teal streaks to her hair to make her stand out more too.
There are soo many ways to make her personality shines through the clothing, but they slapped the overused female Xianzhou outfit instead, and it really doesn't tell anything
@@foggyfrog But isn't she originates from one of the Xianzhou ships though?
@@tovarishchfeixiao it's surely possible to make her look like she came from a Xianzhou ship without using this overused dress design, doesn't even have to be strictly using a usual lab coat. It's also the way that nothing really stands out in her design and her outfit doesn't really read as manipulative twisted scientist
@@foggyfrogThe only good part os the belt around her tigh that is shaped like a DNA which gives you hints of her function. Other than that, her design is pure soft corn and fanservice.
@@hdmaad even then the dna pictures are just pasted into her clothes. It's a nice touch but it seems lazy. And yes, they waifued her and her design so bad. Even in the story they make the trailblazer simp for her after what she has done, it's just nonsensical. She could be a more compelling character and villain if they didn't force fanservice into her, now she is seemingly just evil but without charms, sad because her characterization got so much potentials.
I've always haaated how they just slap on the same pair of pants and a garter belt on every male character. I still think Dan Heng IL would look miles better with a long skirt, but they're as scared to do that as as they're scared to give female characters some pants, or even short hair. hell, I'd be beyond happy if they explored the myriad of hanfu types that are out there! traditional chinese clothing is more interesting than just this.
furthermore, the maximalist design loops back to being utterly bland. effective character design usually relies on few key characteristics, and I wish they'd bank on that instead. the closest to that I can think of are Clara and the MC.
same for Jiaoqiu he would look so good if he wore hanfu or a long flowy skirt😭
I really love her designs but God when they don't know what to do they just default to the same open shoulder brown chest area, fabric pulled around hips, god it's boring
Ruan mei, tingyun, yukong, lingsha, hanya you have a lot to answer for
Jingliu too I forgot about her design as usual
Well, Tingyun, Yukong and Hanya are all 3 from the same Xianzhou ship, so of course their clothes will be similar because of local fashion. And as for Lingsha, she is also from the Xianzhou alliance (though i'm not sure which ship), so obviously the Xianzhou ships will have somewhat similar clothing overall even if there is some difference ship by ship.
@@tovarishchfeixiaoYou can just take any Chinese outfits and say it’s on the luofu fashion, they don’t need to look THIS similar
@@tovarishchfeixiao There's actually a huge difference in style between ships, it's just that we have too many Xianzhou characters that are from the Luofu, which basically sets a precedent that at least 80% of the characters 3 years from now may end up being people from the Xianzhou Alliance.
Hsr art director is obsessed with women's shoulder. Bro has a fetish. There's no other explanation why 99% of the women from Belobog to Xianzhou to Penacony all have the same off shoulder design.
Considering that the male creator of Mortal Kombat explicitly talks about his thing for thighs in great detail, and that’s exactly why he created Chin Li, I wouldn’t put it past them
And hands, hands definitely
Dude’s the reason girls can’t show shoulder in school
One thing that I find really cool about Firefly's design is that in isolation Firefly looks pretty and that's it, her outfit wouldn't look out of place in a line of fairy-themed Barbie dolls. But that's just half of Firefly's design, because she's a two in one deal, she's both Firefly and SAM. When you look at both of the designs you get some interesting contrast
Firefly's shape language use a lot of rounded edges while SAM is all sharp angles. Firefly's color scheme is soft while SAM is all silver. Firefly's outfit looks highly personalized, like she picked the outfit and all the accessories herself, while SAM looks like it was made in an assembly line. SAM does not have any kind of personalization anywhere in it's design, this is not the armor of some general who need to stand out in the battle field or a proud warrior displaying their trophies and battle scars, SAM's design looks like it was not expected to survive a battle, it looks expendable. The Firefly unit is expected to die fighting the swarm and be replaced by other Fireflies, the pilot does not matter, the armor does not matter, what matters is that they fight, if they live then they have to fight again, if they die then they get replaced.
