May I offer Tip #11 which I also learned the hard way…. Rotate your pots a quarter turn each time you water!
Doing this I actually had a vine- English Ivy growing bolt upright! Looked so funny!
In the end I decided to stop turning it so it would drape down nicely
Omg my mother used to do it for all her plants, I had completely forgotten about it, will do!🙏🏽
That’s a good tip!
Well, hello friend! 😊 I started with just a few plants after my son died in my home. I wanted to bring some light and life in to a very dark place. Who knew, it would also bring some light and life back into my dark heart. You've been helping me on this journey for almost 4 years now. I thank you, and my plants definitely thank you. 🥰
I like that you took time to encourage people to learn about the common plants and dive into their relatives. Some of my favorite plants aren't that hard to find, nor cost a small fortune. People should start easy and succeed.
Repotting before acclimating and potting in no drainage hole planters are definitely two lessons I’ve learned from experience.
“I don’t care what you saw on buzzfeed” ❤️❤️ I love this video with its honesty!
I'm a beginner plant owner and planted lemon seeds and I am so proud they are growing!
The look on Muffins face, lol, a lack of enthusiasm for her moment in the camera. she’s so cute.
i've been following and watching this channel for a long time and never commented until today. but i will say, this is one of my favorite and most informative videos on plant care and expectations that i have seen so far, ESPECIALLY about plant pots, yellowing leaves, and bugs. i watched plant videos religiously for a year before buying any, and it wasnt until 1-2 years, after quickly accumulating 100+ plants, before i experienced yellowing leaves, bugs, and dying plants. i was MORTIFIED and thought i was a "bad plant parent" and threw out all my plants and watched all that money (on plants AND pretty anthro/terrain pots/cachepots) go out the window. i went through this cycle 2-3 times before i finally realized and accepted that it was just NORMAL. and now i know how to manage and maintain my plants, and deal with nonsense when it happens. yes, sometimes its my fault (overwatering after forgetting to water for 3 weeks), and sometimes its just... PLANTS. SOIL. GROWING THINGS. open windows and humidity. DUH. so, great informative straight-talk video, nick. also, love any video where muffin makes an appearance.
This is the cutest, most well spoken, most heartwarming video ever! Thank you!
I can keep all of my rare plants, even the dramatic prayer plants, looking and growing fantastic. YET I have killed 3 spider plants LOL! That's my three strikes.
A moisture meter and 4 desktop grow lights opened up my houseplant options. I started off with zz plants, spider plants, and snake plants. My zz and snake plants are growing quite a bit now that they get supplemental light. I went from 4 plants in my room to over 24 on like 6 months. Mostly because my monstera siltepecana, syngonium pink, and purple passion plant, and various tradescantia are fast growers. I'm attempting to grow micro tom tomatoes inside my bedroom as well, so far so good. They definitely live up to their name.
Just a note on cache pots. I love to get unusual pots or dishes/pitchers from thrift stores. That way, they are cheap and I can put my new plants (and their nursery pot) into it until I can find it’s forever pot (until it outgrows it, of course). This way, i don’t feel bad if I do not like the thrift store pots anymore, i just donate them back. Also, i find fun glass vessels that I fill with water and leave on my plant shelves. They are decorative, if my plant is dry, i have room temp water right there ready to go.
One thing to note on the last point too is that even if a plant is dying you can usually revive it by propagation. Even if there is no leaf. Im a little too hands on with my plants and killed one by overwatering, I was able to chop between the nodes and propagate them in sphagnum moss, now its coming back.
edit: word
I’ve cut aPoinsettia (Bethlehem star) right back when it lost virtually all its leaves and it recovered beautifully
I learnt too that plants (especially climbing philodendrons) that have thin stems at the bottom benefit more from buying a deeper pot, taking leaves off the thin part and burying the entire stalk along with the root into the pot. Those nodes will create more roots to keep the plant more stable and you're not at risk of snapping your plant in a future repot because you tied it to a pole to support a huge plant on a tiny stem! The plants are much better off without the fear of loosening half the plant when you're due to repot it.
Do you use any worm casting tea? Worms create the best fertilizer on the planet! I raise millions of worms for fertilizer for my garden, and to teach others how to care for them :)
I love your suggestion to wait until your new plant pushes out a good quality new leaf before you repot it. Very helpful and I’ve not heard that tip before. Thank you!
