I actually really like the designs and muted color aesthetic. it gives the game a uniqueness that separates it from other open world rpgs that it competes with, and gives it a sense of realism. And there are still designs like encore, Verina, yinlin, jihnsi, changli, etc that have different palates. It just makes everything fit together more nicely, and while not every character has that uniqueness that genshin has, with the setting of the game and the storyline, I think the muted color and more realistic approach fits the game better,

Just cuz you can't have rainbow bubbly color designs doesn't means you can't have even the bare minimum color variety. With Changli and Jinhshi out, we're nearing atleast half the roster where their primary colors are white mixed with a secondary minor color
Atleast black universally looks cool but white by itself is a boring color which very few people can pull and most importantly, this is a gacha game. It doesn't matters if Wuwa's Genshin 2.0 or not but characters need to differ and look different from each other. Colors play a major part in separating characters from each other and if we end up getting a roster where half of the characters look nearly the same, that also on a boring color, people might stop pulling, no matter how meta the certain characters are.

I like most of the designs even though there is a lot of a similar color palette. But the jiggle physics are too much IMO, especially characters like Yinlin, she looks good, she doesn't need to have perpetual motion boobs spinning while she stands still. If the onigiri pants were too much I think they need to realize a lot of us find the insane physics distracting too. I do kind of hope the designs stray more from Genshin and other games with characters like Calcharo. Some of the designs are so close to Genshin characters they feel more like Hoyoverse characters than some actual Hoyoverse expy characters.

Her boobs are literally rotating separate from each other, she could be breathing like a track star that just did a marathon and it wouldn't make her boobs just go all over the place in her dress. And that next point is also no true, characters like Taoqi, that kind of top would not be moving like that, same thing with Changli not to mention all 3 have no practical reason to have outfits that allow their boobs to do any of that, 2 of them are warriors with claymores and Yinlin's whole outfit doesn't really make sense with her character. She's trying to blend in and sneak around but she has the most eye catching sexual outfit. You can try and spin it but the reality is they look like that just because females in these games sell sex. The guys actually are designed for their function because they don't usually sexualize them for sales in the same way and that is off putting for people like me that would rather all the characters match their function instead of the girls just being overly bouncy at every opportunity because they want guys to pull.

Personally i really do like Jianxin's design.
-The mostly black and white color scheme, representing Yin and Yang and her taoist ideals.
-The outfit being a relatively modest outfit compared to a lot of the cast, but still having a bit of skin to show that, although she's from the mountains and grew up as a monk, she's very free with how she thinks while still being able to uphold her taoist ideals. Although i feel this COULD have been done a little more nicely by making the outfit a LITTLE bit more consistent, and maybe even add more flowing aspects to emphasis her aero element/free flowing nature, like a long, detached sleeve or something rather than her long arm length gloves. I feel its good enough as is.
-The stupidly long Ahoge. Honestly i just really love it lol.
And yeah, i feel less crazy knowing im not the only who feels like Female Rovers design feels really weird in a lot of places.
    -the random straps
-Her...shorts? When you look at them and think about it, dont make ANY sense dimensionally
-The BIG ASS BOW that is glued to her head.
Great video though! Definitely interesting to hear what you had to say about things.

a lot of people have already pointed out that the muted colors and being mostly black and white across the board fits with the world more due to the post-apocalyptic setting but the character’s outfit also doesnt look too out of place or outlandish overall
if you compare the clothing of playable characters in genshin to their npc there is a stark differences in design, their outfits feel over designed while the npc’s outfit is under designed like if you modded the npc to a different game with a similar fantasy setting of the same regional inspiration you really wouldnt be able to tell if they were native to the game or not but if you modded the playable characters instead they stick out like a sore thumb yet in wuwa outfits like what jiyan, mortife and sanhua wears wouldnt look off if given to npc outside of a few pieces like jiyan’s green outerwear for example or sanhua’s accessories, there are some outliers like changi and verina but wuwa’s outfit doesnt standout at a glance until you scrutinize it and rely on a few splash’s of colors or extra details to personalize it with the characters themselves
their outfit has an attention to detail that is both subtle yet still unique in contrast to genshin’s visually loud outfits

I kinda disagree as the muted color is very common in this setting. It also helps make any bright colors like skills and burst stand out. If it does add more bright colors, it would be harder to see the parry mechanic. On itself it does look monotone and dull but it does work very well with this game, but in a game like genshin it wouldn't work as well.