And just by looking at the design of both Firefly and SAM we can get a sense of the story and character of Firefly without ever seeing the trailer or even playing the Penacony story. We have a character who is highly personalized piloting an armor designed to be expendable, Firefly does not want to die and yet that's all she was expected to do.
This is such an excellent deep dive into Firefly and SAMs design. As a mass created weapon that was even given a syndrome as a 'failsafe' and was all created to look the same, Firefly's design goes out of its way to be very custom and unique to her. Because she is no longer a mass produced weapon, but her own person.
Completely agree with you here that not only is it a well thought out design for both of them, but their two designs further expand on her story!
@noxauranyx poor Firefly is disabled that she had to be inside her S.A.M suit, that she even completely naked inside cause the council of Glamoth never considered her human
Also, her "firefly mode" SAM is a great fusion of the two designs, so it actually makes a 3 design for 1 unit
but can't she customize her armor now.
@ethanleongsem7582 atleast she still wearing her hair associates while begin naked inside
Misha's design in terms of foreshadowing and storytelling is superior
Yes! I had a feeling when he was realeased that he may be important and it was so nice to see that come true. It was the eyes that gave it away for me.
Blade's pants give you that impression probably that he would be wearing a fantasy school uniform... I hate it xD. However, his jacket itself is a reference to a historic chinese tapestry (Lady Dai's Funeral Banner) which may or may not tell you more about his past and immortality.
Oh that's so cool!!
Neat!
I love HuoHuo’s design so MUCH! when she was first dripped market, I didn’t even care if she was a meta healer blah blah or whatever, but upon seeing her TAIL and that nice design, I knew I had to get her.
Yeah! I was blown away with her drip marketing too.
Huohuo is actually a decent healer (blast heals to adjacent team, ATK boost and regen energy on ult, she even has a passive that heals your character when they ult)
sparkle is not from xianzhou but with her design you would think she is from there at first
Yeah! That's what I thought when she first was introduced but had to do a double take. Ruan Mei too.
@@noxauranyx Xianzhou is inspired by Chinese where as Sparkle's design more based on Japanese with the kabuki fox mask on her head and obi-kimono belt. Just saying.
@@andytlwang and yet despite being inspired by two different cultures the designs have so many similarities that it's almost impossible not to believe that sparke is from the xianzhou
Both are asian themed. Loufu is cinese and sparkle is japanese. So obviously similar
@@samuelsalvatore4511they arent "entirely different" 😂 japan took a lot from china including the language. Its like saying uk snd us have completely different cultures 😂
Ruan Mei would've looked so much better in a lab coat.
The thing i see is a lot of the females have one thing very similar, shoulders, chest, and legs are usually exposed. Theyre always wearing heels. Meanwhile the males usually have different and unique designs where they can be completely covered up like Luocha and argenti, or more exposed like dan heng imbibitor lunae or (technically) boothill.
but always with the same pants and pose TT
A little thing to note about Robin is that her dress shares some similarities to the Halovian performer npcs. The split on the side, an ornament at the top of the split, she wears gloves (though not ballgown gloves), and the wing designs mimic the wrapped fabric on the npc dresses.
And with the Belabogians, a lot of them share the white, blue, and black because of their association with the Silvermane Guards. Despite their unique designs, you can tell they are a unit when you group them together. And even though Serval isn’t a member, she used to be. Hence her sharing the white and blue. Lynx is an exception, but her siblings and bestie Pela are associated. So she kind of matches them by associating with them.
It’s all so good!
For a game that travels to multiple universes, cohesiveness of the cast within the worlds we visit is such a nice touch. Belebog did a good job of keeping them tied together while the characters still are unique in their own ways.
Yess, I loved how the Silvermane Guards actually have a uniform and match with the npcs. They have the blue and white and the little metal badges and button designs match too they just vary in gold and silver. Contrast this with Genshin where characters like Gourou and Sara don't even match their soldiers :/
I think in case of Lynx they maybe tried to make her fit into the snowy nature of the planet, since she is well known for camping around in the snowy wilderness. And i guess she maybe have a somewhat different shade of blue compared to the Silvermane's blue.
