Xiaomi - Pocket Photo printer - Full Walkthrough Review [Xiaomify]

The Xiaomi pocket photo printer uses a thermal-Zink printing technique, which is an ink-less printing technique meaning it has no cartridges. It has an internal 500 mAh battery so you don't need to replace batteries or use it wired. It prints 2 x 3-inch photos, which is a standard type of photo size. (You could probably use it with similar photo paper from other brands but Xiaomi sells these 'consumables' in packs of 20 photos.)
You use the photo printer with Xiaomi's Mi Home APP. Note that you can only add the photo printer when the APP is set to use the China Mainland server from the settings. (Despite what some people say; I AM switching between EU- and CN-servers without losing my connected devices on either of those servers actually...)
Once the printer is connected over Bluetooth with the Mi Home APP you can print photos from your phone. It will allow you to add some small adjustments and add a bunch of photo filters before printing.
The photos come out, well, alright.
The 313 x 400dpi print resolution is not the highest resolution photo like you would get with a higher-end photo printer though. I noticed that, especially with hues of blue, the color does come out a bit different than you would have on-screen and it seems to perform best with photos that have high contrast.
A cool thing is that the photos actually have an adhesive backside so you could stick them onto anything. It's quite a strong sticker.
It also has an AR function which allows you to print a still image from a video, or an image that you set to be associated with that video. When using the AR-scanner in the APP you can then make that photo come to life like it is an actual video playing on your table. You could additionally also associate an audio file with a photo so it will play that sound when scanning the photo. -It is kinda fun, but also not really all that useful.
I have been using it for several months and there are a few things that I have found. I find the photos to not be the best quality you can imagine, but I also find that this is not its main purpose. Its main purpose (in my opinion) is to easily print snapshots whilst on a holiday or at a party.
If your expectations of the actual print quality is not that of a high-res photo printer then it is a fun gadget to bring along.

I think AR photos are a cool feature not for yourself but others. I imagine sending a birthday card with a photo that’s actually a small video
Sadly it's only possible with the app, and u can only use the printer app if u actually have the device :/

@@IvanMaksimov What about it? The way Xiaomi did it works without a glaring QR code. The downside is that you have to use the app, which isn't that much of a downer in China itself, because Xiaomi is SUPER widespread there and even in the west Xiaomi devices are common as hell, but the issue is that you ought to use China Mainland servers which is a no-go for me.
Basically, if Samsung or another company I'm willing to trust a little more made this and the app needed for it was common enough or even better yet if it was an open standard then this could be super lovely.
As it is, it's a bit hard to find the utility for it in the Western part of the world.

I am SOOOO obsessed with mine. Photos are not perfect or precise like they are in your phone gallery album so don't expect them to come out looking exactly like that BUT !! they are pretty good and decent photos. It doesn't really matter anyway you have the original photos in your gallery/storage so if you wanted to you could always look back on them. I like this printer because it's cheap and so are the photo papers and I also love the fact that it has an AR feature to scan your photo and you can watch your 15 second video. It's soooo fricken COOL !! And not only that but if you want to put it into your gratitude book like I do then you can simply peel that back off and it sticks to the page so no need to buy glue or tape to stick the photo into the book. I'm 1000% satisfied that I purchased this, it was worth my money and didn't break the bank either
how long does the ink last?
@@archanaratnalingam6407 it doesn't need ink to print. I'm not 100% sure what it uses but you don't need any ink for it, just the "xiaomi mi photo printer paper" and the device itself and that's it.

Maybe I'm missing something - leaving aside the quite reasonable concerns about Xaiomi App storage location, security, etc, the AR feature discussed at 3:08 would appear to be excellent as a journal feature.
I take a video of a memorable event (a wedding, baby's first steps, graduation, a travel experience). I select a still from it to print. I put the sticker in my journal. I add my written notes.
At any time in the future (before the image fades ...), I open my journal, open my Xaiomi app, and as I'm reading my journal, I have indexed videos on demand (as opposed to potentially hours of wasted time trying to locate specific videos).
Isn't that what would have made sense to demo here? Isn't that reasonably described as "AR printed photo"?

That's exactly the pont of the feature, you're not missing anything. The only down side is that only the person who took the picture can scan the AR videos, using his/her mi Home account, so it's still impossible to share those moments with friends or family, for example.

No
It's the same zink technology, so it should work. On matter of improving the picture, I don´t count on it, because it's a common problem between zink printers (saturation and everything). But the ones I use from polaroid, are waterproof, so in that it may be better.

As much as I have read online, all brands are compatible as long as you swap the "calibration sheet" (the orange paper) so you trick the printer to think you're using the paper from the brand. So, if you're planning on using other brands, just save the calibration sheet from the print paper that came with the camera.

Hi, I bought it today and tried to print, it always saying Job is not printed. I've tried everything, is not working. I thought maybe because I didn't put the orange paper with papers at first, I've tried with it as well. I have no idea.
I got one and printed a picture of me and my SO with a voice record.. Yet, she can't play it on her phone through the app w/out connecting with the printer first.. Help please

@@bryan25cool the paper which is used in such pocket printer coated with chemical color ink itself.Printer doesn't have any ink cartridge,paper have special ink coating.Printer only burn it as per data instructions
The paper for portable photo printers is still cheaper than paper for instant camera. And the advantage is that you can choose photos for printing and edit them before you print them. That's why it's a better choice than instant camera.
Hello. Will the photos fade eventually like thermal prints? And would you be able to view the AR on the app even if you don't have the printer? Like I want to give an AR photo to someone who doesn't have the printer, can the person view the AR video on her phone if he/she has the app? Thank you.
