I’d LOVE to see what happens to Truman after he exits the set, but that’s the whole point. He’s not on display anymore. AMAZING MOVIE!!!
In reality he'd have a breakdown. He wouldn't be able to cope with real life. Bills, the threat of repossession or debts if he didn't make his sales, targets, crime, war.....
yea and if you think about it, if the movie continued on any further it would turn into a horror film, because that would mean he could never escape it 😵💫
He'd probably fall into depression not being able to accept the world for what it is, eventually leading to suicide :( It's probably good that the movie ended the way it did...
Sorry but Truman is an idiot. He could have lived a stress free life with a pretty woman instead of wondering into unknown.
@@azazello1784 i don't think you watched the same movie as us because truman was insanely stressed throughout the whole movie and the woman he was married to didn't even like him she liked his friend lol
"Don't tell me! He's the only..."
Yes, "Truman" is the only "True man" on the show.
That's really clever, I never noticed that detail
Fingers-crossed has two different meanings. There is that of being hopeful something will go right. And the other, which is the one used in this film, is someone having their fingers crossed (usually behind their back), which means they are lying or don't mean what they're agreeing to.
Apparently it's to ward off punishment from gods or karma for lying. As far as I'm aware it's effectiveness hasn't been tested but I'm not placing my bets on it 😁
This movie came out prior to the big wave of reality shows and was at the very beginning of the internets ability to “stream” content. Its eerily fascinating how well it stands on its own nearly 25 years later. This is one of my favorite Jim Carey roles. He knew the scope of the project and you can tell he wasnt mailing it in as a paycheck.
The facts that this movie was so early in the reality TV wave and also that most people knew the premise of this film going in and didn’t have to spend time trying to figure it out are two unfortunate issues you see over and over with reactions to this particular film…nature of the genre, I suppose.
The amazing thing is, coming out in 1998, The Truman Show pre-dates most of social media and most Reality TV shows.
I'm just now realizing that if the studio has had truman since he was born, they may have named him truman as a play on the words "true man" because that's what they wanted to capture with all this I think. the true real life of an average everyday man from start to finish.
To think that this film came out in 1998, before reality shows and social media really took off. Jim Carey really was brilliant in it, with a perfect mix of straight and comedy acting.
I watched this in theaters when it came out. The applause when Truman left the stage is something I'll never forget. Even back then I found the concept horrifying. Fast forward to today and yikes. This movie is fantastic. Your reaction was amazing as always. Watching your mind trying to work out what was happening almost mirrors my own when I first saw it.
Thank you luv
Just shows how dumb people are. Truman should have stayed in the show. It's easy stress free life with a pretty wife.
I think this is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. Really shows how good of an actor he is.
This is a movie, like Groundhog Day, that goes much deeper than its roots. They hold up a mirror to our society and force us to look at ourselves in a comic but critical way. This film becomes greater with each passing year.
Cross your fingers openly generally means you're hopeful. But crossing your fingers while making a promise means you're lying.
The director's name Christof is deliberate, he's playing Christ. He's playing God with Truman's life; during the finale he literally talks to him through clouds, he decides when there is light, he calls storms and decides when his 'creation' lives or dies. And the way he talks to and about Truman like he's a parent to a child. Beside the more obvious commentary about society and reality shows and social media(which is still amazing and even more poignant 24 years later!), there is also a strong religious undertone and critique in this movie about believing false gods and never questioning the reality around you, blindly following the rules somebody set and suppressing your own curiousity, your own empathy and humanity because everyone else does the same.
And Truman was true man.
Your reaction to him bowing at the end was everything I wanted and so much more! So happy you appreciated that moment and I love how you said “he served you with his life” 👏🏼
And Jim Carrey truly is an absolute genius on levels we can’t even comprehend ✨ thankful to be alive at the same time in the Universe as him
Another more dramatic role from Jim is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Highly recommend it. This one and Eternal Sunshine are my favourite Jim Carey films. Thank you for the upload!
totally agree
Now you need to watch it again, now that you know what is happening with Truman.