@@sonyac.8205 But isn't Gourou and Sara on a General's level in rank in their own army? That would make a logical distinction for them to be different from regular soldiers, especially in a time period where the whole Inazuma design came from. While the Silvermane Guards in HSR is more like an organization to be kinda like the police of Belobog in a knight-like style, kinda like what would you see in a medieval style movie in the castle and in the capital marching around like some police/body guard.
@tovarishcheleonora8542 Cocolia has some unique things about her too like I think she has a pin or metal that is unique to her and no other character has the green shawl she does either. But still her outfit shares the color scheme and feels like a high ranking version of the silvermane guards. I wish the Knights of Favonius had a more cohesive theme to them also. Even if they are from different departments or whatever the way the npcs look doesn't resemble the playable characters at all. There's not a single badge or pin or symbol that is repeated in any design that makes me think "oh that's the symbol of the Knights of Favonius"
HSR NEEDS TO GIVE SOME OF THE WOMEN SHORT HAIR AND PANTS 🙏🙏
and were not talking about booty shorts.
@@ethanleongsem7582 REAL
I was kinda disappointed when I realized Feixiao didn't have short hair. I think she looks better without long hair.
I can’t wait till Siobhan is playable
xueyi sort of has that, her legs are fully covered too even if it's shorts and tights
The xianzhou designs do seem a bit samey. They’re good but they’re too similar to each other and I don’t think it helps that the other characters have designs that also share similarities. I read the xianzhou characters as Chinese inspired but Ruan Mei and Sparke as Japanese inspired yet their designs seem so similar to the xianzhou characters that you can’t really tell.
I like Himeko’s dress, it strikes me as Ancient Greek inspired, similar to Dr. Ratio. I like that Himeko’s design seems to pull from a different source than the other characters that sets her apart.
In general a lot of the character designs in HSR use a lot of the same elements and it’s nice to see a different style used for some characters like Himeko and Herta(with her Victorian doll look).
isn't ruan mei also a chinese name?
@@rafaela00002 I don’t know about that. I guess it feels like that to me because she has a sakura/cherry blossom thing going on which I associate with Japan. There’s no indication, as far as I remember, of her being from a xianzhou ship so I guess I assumed that she wasn’t.
@@andrewcook4873 yeah, i guess we'll have to wait for the game to give more information about her for us to know where she's from

15:38 the reason why she wears the choker is also the reason why her voice got affected so much when the Harmony in Penacony was tainted. And once you've figured it all out, her deal with Jade was even more tragic

The new xianzhou ladies are changing it up at least! yunli and feixiao both look fairly distinct, though im not too big on lingsha's look
For Xianzhou, it's likely a Xianzhou cultural thing and local fashion. While Yunli and Feixiao are generals of other Xianzhou ships, and it seems that generals tend to have clothes that look different from other people on the ship, maybe to emphasize the rank difference.
@@tovarishchfeixiao Yunli is related to a general, not a general.
Oh my God, I agree with your comment so much and especially about Black Swan! Like when I first saw her in the Myriad Celestial Trailer I ABSOULETLY loved her design and even considered pulling for her. But after her full model was revealed, something just felt...off. It was as if she lost some of her gorgeousness from the Trailer... Idk it's just her lower body looks like a copy paste of Kafka's, except it actually fits Kafka while it just looks weird on Black Swan. She definitely deserves a long flowy dress, it would give her vibes/aesthetic more! :')
Serval's outfit shows her scientist and rockstar roles btw!
idk if it’s just me but lingsha’s design exhausts me. it’s just sparkle with xueyi’s outfit and a touch of hanya. feixiao’s outfit is a little refreshing with the shorts and tank top but lingsha makes me want to smash my head into the wall. even a touch of a unique clothing color like a flashy pink/coral or orange and silver accents or hair color like a silvery brown would make me hate it less but when she was revealed i just sighed and moved on with my life. i’m sick of the red and gold pallet that’s been used one too many times now.

