I'm a truck driver , there are few things company or driver falsifying log book , appointments for pickups or deliveries , punishment (huge fee) for showing up late , end of the shift hard to find parking , stores or businesses posted signs "NO TRUCK PARKING" , truckers get parking fines , many rest areas closed for no obvious reason just closed , so what driver or company do ? , alter logs and keep going , driver gets tired , stressed badly and outcome is an accident , it's ridiculous
Some businesses don't like trucks on the premises because of messy drivers , agree , I see it , so to find out the way penalize those dirty ones badly , nice ones don't deserve to be harassed because of the bad ones
    That's a serious issue

I've worked for a variety of truck companiesfor ten years from mega carriers to small fleets, local and OTR. Every single company has a minimum expectation that you operate on the threshold of legality/criminality. Anything less and you are undesirable and a bad egg. That line is set at 70hrs/week. They want you to be on that line every day of every week. If you come in below it, you are performing poorly. If you go over it, you are a criminal. 70hrs exactly is practically impossible to achieve due to the many variables... traffic, weather, parking, shipper/reciever delays/etc, so everyday you land on one side or the other. What the driver here did was wrong. What their company did was wrong. But make no mistake, the standard in this industry forces every driver to straddle that line, or quit, as so many new drivers do.

Normally when I planned a trip I could pretty much do that in my head except for this one time I was glad to get this. Somehow I miscalculated my available hours to do it legally. I run the load and was recalculating and realized I wasn't going to have the hours to make it. I run it anyway and got caught by the log dept. I am glad to hear that. I drove from 1996 to 2008 for Schneider. They were serious about safety, believe it or not. They may have lacking in driver training, pushing students out after only a few weeks of training. But over the years I was there they kept getting stricter and stricter about log books and hours of service. In 1996 you could almost run two log books , by 2008 when I left E logs were on the horizon and your log had to match everything perfect. Tolls , fuel stops , satellite tracking , etc , etc.

I've been on E-logs for over 5 years now, and the company re-arranges things whenever it suits them. I diligently sign and certify my logs daily, and then once in a while, I need to go back and re-sign and certify logs that I had already signed off on more than a week ago, because somebody in the safety and compliance department needed to shave down some hours or minutes in order for something that's coming up, that I'll be the last person to know about it. Well, first of Jan this year, I quit going back and re-signing anything that I did not personally edit, and know nothing about. I'm just waiting for the moment when I get pulled in for an inspection, and the guy says... "Hey, you didn't sign your log on such n such a date", and I tell him, "Yeah bud, I sure did. Somebody did some editing that I was not made aware of, and I'm not signing something that I did not do myself. Don't like it, go do a facility audit at our office."

Then all the sudden new companies started popping up overnight with 3000 new trucks. My heart goes out to the family members affected by this tragic incident. When wavy 10 was initially reporting this, they also reported that the driver of the party bus party bus and the company who owned it were being investigated. Wavy reported that the driver of the party bus allegedly had a suspended drivers license and a couple of prior charges. They also reported that the party bus had been modified which limited its drivability and only allowed the bus to travel up to 40 miles per hour. The driver of the 18 wheeler initially said that the rear lights of the bus were not on making the party bus hard to see until the last moment. Apparently, many things were wrong that night on both sides. I’d like to hear the other side of the investigation.

As a former driver myself, one thing I know that seems to not be being mentioned here that is of all the interstates I ever traveled on had MINIMUM speed limits posted. 40mph is below every one of those that I know of. While this driver is going to be crucified for this crash, I can relate to his situation. You are pushed to make deadlines and you are threatened with losing your job if you fail. On top of that, driving long hours at night can lull you into a state of mind that is of half awake, half asleep. Then you have this bus driver moving way slower than regular traffic down the interstate at well below the speed limit and this is the results. There is no one thing that will prevent these types of accidents. This accident falls on many shoulders the way I see this particular crash.

You just cant make good money anymore as a truck driver. All the regulations they enforced to make it "safer" was only to hurt the drivers, owner operators & companies. It didnt make anything safer. I also like when there is an national emergency or disaster then all of those safety regulations go out the window. So what, do people's safety on the roads not matter then or is it not really about safety at all? You can't have it both ways. It isn't about safety at all. Its about controlling the supply chain, hurting the whole trucking business & the economy. I still have a CDL A license & was all about the OTR until they started that E log. I got out. You used to make good money doing it & now you cant. Pay is crap now because you cant hustle now. I used my license to land me another job making great money but driving a truck is only once & a blue moon. Its like 2% of my current job is driving a B class truck making old school hustling trucker money & not really having to drive. I drive a pickup truck everyday at work.

@@halstonmann8676 Well yes you ran like 5 different paper log books. I was taught how to do it but it seemed like there were less crashes back then because there was less pressure on drivers. The drivers knew their limits of what they could do & not do physically. Now there are so many regulations you must follow, forced to take breaks when you don't need a break & so on. Then you have to figure out ways to make up for lost time. Truckers are smart enough to make their own decisions & don't need the government guy sitting behind a desk somewhere to tell him what is safe & what is not. Truckers know their limits. Everyone is different. Plus like I said in emergencies or disasters all of those "safety regulations" go out the window & you drive to your personal limits like the old days. So if it's OK to do it & it is safe for motorists on roads when the government says that it is but why isn't it OK & safe for motorists on the roads all the time then? If they would just let drivers run like they know they can all the time like they do in emergencies then everything would get delivered on time & more stuff would get delivered. Truckers, trucking companies, businesses & consumers would all be happy. Truckers make more money. Would probably lower prices some on the goods. Businesses would probably make more money. Just wins all around. There would so much much less stress on the entire supply chain. I think it is all just another page in a book of the government wanting to control over everything. The government never knows what they are doing but wants their hand in everything. Reminds me of dispatch & office personal telling truckers how to do their jobs. They haven't a clue & they are just making it 1000 times harder & God knows you can't tell them that. Let the Truckers truck & you just set at your desk & staple some papers or play with your spreadsheets on your computer. While I'm telling everyone about stuff I think is stupid I want to also throw out there the in cab cameras that watch you as you drive. Dash cams are ok but not watch the driver cams. You scratch your nose, remove your hat to scratch your head while you drive or etc it is all distracted driver violations that count against you & any kind of safe driver bonuses that you could receive but you don't because itched your nose or had a runny nose & wiped your nose 3 or 5 times in a month. I guess to get your safe driver bonus you are just supposed to let the snot run all over your face. Safe driver bonuses are a scam. I mean wtf, are we not adults or what? OK, I am done complaining about why I stopped being a otr truck driver.

He had an eld. They said he called his company and they reset it somehow to make it look like a co driver had been driving.

He was falsifying the eld by claiming a 2nd driver that didn't exist

Rip to the victims and survivors of this Horrific accident. This was a Magnitude of bad Events that came together at once. The bus has mechanical issues why it was 40 mph it was late at nite. The driver Clearly Had Road Hypnosis. Just sad all the way around.
