- Today, I will be showing you guys how to install a new dimmer switch for a single-pole configuration or a 3-way configuration. I’ll be using the Lutron AYCL-153P-WH dimmer switch. This switch comes with a wire nut included in the box so all you need for this project is a screwdriver and a noncontact voltage tester/multimeter. This DIY project only took me about 10 minutes to complete! Good luck! You'll nail it!
Hey guys my name is Blake also known as Nailed it here on CZcams and I make videos about DIY projects. I hope you guys enjoy the video and let me know if you have any questions about it in the comments and I will do my best to answer them. I hope you learned something today and saved some money in the meantime. Also, don't forget to nail that like button for the CZcams algorithm! ;)
This is a new channel but more content will be coming soon! If you have any video suggestions please leave them in the comments!

WOW - that is so simple, you show everything without adding lots of complicated information. Awesome job!!
I've seen dozens of these diy simple electoral how t vids, but none of them explained "single pole n 3 way. Thank you 😊
Best dimmer switch video on the web! Only person that mentions “don’t worry about what side you put the black wires on” thank you for the video
Great video, straight to the point, not too wordy and no complicated explanation.
Really thorough yet to the point! Definitely nailed it!
This is the best, most straight forward video on single vs 3 pole dimmer switch installation I have found so far and I've spent a good hour looking for one that explained everything even the bending of the wall plate. Thank you!
Wow thank you! I’m glad it helped! Thanks for watching!

Simple and clear lesson.Well done 👍 Thank you!
Best how to vid for this switch I have found. Awesome
Wow, thanks!
Wow thank you, I need this explanation to get started on my 3 way dimmer switch.
Great presentation
Thank you 👌🏻 great video
Thank you!!
You can adjust the range of the dimmer with that blue dial under the switch cover. No need to cut power, since you will stay outside of where the wires are.
Thank you for your instruction was awesome. Once we saw your video it only took 5 minutes to put together. The instruction and the video that came with the product was a joke could not understand what they were saying and was skipping steps. Lutron should use your video for the video for there company.
Thanks!!
Hey I have no idea why the views are so low on this video... its GREAT. A lot of videos for this process have thousands of views and it's super hard to see where they're putting the wires (and the colors are all over the place). Hopefully you keep this up the pictures we're a DIY savior here. And the detailed explanations really helped
Wow thank you for your comment! I really really appreciate that! I’m glad the video helped explain the process!
@@BlakeHQ I'm looking at the light right now! Worked great
I've purchased a new Lutron Diva 8-Amp 0 to 10-Volt 3-Way/Single-Pole Dimmer - and plan to run 5 LED fixtures, operated from a single light switch. The dimmer switch itself has 5 wires (wht/blk/green - self explanitory) and also 2 small wires which I assume are low voltage for dimming. The home has standard 14-2 Romex wiring to the switch box. Not sure what to do with the 2 small wires.
I did it yesterday, without not seeing any video, anyway, good video
Nice work!
Question! I don’t have a red wire on one of my switches PORT when I remove it from one side. Does the dimmer go on that one or is that for the ON/OFF switch?
I have two black wires, a red and the copper. Following your video for single pole and connecting the two black wires, what do I do with the red wire?
Three-way Leviton 6674-P0W install checking in. If you’re certain of your wiring but your switch works backwards, you most likely need to swap your traveler wires over.
Set of led light were ocassionally flickering. I was told it might be the switch. When I started to pull the old switch it had never been grounded. I grounded it and reinstalled it. No flickering so far. Do you think this may have solved my problem. Flickering would come and go so I don’t know for sure yet.
Great video. I have a complicated situation. Im trying to install a dimmer switch. But there is no ground wire im the junction box. What do I do? And also the switch im replacing has another switch right next to it but the black wire is connected to both switches! Idk what to do?
The ground wire is not necessary! A lot of older houses usually don’t have a ground! All it does is make the circuit safer so if you can add it great but if not it will still work just fine!
The black wire is the “hot” wire. In order to switch the light on and off, you’ll need to “ interrupt” the circuit with the switch! That’s why it is most likely connected to both back wires!
Is the second switch working still? If it’s working it should be fine and you won’t need to replace it? Let me know! I’ll try to help the best I can!
What is the blue thing on the front of switch do?
Now I know! Great tutorial. Well delivered. BTW, what program do you use for all those graphics?
Thanks! I use Canva for most of my graphics!
@@BlakeHQ I use canva for thumbnails but I didn’t know it could do graphics in my videos. I’ll have to dig deeper and learn how to do it. Thanks!
Yeah you can make just about any type of drawing you want. Then I just move it around with my editing software! For example my breaker panel was made using canva!
@@BlakeHQ Very Cool. I'm going to use it in the future, I watched a tutorial on CZcams, definitely going to look into it more
Yeah do it! If you have any questions about it let me know!
Quick question! Can you use a 3 way dimmer switch to replace a single pole light switch? What to do with the extra red wire?
Yes you should be able too, I’ve never done it before but I don’t see a problem with it. You would just put a wire nut on the unused wire! Hope that helps!
Can this dimmer be used in line on something like a lava lamp?
Question: does this light switch have an orange glow to locate it in a dark room (i.e., is it an illuminated switch)?
No it is not!
So, I have two red wires, and two white wires and no indication which one is the common wire - house was built in 1994. Any tips on wiring this?
Might want to use a different dimmer switch with less wires.
My 3-way switch has black, blue, and white wire. It woulld be better to explain what the wires are for (incoming power, switch interconnection, and lamp) rather than just colors.
Not understanding isn’t single pole wiring usually a 14/2 3 wires total including ground usually black white and Copper ?
Single pole means you can only turn on/off the light from one location in the room. 3 way means you can turn on/off the light from multiple locations meaning you have more than one switch that turns on and off the same light! Hope that helps!
What if you only have white, black and ground. How do you hook that up?
The white will stay with the other whites, the ground will connect to the switch and you should have two blacks. They both should go to the switch!
Check out this diagram!

What if i have one black wire & one white wire?
Just break the ears off of the switch for the rocking. Didn’t have to cut any dry wall
Good point!
I still have 0 idea how to put 12 gage wiring to this. The wire is to fat to loop around the screw. On top of thr holes are way to small. Does this switch work with 12/3 wiring?
It should!
If not, you could get a small connector that reduces the size
Thankyou I was finally able to figure it out! Took some finesse lol. The screw which the red wire goes to. Is so close to the side it was hard to loop around it.
NUETRALS WIRED TOGETHER!!!!!
Bro you got to have them screws going up and down on cover plate.
Lol I will do that next time just for you!
DON'T use the quick connect holes!! Always use the screws for a more secure connection :)
You didn’t even discuss the blue rotating switch inside?!
What if I don't have a red wire?
You’ll need a “3way” switch!
Don't back stab your wires, those don't hold
That's not a dimmer switch
Wth ? Too much unnecessary stuff.