I would say Yunli is pretty fresh too, but moreso because she came from Zhuming. Same with Feixiao since she came from Yaoqing. Luofu's designs for females are just mostly boring outside of those you already mentioned.
The women must almost all have bunions and sore feet, since most run around in pointed heels all day.
This is my key evidence that fanservice is top priority. Jade is all fanservice, no substance. My proudest banner skip of my life.
> Looks once
> Ya'll are delusional these designs are fire

i think huohuo is one of the best luofu designs so far (alongside dan heng) !!
mainly for 2 reasons:
1. the tail. it stands out against the other foxians, also it’s literally a whole 2nd character! huohuo’s design *is* her personality. and i think that’s lacking in a lot of the other characters.
2. a cohesive color palette, an interesting design choice, overall taking a different route in terms of patterns from the other luofu characters.
i’m so sad i didn’t get her on her first run (i had taken a break, come back the last few days and didn’t get her sadly)
She's on the banner rn. She's very adorable! The whole deal with her tail is funny too
when could they recreate such a top tier design like kafka 😅
"Your final challenge. Make a female character who isn't just wearing tight thigh highs, short shorts, bare legs, a bunch of exposed holes, and showing a lot of shoulder and armpit."
"Oh hell, nah player, you're tweaking."
I think making the outfit somewhat more realistic will make it look better (as in the shapes not colours) cause some outfits just make the character look naked and not in a good way (its no even hot just kinda weird)
they;re trying so hard to be sexy they loop back around to being unsexy
Something that contributes to the design fatigue that a lot of people dont talk about is the fact that they all have the same posture/ standing animation. Something that could easily break apart their designs is if star rail made an effort with giving characters custom idles and not just the same reused standby animation for every character
the thing I love about Ruan Mei's design is the DNA-double helix spirals that are prevalent in a lot of places. Her hairpin, the sides and flaps of her dress, are all really nice since she's experimenting with creating life!
I found them having a weird direction in character design that they're not focusing and sometimes ignoring silhouette. No character have crazy voluminous hair or big ass horns or ect... to make the silhouette stand out. I would argue thats Clara or Firefly have this by having a huge ass robot, or Topaz for having a pig pet, but on their body alone there isnt much they just a rectangle. Overall the design fell bland because no matter how much details you put on their minimal outfit to make it busy they're just going to look like the same thing in a different font. And at least if your design is bland, make their default pose different, everyone is just A posing didnt help.
LOL you are so right here!!!! it's pathetic that they're all like A posing with blank faces in the character screen it rly emphasizes how bland their forms are. they seemed to put more effort in their like splash art but you barely ever get to see it. meanwhile in zzz I'm flipping thru menus just to watch my characters posing
All the male design having coat at back
I love them but it's kind of getting stale 😭😭
i tend to find the male designs more varied when it comes to the front but yeah i agree with the back portion lol
I wish they have women characters that actually have them cover their shoulders. They can implement traditional hanfu for Luofu characters, there are like a lot of different kinds of hanfu dresses so it’s close to impossible for them to over use it.
But then the problem of some people would be "it's too historic".

I didn't even know there was a term for this lol, and thought I was the only one feels this way! When they announced we're going back to Xianzhou after Penacony I was so bummed, like why?? Can't we explore a new place before we go back there? And apparently the Xianzhou quest will span across 2 updates and we'll get more characters with the same design! I only returned for Penacony and now that we're done maybe I'll take another break from HSR
i also returned for penacony after quitting back in 1.2 ...its not helping my motivation to advance in the story at all
I think the reason hoyoverse doesn't release a new planet/region is because it would take to long to design it's easier to release 1 or 2 new areas of an already released planet every patch then have to create a new planet with a new aesthetic, story, mechanics and many areas every 4 patches. That's why they only release new planets every version so they don't have to rush the process and so they deliver a quality product.
@@charlottechen4499 And that would also ruin the "new planet/nation in every X.0 patch" tradition.
Well, the Xianzhou designs look similar because of Xianzhou cultural things and local fashion (Hoyo tend to be very deeply detailed about how they do character designs once you analyze them in small details), while Penacony had lots of people from various places around the universe.