I'm pretty sure that all the actors who interacted with Truman had to sign a NDA, so they would be sued if they told him the truth. I'm guessing that Silvia was just a background player who caught Truman's eye; she knew she was going to be kicked off the set - she wasn't hired to be his love interest, and was messing up the plans.
Very interesting thoughts at the end. Glad it was added. It's almost like in the Truman Show universe the people are stuck to their screens in the same way Truman was stuck in his world. That's why when he got out everyone cheered because it was like them coming unstuck. Such an amazing film and film reaction ❤
Maybe the best Jim Carrey performance IMO, can't wait to see your reaction to this one 👍
I hope you enjoy it again with me ❤
I prefer Eternal Sunshine and The Majestic is great too, but those are probably his top 3, when he decided to be an actor, comic or dramatic, rather than just a comedian. I got into his early stuff, but then Liar Liar made me believe he might actually be able to play a real person.
One of my all time favourite films. It's incredible. You go through all the emotions. I cheered and cried when he delivered his last line
The camera in his ring that he wore that his father gave him before he died, he gave back to his father after he returned to the show. So from that point they couldn't absolutely track his movements. Which ultimately helped him escape.
In addition to reality tv, we can also draw comparison to influencers today, that are sharing their entire life. And not only their own, but when they have kids, their kids life as well. I think about Christophs comment 'We accept the world as it's presented to us'. Kids of influencers accept it as normal, sharing their ups and downs, their reactions to things. The parents and kids might say that the kids choose, that the kids are aware of what they are doing, but I don't think they are. The mind isn't developed properly till mid 20s. So how can we say that kids choose that?
VERY TRUE
The finger crossing in the photo meant she was lying.
It's usually a kid thing...when you answer something with a lie (in this case, the wedding/vows) you cross your fingers.
I'm geniuenly super hyped for this.
This is my favourite reaction that you've ever done. Your sheer investment in the movie made it so much fun to watch!
This movie was way ahead of its time. It holds up incredibly well. Almost frighteningly well, given the reality shows nowadays.
Fingers crossed can mean hopeful, but it can also mean untruthful... In this instance, his actor-wife was crossing her fingers to the promise of marriage. She wasn't being honest or true in her intentions to Truman.
This came out in 1998, and I believe the first big "reality show" (Survivor) aired on TV in 1999. So this movie was prophetic.
We had had "The Real World-(thanks @ThrottleVinnieModo, @fullmoonprepping, @hephner78)" on MTv. Plus there were reality shows in Europe
@@losdesmayosdeNestor and Road Rules on MTV as well, there were several "reality" shows before Survivor, Big Brother was way before survivor, to answer your ? KSO Jim Carey's char does NOT know he is in a reality show
@@losdesmayosdeNestor *The Real World
Actually survivor originated in Swedish television allready in 1997, under the name exspedition Robinson.
@@losdesmayosdeNestor The Real World
This is one of the best films to ever come out and a display of Jim Carrey’s amazing versatility in acting. Most know him as a comedy actor, and while he’s well respected and loved for being absolutely hilarious he’s done a few really amazing dramatic movies that show he CAN act his ass off when he believes in a role. He really made Truman an eerily realistic character, and sometimes you forget this is an actual movie and you feel as if your watching the Truman show, watching him suffer as he slowly starts to figure out on camera that his entire life- even his WIFE is a lie.
I had nightmares for weeks after seeing this movie, not because it had any horror elements- but because it felt like a really real scenario. I would dream about being stuck in places where I knew something was off and wrong about everything around me, but everyone acted as if I were crazy or mentally ill. It’s worse than any horror film I’ve ever watched ( in a good way, of course), and Jim just nails every aspect of his character perfectly.
I completely understand - Jim was excellent in this - its a scary reality/what-if
philip glass did a great job on the music in this. "Truman Sleeps" and "Dreaming of Fiji" are beautiful.