Basically this yeah, the art style should not clash upon itself but also not upon the game. I still play Genshin and Tower of Fantasy along with WuWa and holy bajeezus ToF had a time where they NEEDED to clean up the visual clutter from the start of design. It looks really cool but most times I just aim where I see damage numbers because I can't see anything. Having a function to just lower the effects opacity is not a good solution. Fortunately newer characters did not suffer that disastrous decision and started to look more clean like Genshin.

To give more clearance - Kokomi is not a General btw, General is Goro and he is not originally a military guy, but he began leading the rebellion, Kokomi is a Priestess of Watatsumi Shrine and her design is literally telling her story and even story of her bloodline, that forcefully made her a Priestess (no more spoilers), even when she did not want to... So Kokomi should have no details that pointing that she is some sort of General, cos she is not one and she is not a leader of an army......... Pope in Crusade wars did not wear any specific uniform that points that he is a head of entire army.
P.S. - Goro's design references the Jokyo Sodo and Shimabara rebellions and have a lot of from Tsukiyomi-no-mikoto and his outfit is shozoku and he wears tekko, hakama, and kyahan, so sorry, but ironically Goro have one of the most realistic designs in the game to real history..... 🤷‍♂

I do like the designs better in genshin since they stand out more. But i think both the tone and settings of the games play a part, too. In genshin, it's taking place during what we would consider 16 to 1800s, where flashy designs were the norm, especially in high society. Whereas in WuWa, its more modern where simplicity and function is the more prevalent style. I think the outfits fit the respective tones of their games at least.

In my opinion, I like the color palette in WuWa. With the setting of the game, the designs to me really fit in with the aesthetic.
We all know this game is a competitor to Genshin, so this more "mature" style is a way WuWa can differentiate itself with Genshin's more "anime" characters. I do not read manga nor manhua, but I feel like that is a good comparison here. _"Normal"_ manga is much more stylistic than those _"mature looking"_ manhua videos I see on TikTok
+The current team I am running is Calcharo, Sanhua, and Baizhi. All these characters have that black/white/gold color scheme which I absolutely love. The least visually appealing character to me is Verina.
+ The muted red WuWa decided to add for their characters (Danjin, Chixia, Yinlin, Changli, Moretefi) and dark blues (Jiyan, Yuanwu, Yangyang) is super nice to me!
    - These less poppy colors help balance the physically eye catching outfits the characters have.

When it comes to balancing details of a character between the top and bottom, is a situation that would pertain to vtuber models. If it is bottom heavy, the model will look too simple because 99% of the time you only see the top half, but if you put detail on both parts, it can become overcrowded. Luckily it's a 3d character model so you can do either.
One important thing to note is that each character designs at least by my interpretation, doesn't focus on individuality but culture, clothing trends and profession, which makes not the characters individually unique, but communally unique (such as people from different factions, areas, etc).
We'll be getting more and more of the world unlocked, so it will be easier to differentiate between characters, also Kuro's previous game, PGR, their designs become more unique while still upholding the black/white aspect. It includes the enemies.

Just wanna talk about how most of these designs don't make any sense at all as clothes or outfits--to the point where most of them look AI-designed, then real artists cleaned up the generated concepts. Chixia is easily the biggest offender, just mentally imagining what it's like to put on or take off her outfit is a headache and actually examining her clothes reveals they make NO physical sense. Her top is made of three completely separate garments, she's wearing half of a jacket, and the thing around her waist isn't even a shirt or coat--it just looks like one. Jiyan also only has half a coat with the illusion that it's folded up and every segment of Yinlin's design is inconsistent. Game looks absolutely gorgeous, but I would be surprised if all of the designs were made by real people.