I want a new Belobog character. Justice for one of my favorite planets that I’m too sentimentally attached to and can’t move on from 🤧
Xianzhou feels like an obligatory mandate to be included rather than an inspired setting.
Rarely do Xianzhou characters peak my interest. Like the newest announced Lingsheng is just "older-looking" Sparkle. Yunli's design hits me all in the wrong ways in both character and gameplay design. Fei Xiao is alright. I forgot about the male Foxian just like Hoyoverse themselves.
Older characters suffer too. Like Huo Huo having the worst disconnect between character design and gameplay, Ruan Mei looks too much like a Xianzhou character because there isn't much to differentiate herself to look more like a Genius Society member, Guinafen has nothing that conveys her "non-nativeness" to Xianzhou nor her being a streamer and Xueyi has nothing in her design that conveys she's an automaton.
That doesn't mean all Xianzhou designs are bad. Bailu and Dan Heng IL both do the Long dragon theme and hit the mark in different ways. Fu Xuan conveys everything about her being a mystic/seer. Huo Huo (character design not gameplay) is one of my favorite designs and character dynamics. And can't talk about best Xianzhou design without mentioning Jingyuan himself.
Ummmmm, just because Ruan Mei is part of the Genius Society that doesn't means she can't come from one of the Xianzhou ships. And as far as i remember, there is no uniform for the Society.
And obviously Guinaifen will have similar clothes like the locals if she lives there for long enough and plans to stay even longer. And she kinda has a street performer vibe to her outfit, which she originally is.
Guinaifen makes sense since she's trying to integrate and be a citizen of the Luofu, but since her real name is "Guinevere" and her brother is Lancelot, it would be interesting to see her in a western style outfit

Wait... are you saying that Argenti never washed his hair since the war on his planet? lol
@@tovarishchfeixiao game logic 😭
Here’s a question. Should we evaluate character’s design just in a vacuum, or should we also take into account their lore. For example, Blades’s design looks a little bland but given that it’s Blade, it makes sense. Arlan’s design looks nice but really out of place given that he works on Herta’s space station. He looks more like someone from Belobog underworld.
Arlan's design kinda gives that "bad kid" vibes, which somewhat fits his personality in my opinion. And yeah, Hoyoverse's character designs are very deeply detailed into the lore. You usually can tell a character's origin, element and some stuff about their background story and overall lore just by analysing the character design.
Arlan works in security though so I feel like his design fits the theme of his job.
Male chara actually have better design than female because it gives hints of the chara's function or personality. Blade's design is full of ancient chinese martial sword master references. From the way he hold his sword, to his shard sword itself, the pattern of his vest and the draconic pupils he inherit from Shuhu.
But I guess everything is blank in the eyes of the blind.
i think you should always take the lore into account. character design matching the lore is one of the most important parts imo
character designs should give a read into the characters personality and background i think.. you should link lore with the design and see if the two are in unity.
I pray for HoYo to give us a skin for Sparkle wearing her red & black dress from the It's Showtime lightcone.
i love her outfit in that lightcone!! it looks so cute
Our only hope are skins. I hate the price but Genshin skins have a lot of thought and effort put into them, we just need more.
honestly, the luofu designs bother me the most
the designers are STILL doing the same damn design of qipao but it has to be sexy with a leg slits
like lingsha, one of the upcoming characters deadass just looks like a brunette ruan mei with how similar their outfits are
i don't mind designs that are more fanservice-y (it's a gacha game so it's expected) but i wish designs weren't so repetitive
The most unique female design in Honkai imo is Kafka and the male counterpart design is Gallagher.
Haven’t seen anyone say this but I think Sam’s base form design is far better than the enhance. Yes the enhanced more resembles her molten knight title but Sam’s base form just screams intimidation. The kick looks so powerful and feels powerful just to do 3k on no break 😭. The move where she leaks up into the air could’ve been a very cool nuke if a different Sam ever gets released which probably won’t ever happen.