It was so much fun to watch you react to this movie. One of my favorite movies of all time.
When I first saw this with friends years ago, (We rented it), as soon as it was done we started from the beginning and watched it all over again to really get the entire concept. So brilliant. So well done.
I appreciate that you take time to think about these movies in retrospect.
"maybe we should save for a few months" that was so clever because they'll need a few months to build a new set, a Fiji set.
Such a great film! The thing I love the most is the attention to detail. You can see cameras all over the place if you look carefully.
My favourite thing about this film is how there’s a piece of music playing while Truman is sleeping composed by Philip Glass (I’m a huge fan of his!), and he’s actually there in the scenes background performing it in the studio himself.
I absolutely love this movie!!!! I’ve watched it an embarrassing amount of times😳❤️❤️❤️
The problem with this show is that there is only 10,000 episodes and it was abruptly cancelled.
I have to say, this is one of the best movies i have ever seen. Wonderful reaction hunni, I loved how you approached this and how you reacted as the movie went on xxx
Jim Carrey at his finest. I loved this film, but I found it incredibly sad when the truth was revealed. The ending was great, imo, leaving it to our imagination as to what happens next.
I recommended this movie a long time ago, and it was wonderful to see you watch it. I'm not surprised it had such an impact on you. I saw this in the cinema, knowing nothing about it, and when I walked out, I was in such a daze I was almost hit by a car. Thanks for another great reaction.
Crossing your fingers while making a promise is saying it's not a sincere promise, like when his wife had her fingers crossed in their wedding picture.
I was so excited when I saw you were reacting to this! I knew it would stress you out and blow you away. I wasn't disappointed 😁❤️
There was no reality TV when this movie came out. Camera phones were in infancy. That makes it even more wow.
this movie is such a classic, really taps into an obscure fear I think most people in the modern world has
This movie came out BEFORE reality TV was a thing.
There is a famous science fiction short story about people who sold 24/7 access to their lives (life loops). I can't remember who wrote it but it is a forerunner of the reality show idea from many decades ago
Your reaction to this movie is the best reaction I’ve ever seen. Observant, honest, thoughtful… thank you for sharing your commentary with us! Its truly great to watch.
this is really one of the greatest movies of all time. i love watching peoples' first reaction to it, trying to piece it together haha. and the emotional depth in it is unlike any other, i still cry every time i watch it even though i already know what's going to happen.
First viewing -- is the puzzle. Second viewing -- you spot all the hidden cameras! (And they're everywhere.)
Jim Carrey really surprised me with this one and also Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I grew up watching his comedy movies and only got to watch these 2 as a teen, his performance stuck with me
Great reaction!!
I've seen the movie at least 12 times. But I have to cry every time he hits the wall of clouds in desperation....
It really is astonishing how predictive this movie was! In prior years, there were of course documentaries about people's current lives, but not in the "follow them around 24-7" way we have now. The barrage of "reality tv" as we know it now was born in the years following The Truman Show. (There was a writers' strike, and rather than work things out with the writers, execs decided to flood us all with "unscripted" shows.) I was finishing college when this movie came out, before the internet was ubiquitous and certainly before social media. (We had blogs and forums but generally people did not reveal themselves -- absolutely you never gave out your real name! Your parents and your BOSS of all people were not privy to your online life.) I had a really interesting conversation a couple years ago with someone about 20 years younger than me about this movie, largely about how much the concept of privacy has changed. The kids today have my sympathy.
Great reaction to this! I saw this in the theatre. I think 'most everybody had an idea of the premise back then, but it was just fascinating watching you have to figure it all out. I kind of wish I could see it like that.
I just realized that Truman means "True Man." The only real part of this show!
