Fingers-crossed has two different meanings. There is that of being hopeful something will go right. And the other, which is the one used in this film, is someone having their fingers crossed (usually behind their back), which means they are lying or don't mean what they're agreeing to.

This movie came out prior to the big wave of reality shows and was at the very beginning of the internets ability to “stream” content. Its eerily fascinating how well it stands on its own nearly 25 years later. This is one of my favorite Jim Carey roles. He knew the scope of the project and you can tell he wasnt mailing it in as a paycheck.

The facts that this movie was so early in the reality TV wave and also that most people knew the premise of this film going in and didn’t have to spend time trying to figure it out are two unfortunate issues you see over and over with reactions to this particular film…nature of the genre, I suppose.

I'm just now realizing that if the studio has had truman since he was born, they may have named him truman as a play on the words "true man" because that's what they wanted to capture with all this I think. the true real life of an average everyday man from start to finish.

The director's name Christof is deliberate, he's playing Christ. He's playing God with Truman's life; during the finale he literally talks to him through clouds, he decides when there is light, he calls storms and decides when his 'creation' lives or dies. And the way he talks to and about Truman like he's a parent to a child. Beside the more obvious commentary about society and reality shows and social media(which is still amazing and even more poignant 24 years later!), there is also a strong religious undertone and critique in this movie about believing false gods and never questioning the reality around you, blindly following the rules somebody set and suppressing your own curiousity, your own empathy and humanity because everyone else does the same.

Now you need to watch it again, now that you know what is happening with Truman.
I'm pretty sure that all the actors who interacted with Truman had to sign a NDA, so they would be sued if they told him the truth. I'm guessing that Silvia was just a background player who caught Truman's eye; she knew she was going to be kicked off the set - she wasn't hired to be his love interest, and was messing up the plans.

In addition to reality tv, we can also draw comparison to influencers today, that are sharing their entire life. And not only their own, but when they have kids, their kids life as well. I think about Christophs comment 'We accept the world as it's presented to us'. Kids of influencers accept it as normal, sharing their ups and downs, their reactions to things. The parents and kids might say that the kids choose, that the kids are aware of what they are doing, but I don't think they are. The mind isn't developed properly till mid 20s. So how can we say that kids choose that?

This is one of the best films to ever come out and a display of Jim Carrey’s amazing versatility in acting. Most know him as a comedy actor, and while he’s well respected and loved for being absolutely hilarious he’s done a few really amazing dramatic movies that show he CAN act his ass off when he believes in a role. He really made Truman an eerily realistic character, and sometimes you forget this is an actual movie and you feel as if your watching the Truman show, watching him suffer as he slowly starts to figure out on camera that his entire life- even his WIFE is a lie.
I had nightmares for weeks after seeing this movie, not because it had any horror elements- but because it felt like a really real scenario. I would dream about being stuck in places where I knew something was off and wrong about everything around me, but everyone acted as if I were crazy or mentally ill. It’s worse than any horror film I’ve ever watched ( in a good way, of course), and Jim just nails every aspect of his character perfectly.

It really is astonishing how predictive this movie was! In prior years, there were of course documentaries about people's current lives, but not in the "follow them around 24-7" way we have now. The barrage of "reality tv" as we know it now was born in the years following The Truman Show. (There was a writers' strike, and rather than work things out with the writers, execs decided to flood us all with "unscripted" shows.) I was finishing college when this movie came out, before the internet was ubiquitous and certainly before social media. (We had blogs and forums but generally people did not reveal themselves -- absolutely you never gave out your real name! Your parents and your BOSS of all people were not privy to your online life.) I had a really interesting conversation a couple years ago with someone about 20 years younger than me about this movie, largely about how much the concept of privacy has changed. The kids today have my sympathy.

About Truman and Sylvia meeting: she lives right outside the set, we know that she is in Hollywood because of when she calls the TruTalk show, and we know the set is in Hollywood because we can see the Hollywood sign next to it. She probably lives as close as possible to the set. She is last seen running down the stairs and out the door, throwing on her coat as she runs. We know she’ll find him very quickly.
Now imagine she takes him back to her apartment. Really look at her apartment, pause the video and look closely at her living space. Now imagine Truman walking into that room. 🥲🥲🥲💗

    • @tamarleigh
      @tamarleigh Před rokem

For example, she has bumper stickers “Say NO to the Truman Show”, posters about protests, and check out her bulletin board, with photos of different actors in the show and little yellow sticky notes on each one with details about repeated attempts to recruit them to the cause. The “TRUMAN YOU’RE ON TV” sign, etc.
There’s obviously an organized resistance that has been working to liberate Truman for many years. It’s almost certainly that resistance who were responsible for the “accidents” that caused Truman to realize something was wrong. The set light falling (the light was for a star, the label was the name of the star), that targeted rain shower, the thing with the radio, and his “father” appearing-these are acts of sabotage by people who have been infiltrating the show/set for a long time.
All those “accidents” happening in such quick succession had to have been an organized sabotage campaign.
I think this movie is as much about Sylvia and the off-screen members of the resistance who worked hard for years to achieve Truman’s liberation. ❤️

the crossed fingers in that context dont mean "hopeful", it basically means "it doesnt count", like when you make a promise but cross your fingers behind your back

I’m so glad you came back for a second thought. It was an amazingly horrifying movie. I saw it in my early 20’s a few months after it was released at blockbuster. I thought how so messed up it was with many people who were obsessed with the show and how only one person ever tried to help him. You’re right, the obsession of entertainment is real. I took a break from working for 8 years and when I went back in 2022, there was not one person that did check there phone every few minutes and scrolled during every break or down time. They were addicted. 100%. It is sooooo scary! 💙💙💙

This film was partly inspired by a college girl named Jennifer Ringley who set up web cams all over her apartment that were running 24-7, showing everything she did from making breakfast to sleeping to more "naughty" things. There was no streaming video back then but her website, JenniCam, was updated with still photos once per minute if I recall so you could just keep reloading the page to see what she was doing. The big difference was that she knew the cameras were there, Truman doesn't.

The moment I saw you had reacted to this movie I knew it was going to be a really good one. It didn't disappoint. The fact that there's a psychological condition (not official) named Truman Show Syndrome says a lot about what impact this movie has had on society. Also, it's ironic that we're watching you watching the audience watch Truman. If Jim Carrey was watching us it would come full circle. :P

Actually “fingers crossed” here means a lie, whenever you promise someone something but cross your fingers it means you’re going to break that promise. With the promise in the photo being marriage, Meryl was basically saying “this marriage isn’t real I’m just doing it for my job”

A masterclass in manipulation for the benefit of others. Very good movie. I actually saw it in the theaters and really liked the music in the 'awakening scene'
"EdTV", Another movie released around the same time explored similar themes.

i remember when i was a kid the fingers crossed had two meanings, and i think both are used in the film. it was like a magic sign you could do when you lie, to prevent from getting caught in the lie. and then also it was like a good luck sign.

First off, Hufflepuff represent! :D Second off, this is the role that really made me respect Jim Carey. I'd always known him as a comedian, though his usual brand of humor wasn't always my cup of tea. This role was when I started seeing his real range as an actor, and made me a fan of his.

I love this movie which surprises me. I’m not a fan of Jim Carey and I do not find him funny. But I’m this movie he kills it. I like others would want one more scene. But it’s about him having his choice.
Jim Carey won a Golden Globe for his performance. I think Ed Harris was nominated for an Oscar.