REAL
Baseform Sam is everything you could want from a classic scifi mech soldier, really showing off the size, the metal, and the intricacies of the design while the enhanced form feels like a bit too much. Also extremely sad about the swords in combat instead of punches/kicks. It genuinely made Sam feel unique, like the mech itself was the weapon. Adding swords just makes combat feel less brutal and impactful.

The white side repeents the lab coat and more professional look that scientists and researchers wear. While the black side of her deisgn is meant to look like her rockstar punk look. It 100% looks super confusing without that knowledge. And this is just how i interpret her design!!!
The xianzhou in general is my least favorite "planet", cast of characters, and story by far. I am SO tiered of the luofu
what I dislike the most is Sparkle's design, it's cohesive and pretty good, but if you took her design to a person who didn't know what a Masked fool was, aka someone who just did xianzhou or something, they would not be able to tell she wasn't from the xianzhou, just guanaifen kind of but different
The way my thoughts were very similar to this before her trailers released. But now Monodrama is probably my favorite trailer of all time from Hoyoverse.
@@noxauranyx yes omg I love her trailer, but what I really don't like is that there is literally no storytelling involved in her design, but maybe that's what sparkle wants because she doesn't want to give anything away, there's storytelling reasons for it but I think it would have been so much more interesting another way
Maybe you can't. But it's obvious that Xianzhou is more Chinese inspired, while Sparkle's clothing is very obviously inspired by Japanese kimono. It's just that you and maybe a very few others can't tell the difference because your eyes are not trained enough.
@@tovarishchfeixiao I wanted to talk about that actually, my main gripe was not the individual cultural aspects of the costume, but the silhouette and general cut of the cloth if you catch my drift, also as a chinese person myself I don't think HSR's outfits are really good representations of culture anyways, like tingyun to me is literally not super chinese inspired anyways, yukong, DHIL, it's fine, but yeah

If Sparkle didnt have the same open shoulder and boob cup top as the Xianzhou characters it would have been easier to tell she's actually supposed to look Japanese... imo that kinda ruined the design and made her look like every other girl instead of a different culture.
Xianzhou's feels like bootleg space Liyue. I will take Shenhe's OG outfit over any of the Xianzhou girls' any day of the week.
I just think we're so saturated with Chinese designs. Most gacha games are from China and it's like mandatory they have China inspired region. But because you can only have so many Chinese designs, what happens is it's hard to make something that will stand out.
Genshin, Tower of Fantasy, Star Rail, WuWa, all have Chinese inspired regions.
Eh, I do think it's somewhat of an HSR specific issue.
No one ever thought Liyue female characters (for example) were particularly similar looking, even though a lot of them are still chinese inspired. HSR just overused a specific silhouette imo, and they kinda need to change it up at this point if they want the complaints to stop.
Chinese inspiration isn't the issue here, the boring silhouettes are.
@@feathersinthewind Good point. I suppose Genshin Liyue females do have distinct clothing styles.
@@feathersinthewind What if they did it on purpose? Since in HSR we only seen a single ship of Xianzhou so far, which obviously will have clothing similar to each other, because of local fashion and culture, though other Xianzhou ships might be somewhat different but likely will have similarities amongst the alliance ships since they share their culture with each other. And Hoyo games tend to go very very deep in design details once you analyze them very thoroughly.
They hardly tapped into Chinese fashion. They only use the same recent history dress types while there are many hanfu styles from different dynasties.
Like I'm frustrated that they all use the Mandarin type collar when most traditional hanfu has y-shape overlapping collar. Maybe it's to distinguish from Japanese kimono because kimono borrowed that style? But man, it's just reinforcing people's stereotype of Chinese fashion while abandoning what were originally Chinese designs to be associated completely with japan, which is made worse by the fact that these games' Japanese characters all have those elements instead. If you look at past hanfu, especially Qin/Han era you will see that those styles were the ancestors of kimonos, but are no where found in Chinese (global gacha) games while always on Japanese characters.