If you want to see another serious role from Jim Carrey, try The Majestic. It is so rarely talked about, but it's a really good movie! Great reaction, it was fun to see you trying to piece together what was going on. ~Caroline
This is the third of your react vids I've watched tonight. The other two were "Misery" and "Dumb & Dumber". All superb. Cheers from Ireland
Truman Show and Cable Guy are my 2 favorite Jim Carrey movies. I didn't realize until now they both have the same theme of watching tv shows and movies. Carrey was also great in The Majestic, another movie theme, and the first time I saw Jim play a serious role. I also recommend a movie called "Videodrome"
I only just recently found your channel and now I’m binging your reactions. Your responses to all of these films has been filling my heart with joy, and this one especially!
Wow, thank you!
About Truman and Sylvia meeting: she lives right outside the set, we know that she is in Hollywood because of when she calls the TruTalk show, and we know the set is in Hollywood because we can see the Hollywood sign next to it. She probably lives as close as possible to the set. She is last seen running down the stairs and out the door, throwing on her coat as she runs. We know she’ll find him very quickly.
Now imagine she takes him back to her apartment. Really look at her apartment, pause the video and look closely at her living space. Now imagine Truman walking into that room. 🥲🥲🥲💗
For example, she has bumper stickers “Say NO to the Truman Show”, posters about protests, and check out her bulletin board, with photos of different actors in the show and little yellow sticky notes on each one with details about repeated attempts to recruit them to the cause. The “TRUMAN YOU’RE ON TV” sign, etc.
There’s obviously an organized resistance that has been working to liberate Truman for many years. It’s almost certainly that resistance who were responsible for the “accidents” that caused Truman to realize something was wrong. The set light falling (the light was for a star, the label was the name of the star), that targeted rain shower, the thing with the radio, and his “father” appearing-these are acts of sabotage by people who have been infiltrating the show/set for a long time.
All those “accidents” happening in such quick succession had to have been an organized sabotage campaign.
I think this movie is as much about Sylvia and the off-screen members of the resistance who worked hard for years to achieve Truman’s liberation. ❤️
"23" is another film where Carrey shines as a serious actor.
"This is all a movie set....and he's the only...human" 😂
I don't know if I ever noticed, the waitresses watching the show have aprons that say "Truman Bar".
When you said "doggy... " lol sooo cute
You have to watch Jim Carey I'm the Majestic. One of his best acting!
If you ever get the chance to go to this town, where it was filmed, in Florida, do it! It looks just like it yet. We also found the house that is Truman's in the movie. Also, great reaction as usual! 😊
We live in our own Truman Show now.. With apps like Tik Tok, Instagram, etc. Sometimes we just need a day to unplug from the internet
18:51 LMAO when SCENE'crly, K. S. O. finds out how crazy this set-up actually is.
Best way I heard someone describe this movie, “their acting with someone’s life “
your gradual acknowledgement about the movie was exciting to watch ☺☺
Lol, K.S.O: "it looks like we are looking at him through a lens!", "OH! Its a movie!"
Those that don't know the film: umm, yeah! Kind of what you do!
"He's a Kardashian!" I think Jim Carrey just killed himself..😂😂
When Meredith crossed her fingers in the wedding photo, was to imply that she really was not marrying him for real. Fingers crossed in this context behind ones back or hidden is when a person does not want to honor a promise.
This is my favorite movie by Jim Carrey. Thanks K.S.O 👍
the crossed fingers in that context dont mean "hopeful", it basically means "it doesnt count", like when you make a promise but cross your fingers behind your back
19:13 did you notice the travel agent still had her bib on that they put on actors when they're getting makeup put on? I love little details like that.
Yes I did. lol - thought it was so funny
The Ultimate Reality Show. Its the Truman Show!
After finishing the movie, you gotta watch the first 5 minutes again.
