    The Dodge Durango shares the same chassis and platform as the Dodge Dakota. This is the best cheapest V8 you can buy.
    The Dodge Durango has the potential to be a great off roader.
    Watch to see if this is the right SUV or V8 for you!

      Another option as best overall buy was the steal i found last year. 2005 Suburban Z71 4x4 for just $2300. Runs and drives fine and 4x4 works with 19mpg. Crazy it gets better mpg than the smaller Durango. After finding that deal, i searched and found an 07 Yukon SLT 4x4 for just $2500 and bought it as well. Im still thinking about buying a 1st gen Durango just because. I want the 5.2 engine only.

    I bought a used 2001 Durango SLT with the 360 5.9 Engine 245 hp. It was only 4 years old , had 47,000 miles. It wasbin perfect condition. It had every option except the sun roof. I had it for 5 years , only minor maintenance items. Towed a small trailer about once a month. Great in the winter with the 4wd. Best SUV I've ever owned. I wish i would have kept it.

    I have an 02 4wd I bought 2 years ago. Gave $1500 at a used car lot with 175k. The only mechanical thing I’ve had to do was rebuild the clutch in the ac pump. It has the 4.7, the 4wd works great although it is the electronic on or off style. It is very peppy. I’m also 5’11” 295lbs and I’m comfortable driving it.
    3 things I do recommended for anyone getting one. Be religious on oil changes. The other is swap the TCM for one out of a jeep. The 4speed auto in the Durango is the same as the 5 in a jeep. I gained 4mpg and got better shift points with firmer shifts. And change out lifters (lash adjusters)on any 4.7 with over 150k. They are a common failure point in these motors.
    I’m so fond of my rig I’m working on a deal to get a 02 2wd 4.7 with a slight knock (I’m guessing lifter issue).

    I have had two early 318 V8 models Durango's. They were great - the 3rd row seat model was very functional. The best year was 2003 when Dodge put disk brakes on the rear. If you can find a southern truck with no rust - you can drop in a new engine and transmission and have a great truck.

    • @secondhandspeed
      @secondhandspeed  Před rokem +1

      This truck has been reliable and very useful. When the engine gives out I’d like to swap in a 6.2l V8 supercharge hellcat motor and tranny. Someone has done it with a Dakota so I don’t see why it won’t fit in this beast.

      Tbh, any other V8 you will find, is going to get very similar, one of the reasons they are trying to phase V8's out to meet the BS global gov "climate change" nonsense. Problem is the V6 and V4's with the turbo can't touch it, once you get up to speed or towing anything, the mpg shoots down less than the V8's. However, I might need some tuning to adjust the fuel usage, monitor the short / long term fuel trim on an OBD II, good chance something like a vacuum leak, fuel pressure regulator ect, is making it use more fuel that it needs.

    You're talking about the truck that I've been driving for a LONG time. Some upkeep to it, OK more than some, but anyhow, for a 23 old year old truck that still does it all in NY, it's fine. Mine has about 150k miles and again, being in NY, took some beating. But it's reliable, has a bit of an attitude, like its owner and i love driving it still. I wont go too-too far due to its age but I leave my newer vehicle covered in the drive and I go around town in this. A bit modified to match my likes, but again, i hope it lasts as long as i do....Around town, without a heavy foot, i get about 11 miles to a gallon on an average, with the same engine mentioned in the vid...Stay well all.

    • @secondhandspeed
      @secondhandspeed  Před rokem +1

      It had it when I bought it. I just replaced it with a new one since the old one was rusted. Power wise I can't really compare it to stock but you can definitely hear the intake as you accelerate. It helps it breath better for sure and I haven't had any issues with it but realistically you won't gain any major power. If you want to try it buy the cheapest one you can get. Don't buy a super expensive one like K&N. The one it had was a Spectra Brand but the one I replaced it with I found it at Ross for $6.

      handle just loose/swinging with nothing happening? If so, there is a metal latch that connects, the plastic connection tends to break over time, just grab pliers or the like, grip it and lift up. You can pull the whole thing out after that and address a fix for it.

      Buy 303 protectant online. It’s a white bottle with 303 circled in orange. This product was made to protect aircraft dashboards from the harsh sun.

      Use Marvel Mystery Oil in your gas and it will lubricant your valves & upper cylinders to prevent wear & tear and prevent future problems, it also cleans and keep the engine cool.

    I am thinking about buying a Durango I am just worried about reliability have you had any issues

    • @secondhandspeed
      @secondhandspeed  Před rokem

      I haven’t had any major issues yet. My current issues are burning oil due to old valve seals and tranny in 3rd gear due to shift solenoid. I’d check the oil and coolant. Make sure it shifts fine and look for any leaks and weird noises. It’s an old vehicle so it’s going to have some issues. But as long it had maintenance done it should be good. Good luck!

    So who honestly had the Durango 4.7 trouble free ? Anyone else claims the 4.7 magnum is garbage and transmissions are nightmares

    • @reddstool1023
      @reddstool1023 Před 2 měsíci

      4.7 is the worst engine. 5.2 is reliable but the 5.9 is what you want, very strong and reliable. Transmission is strong too, although it’s strange jeeps got the improved 5 speed while the Durango still had the 4 speed until production ended.

      @@reddstool1023 Not sure what you are talking about but I have the 4.7 and its a strong reliable motor and other people I know who had that motor before never had issues. The garbage motors were the hemis in the later gens.

    3:54 - Did you say "churrokeys"? 😂 It's "chair o key," and that paeticular image was a Grand Chair-o-key. The churrokey never came with a V8.