Maybe it's just the global-facing gacha games that are afraid to tread outside the stereotypical styles, there are internal-facing games and non-gacha games that are not like that. It's probably improving though, eg. some HI3 manga and stigmata art; Xiao with his demon mask (that people mistake for a Japanese thing when it has always been Chinese in origin); wuwa Jinzhou NPC wearing y-neck inner shirt.
WE NEED SKINS
Skins would be so cool!
I NEED TOPAZ IN PANTS
i would give anything for a character that wears a hanfu or qipao on the xianzhou. tingyun and ruan mei would have been the prime characters for it too. also if they would include any different skin colors that would help some, but even then the same face syndrome for the female chars is crazy
I will say though even though Ruan Mei's design suffers from the same problems, if you look closely she has little DNA helix shaped accessories, so that's a nice touch pointing towards how she's obsessed with researching life and biology
My biggest issue with HSR is that its designs keep making me forget that this was meant to be supposed space fantasy game. HI3 looks way more like what one would expect out of "space fantasy" game than HSR. If you piled up pictures of all Xianzhou characters (upcoming ones too), perhaps even added characters like Robin, Argenti, Firefly (without Sam form), etc. and let someone who knows jack about HSR to guess in what time period/setting the game would take place... I'm putting my hand on fire that barely anyone would think of this being a futuristic setting, set in space.
This wouldn't be a problem, if not for a fact that designs like these are in majority compared to, idk, actually fitting game designs like SW, Screwllum or Topaz? The fact that we are going back to Xianzhou brings me least joy precisely because Xianzhou is most guilty of what I'm talking about. Just look at upcoming characters and how they look. Jiaoqui and Lingsha being the worst abominations when it comes to those. One looks like NPC and the other looks like badly AI generated Sparkle if you asked AI to put Sparkle in Xianzhou clothing.
In HSR they obviously give an emphasis for reflecting the lore, and the planet's culture/fashion in the designs. Just like how you wouldn't walk around in astronaut suit on Earth even if it was in an era of Galactic tourism.
Feixiao stepping out of that design zone
Shes so badass
She's different, but pretty dispointing for a general. Good design actually gives you hints of the chara's function or personality.

I’ll preface this by saying that I am in complete support of unique designs, don’t get me wrong but there are a lot of factors that influence design subliminally.
It doesn’t fit within their character design pipeline. The whole point of a pipeline is to streamline a process seamlessly and using their character physics engine and animation skeletons as much as possible. Non-humanoid animation is the furthest thing from streamlined. Just look at how unique Something Unto Death’s movement is and just think about how complex the skeleton rig is and all the potential clipping issues the design team had to wrangle with.
These issues don’t easily get fixed by throwing money at it. The small lag in managing this much stuff at the same time can build up and delay other projects.
@@niteyknight503 or don't, that make millions while using the same character model and design. And if it's working for them, why would they change?
I'm playing through the new story on the Xianzhou and I just met Linsha, I think thats her name.
Whoever designed her and almost every other female character on this space ship, needs to stop. I would have liked her design better if some of the elements weren't so common, but it just makes me appreciate Feixaoi and Yunli or when they introduce a male character.
Yunli had a lot of thought put into her design. I wish the male characters weren't ALL wearing pants come on now
Kafka GENUINELY reminds me of Attack on Titan.
i really dislike the defense of "duh they come from the same region ofc they dress similarly"
cuz like...do people think same region = same clothes?? in my area sure some fashion sense might be similar, but your clothes isnt just determined by where you live. A livestreamer, a cop, a politician, a strategist, a doctor will dress differently in their day to day. Money separates the access you have to stuff. heck even subcultures (even ones by internet) affects your style. gui isnt even a native right? she moved to luofu and assimilated that easy in terms of fashion? nothing about her stands out as an immigrant. an outsider becoming a streamer and she dresses like a native
Yeah exactly, also there's so many different Chinese cultures to pull inspiration from?? They did this with Yunli which is a step in the right direction.