I’m so glad you came back for a second thought. It was an amazingly horrifying movie. I saw it in my early 20’s a few months after it was released at blockbuster. I thought how so messed up it was with many people who were obsessed with the show and how only one person ever tried to help him. You’re right, the obsession of entertainment is real. I took a break from working for 8 years and when I went back in 2022, there was not one person that did check there phone every few minutes and scrolled during every break or down time. They were addicted. 100%. It is sooooo scary! 💙💙💙
This film was partly inspired by a college girl named Jennifer Ringley who set up web cams all over her apartment that were running 24-7, showing everything she did from making breakfast to sleeping to more "naughty" things. There was no streaming video back then but her website, JenniCam, was updated with still photos once per minute if I recall so you could just keep reloading the page to see what she was doing. The big difference was that she knew the cameras were there, Truman doesn't.
The moment I saw you had reacted to this movie I knew it was going to be a really good one. It didn't disappoint. The fact that there's a psychological condition (not official) named Truman Show Syndrome says a lot about what impact this movie has had on society. Also, it's ironic that we're watching you watching the audience watch Truman. If Jim Carrey was watching us it would come full circle. :P
It is so much fun watching you figuring this out
This is on my list of the saddest movies of all time. It legitimately messed up my life for a long time as a child. It reinforced nightmares I had as a child.
Yes! Love that you reacted to this. Ty for your reaction and thoughts, gorgeous.
Man its a long time ago that i watchted this masterpiece
Excellent, excellent reaction. Thank you.
Actually “fingers crossed” here means a lie, whenever you promise someone something but cross your fingers it means you’re going to break that promise. With the promise in the photo being marriage, Meryl was basically saying “this marriage isn’t real I’m just doing it for my job”
Crossing fingers is a way to say u don’t mean a promise
Brilliant reaction and insight! Thank you for this. If you haven't seen it yet, please react to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with Jim Carrey. Much love to you....
A masterclass in manipulation for the benefit of others. Very good movie. I actually saw it in the theaters and really liked the music in the 'awakening scene'
"EdTV", Another movie released around the same time explored similar themes.
"He's a Kardashian!!" lol
i remember when i was a kid the fingers crossed had two meanings, and i think both are used in the film. it was like a magic sign you could do when you lie, to prevent from getting caught in the lie. and then also it was like a good luck sign.
This is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. Another good Jim Carrey movie is “Number 23” you should watch. 😁
I´m hungry to see Borat 2 reaction! Nice day for everyone.
14:02 I was WAITING for the moment that you discovered what was happening!
First off, Hufflepuff represent! :D Second off, this is the role that really made me respect Jim Carey. I'd always known him as a comedian, though his usual brand of humor wasn't always my cup of tea. This role was when I started seeing his real range as an actor, and made me a fan of his.
Almost all the greatest dramatic actors started in comedy
the Majestic with Jim Carrey is a good one
I love this movie which surprises me. I’m not a fan of Jim Carey and I do not find him funny. But I’m this movie he kills it. I like others would want one more scene. But it’s about him having his choice.
Jim Carey won a Golden Globe for his performance. I think Ed Harris was nominated for an Oscar.
Hello. If You’re on a path with the incredible acting versatility of Jim Carrey I recommend or suggest a patreon to propose Man on the moon or Eternal sunshine … Tremendous performances ! I wish you the best ❤
I sincerely believe if this movie was never made, some hollywood executive would have absolutely pitched this idea. Sad thing is, it probably wouldve been greenlighted.
I love your view on it. How the Truman Show is our phone, our entertainment. How detached we have become to reality and that we need to unplug sometimes and _live._
very true - we need to unplug
Jim Carey was amazing in this, if it were made ten years earlier, it would almost certainly have been Tom Hanks, lol for some reason he just seems to fit the role too in my mind.
It very much is Tom Hanks sort of movie but I'm glad its jim Carey
"everyman" quality
"I wanted to see him meet the girl" - That's his life now. Not for us to see ;)
Just as I said
Your confusion is hilarious, actually funnier than the movie.
We are all in a Truman show
Here's me watching you: "Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes! Yes! Yes! You got it! Yes! Yes! Correct! Yes!! Yes!! You got it yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!!!😀"
GREAT AS USUAL!!!!