    • @LUCAS420BLZ
      @LUCAS420BLZ Před 11 dny +3

Chixia basically has on a poncho and is rocking shorts and a sports bra or bandages
What makes you question that the team used ai to design the characters
Yinlin had her design altered before Jiyan is the only character unchanged
Chixia was an entirely different being before
Back then all the characters had no sense of style or variations they all looked the same
feel free to check out the old chixia model it's a night and day difference
The only thing I can say about her design is out of everyone she's got the most random assortment of things on her
I think it adds to her free spirit of a character who's constantly on the go
Her hands light up when she shoots I'd be surprised if her clothes burned up and that's why she wears shorter clothing

Honestly I prefer wuwa’s designs so much more, (and I say this in the perspective of an artist) for the simple fact they aren’t overstimulating for the eyes, compared to other games and I’ll use genshin as an example, I don’t think they want the characters to stand out more than the others since the designs follow the fashion trends of Jinzhou , culture, as well as the utilities of their clothes.
And I honestly thought that these characters have less color variety than Genshin characters, but after analyzing, they actually have the same or even more variety, since Genshin normally doesn’t use different colors, they use one color with different tonalities as a way to stand out more, also, Genshin characters require very recognizable shaped characters since most of their models are the same, while wuwa has slightly different models for every character, which differences to every character. You can take dynamic as well, most of wuwa characters have triangle shaped or circled shaped clothing or proportions which has a huge impact in humans eyes.
So even if people think there’s no variety then idk maybe it’s personal preference, I like the monotone characters cuz it’s a apocalyptic setting (and I use glasses too so bright colors aren’t a friend of mine) 😭😭

I think having a design motif is what makes wuwa designs so much better than other gacha games. Say Genshin or even HSR makes me feel like i'm playing fortnite Goku vs Lebron James vs Sonic and Knuckles shooting ak47s and shotguns and skateboarding on rockets. Every character feels so out of place and goofy. It's impossible to take anything seriously. Even just casual chats are the goofiest things ever, because the designs are so out of place from the world. In wuwa while it's obvious who the playable characters are, and Jiyan is pretty out of place (not as out of place as hoyoverse characters ofc), but like you said he at least feels like his role as a general, and everyone else seems normal-ish. And it helps that Jiyan's design is very cool on its own.

Personally i really like the black and white being incorporated into a lot of the designes i do think that Baizhi and Jinxun look too similar unless its revealed that they are related, but i still like both of theur designes. For the most part, to me the black and white and a third colour work to make the characters feel like they are a part of a cohesive organization and the overall design help make these characters feep like actual people. For me genshin does have good designes but they are way too busy and way too colourful. This more muted desugne is a lot more pleasant to my eyes and reminds me of a lot of my favorite anime like Bleach, JJK, Akame ga kill and Fate stay night, whereas genshin reminds me more of Salor Moon, Madoka Magica, MHA and Konosuba.

  • @AratakiBullPowerSiddo1

I don't agree on the Male Rover and Jianxin
Jianxin 100% needed that design due to her yin yang motif and the Male Rover has a simple yet cool design. Black is universally accepted as a cool color and sometimes, a man just needs some simple black clothes to look good
Besides that, I agree that there's too much of the black and white colors being used with a secondary minor color
It doesn't matters if the games are post apocalyptic or not. Color variety in your characters, even if it's the bare minimum, do matter, especially in a gacha game where you want your characters to sell. Nobody will want to pull for characters no matter how meta they are if their designs can't attract their attention first
Goku, Ichigo, Luffy, Cloud, Barret, Tanjiro, Adult Naruto, Kenshiro, Guts, Broly (Dragon Ball Super) all don't have rainbow bubbly colors like the Genshin characters but they still have their primary colors that are different and make them stand out from others
Having half of your roster looking the same in a gacha game is the last thing you wanna do
Moving forward, one of the biggest hurdles for Kuro to overcome is adding the bare minimum color varieties in their characters and it's not like they can't do it. We've seen what they can do with guys like Jiyan, Danjin, Verina, etc. I think Kuro might know this themselves and they might start making the characters stand out from each other later on down the line