Hi hello, I need to point out some things for additional info for the characters whose lore I do know
"why doesn't Clara wear shoes" she addresses it in one of her texts, they make her twist her ankles easily because she's not used to wearing them. Do I think it's a good explanation? Sure. Do I think it's a good execution? Nah. At least cover her legs some more to have an "oh she compensates by wearing this thing"
Guinaifen's design looks like Xianzhou fashion for the same reason she uses the name Guinaifen and not her birth name, Guinevere: Adapting to the culture of the place she moved to!
Seele's design is a half/half thing, one side representing her tougher persona and the other representing the butterflies she associates with
Serval's design is also a half/half thing, one side representing her attachment and love for rock'n'roll while the other side represents her past as a scientist, which she also loves and still treasures
I would also like to add my own little rant
i’m a massive design dweeb and the large majority of the designs in my opinion are genuinely amazing; some personal favourites are argenti, huohuo, aventurine, bailu and boothill.
one that sincerely pisses me off and has for time now is ruan mei. she’s one of my favourite characters lore and story wise but oh my lord they could’ve done SO much more with her design. it was borderline irritating to look at her because she’s such a brilliant and unique character (i mean come on??? she’s trying to be a god???) and the only reason people pay attention to her is because “haha boobs” lmao
don’t even get me started on all the xianzhou designs; boring, repetitive, overdone. so much you can make and create and take inspiration from in terms of chinese culture and it’s just the same lingeriefied qipao, with smidgen of a hanfu/or longish sleeves. nothing remotely interesting. i’m full on blaming jingliu for this because after her release any character from the xianzhou ended up looking like repeats.
I love Jingliu but I agree with you. Ruan Mei's outfit needed to be more scientific.
It really does suck how similar most of the girls look, especially when they're side-by-side in a cutscene
All the guys: long pants
All the girls: revealing clothing
idk why I never noticed acherons boots being different size and now it annoys me
As a professional gold digger for the marketing division, topaz outfits makes total sense, who would deny a loan from her hue
She's not a gold digger but a debt collector. One is a joke, the other is a menace. And Topaz's design is anything but menacing.
One of the things that can make characters feel samey is the base model is the same for a set of characters, like the height. If they made the heights a little more different it would help the designs a lot
I think black Swan is the character wearing the most belts. I'd love to hear your thought on the new outfits we saw for the 10 stonehearts in the myriad celestia trailer.
Stellaron Hunters so far is my favourite design.
Silver Wolf is the best version of Bronya imo
We need Ruan Mei in a Space Station uniform!
when it comes a large of hoyo games they often use the same models to save on time. However there is a limit to when this eff just meshes into the "same face syndrome."

@@tovarishchfeixiao I mean the reason why people think Sparkle's design is similar to the Xianzhou ones is due to some of Hoyoverse choices, they made her Yukata really small, like normally when people shorten a characters Yukata they add shorts to give the yukata some focus, but overall just lenghtning the sides of the yukata might be enough, if they flow well, the yukata doesn't cover her shoulders, if it went till her shoulders and stopped more or less where a t-shirt would've stopped, you could easily differentiate her from the Xianzhou females, in a quick glance.
That’s not an excuse. Just look at the designs of their sister game Genshin’s Chinese inspired nation of Liyue. All the characters have incredibly unique designs that all evoke a Chinese vibe.
HSR is simply not on par with GI’s design team.
Yes finally someone who’s talking about this! This is a huge reason why I can’t get into this game :( I usually tend to prefer to play female characters and every other one that comes out from this game has the same outfit/ design which is disappointing
Every single character has the twin tail design on their backs, literally. Either the hair or a piece of clothing but they all have 2 symmetrical things hanging off. I have no idea whats up with that tbh
they usually end up splitting the hair like that so the back of design is visible. I mean, you’re going to be staring at the character’s back most of the time while playing, so it’s gotta look interesting lol

Pretty fun fact: Vagrants from Belobog tried many times to give clara shoes, but she finds it really hard to move in them and if i remember correctly, she twisted her ankle once. So Clara just decided to not wear shoes
Xianzhou designs are either the same outfit or the same colour palette, even the new ones, with some exceptions