There is no problem is using muted colors, the problem is using the same color palette over such a huge percentage of characters. The issue with WuWa designs for me is that the white/black and their mid-tones are just that. Pure grey, pure black, pure white and no undertones. Same goes for their actual "accent" colors. They're just a solid, saturated and non-interesting primary color for the most part, making it all seem pretty boring.
Which is why characters like Encore and Verina stand out more, they have subtle shade differences and not just fully saturated, pure red or yellow as their only actual colors. They also have slightly different shades and hues in their design, not just one that turns a little bit darker in some places but is still overall the same color.
WuWa has a severe color pallette issue when overall their designs are pretty solid.

I think a GENUINE PROBLEM in the design of these characters is pandering. It is not equally done. Everything feels done FROM or FOR the male gaze, especially the exposure of female designs and restriction of male designs. Just compare female vs male rover-we all know who looks more interesting. The most skin exposure you have on the males is Mortefi’s unbuttoned shirt and Jiyan’s freakin armpit. They took away Scar’s interesting jumpsuit (I agree the onigiri strip was a bit distracting even tho I liked it) but now he is stuff covered neck to toe with a stupid button up shirt and boring cargo pants-like all. the. other. Men 🙃.
I’m fine with sex-appeal as long as it done equally. I’m loving withering waves but it is not being fair in this regard. I think female/queer gaze matters just as much as the males and they’d probably make more money if they pandered equally.

Asymmetrical designs are disturbing; when done excessively, for example look at how bad destiny 2 Warlock amor is; it really sucks
The only time asymmetrical design in excessive make sense, are things like spaceships, and torrents and some weapon like flame launchers vehicles; because the nature of them potentially has not only a design choice, but also a functional choice; what I mean excessive asymmetrical makes sense almost always on these things; with proper application still needed
functionality will greatly override athletics, trends, styles etc., simplicity, enhances comfortability, and tones and shade/light, greatly enhances the visual appeal. patterns well done greatly override texture resolution

disclaimer I never played the game, but from just visuals I think that WW's character design have quite some problem, expecially the color palette. Tooooooo much characters have large area of black, I know the world building is dark but making everything look black still....it makes the characters "feel" too similar by just visual. Second, most color palettes in WW makes me feel like there isn't a focus, I don't know how to explain this in short, I feel like the characters lack some primary attraction and isn't memorable, for me a good design should be like an apple between the leaves, but WW's give me the feeling of just a pile of leaves, they should “have something” that catch people's eyes in the first glance. Also as said in the video of the overly repeatability of color palette, these designs might look good independently, but when standing together they feel too similar. It's like the only color thay can think out of, excluding black white gold, are only red red, blue blue, and pink, the colors' variation isn't enough, your game just started and you already have four characters with red hair and black n white clothes.
Black IS the best balancing color to be use in designs, along with white, but WW's over using of large area of black annoys me. Also they don't use any contrasting colors to make things pop up (this might be a very personal opinion but I think the clash of well balanced contrasting colors are like sweet desserts, something like Navia (gold+blue) and Kuki (green+purple) from Genshin)
Okok I'm talking too much on colors, another problem I have with WW's design is the characters lack a "theme" for me, Encore have the best design in the game imo, her theme is sheep obviously, and a some don't have much problem, Verina's can be connected to nature, Lingyang is lion dance, Jianxin is YinYang, but then the other are just like "some sorta human" to me.
For now what I seen the only designs I think are good are the two lolis, maybe due to they are the only two with vibrant colors that makes them stand out the most lol.
(ps: these are all just my opinion, if you are into WW's designs it's nothing really wrong about it)
    (edit: corrected some sentences' arrangement)