When I was buying plant pots (with holes!) I struggled with the aesthetic until I realized, that it too is part of the whole houseplant vibe. I'm glad I stuck to a colour theme with my pots and only selected what I loved. Thanks for the encouragement Nick.
yo, my dude, you can always dyi your planters! I know that in US you guys now have great terracota and cement looking spray paint - just spray your old planters and you don't have to get rid of them! I dyi my planters all the time - like, if I like the texture, but not the colour - no probs: paint, decoupage, cover in jute - you can do a lot to repurpose!
“And also, if you don’t like bugs you shouldn’t have plants.”-Truth Teller Nick
Bugs 🐛 aren’t the most fun part of plant care, sure true yes…but once I accepted it as a normal process it took that unnecessary stress away. Maintaining good habits of observation and care routines it should be minimized.
I still don’t like bugs though 😁🤪
Hi Muffin! We love to see you, cutie ❤️
I love the tip to wait until it grows a good leaf before repotting.
I am new to your channel, but i love your style of speaking and also especially your enthusiasm and love for plants. I am new to planting, so Im so excited to go on this journey with you!
Completely shocked 😲 that the King of Dark_Plant_Spots is talking about lighting. 🤩😍
#6 THANK YOU!!!
For addressing this. Staging a plant in a cachepot is the easiest way for me to maintain root health. Healthy roots = healthy plant.
thank you Nick for sharing these essential tips. I’d say if you get this 10 down on 3 different genus, your doing semi-pro 😉 muffin is so adorable, always a great guest star! 💚😎💚
Another tip for/from me - plants are in your room for you, not you for the plants. Don't get much, get those which can live OK in your household conditions, think about an esthetic side.
So true that you they're is so much to figure out on your own. Very thoughtful of you to package it up in this video
He's right. Muffins expression was hilarious when u picked her up lol
How funny, re pests. You can get bugs in your house even if you don’t have plants! Especially, in those climates that don’t have a winter. Thanks Nick for another educational video. However, I have used non-drainage hole planters with PON and they work fine.
That's not in soil, a bit different...
Muffin is too adorable. Thanks for the care tips, you have a great attitude about real life expectations with plants. And your background is beautiful 😍 🪴
Thank you! 😊🪴
Nick can you please make a video on caring for a pink princess? I could use your knowledge ❤
The plants that I have taken to my place of employment are flourishing finally! I was worried when I first started bringing some to have in the office that we were re decorating at the time. The previous office staff had old planters that were in there but the plants had all died...
Then lately, I noticed my Baltic Blu was fuller, bigger, higher and just as gorgeous as could be. I went to water it after being gone for a weekend and the back side that is to the wall is well, not like the front... lol! I was going to turn it after I watered it, so the back side would face the window that's across the room from the file cabinet that it sits on but I thought Naw, I'll leave it like this, it looks great! 🤣
P.S. I love Muffin ❤️
Lol I was wondering when muffin would show up!❤️❤️❤️
Hello Nick, such great tips, thank you so much!! Love a Muffin Alert, she is adorable!!!
Sorry to comment again but I do want to say thank you for the tip in a previous video. You showed a systemic pest control grit type that you mix in the soil w a purple lid and I decided to try it and it’s AMAZING!! Almost all of the thrip damage I was seeing occur on new leafs has completely stopped! I couldn’t find any thrips on my actual plants but I could see the tell tell signs of thrip damage. And now all my new growth is beautiful and perfect no more thin wrinkly wonky scabby looking leafs. Seriously thank you!
Hi Nick! Great tips for just about everyone. Love Muffins appearances, even though she doesn't always look happy about being picked up. LOL! Thank you so much for sharing!
Me: swatting at a fungus gnat
Nick: pests are going to happen
This helped me so much.
Thanks very much your explaining how to care indoor plane for beginner
Really enjoyed watching this video , learned so much , I’m very new to adding plants inside my house , thanks for such informative videos 😊
Thanks Nick for all your wise info.
Great video Nick!
What a great video with important care content. Thank you!
Much appreciated tips!
As always an incredibly helpful video with great information! Ty!
👍! Nick, give yourself a BIG back pat! Gina Kapuscinski
So encouraging. Thank you!
Great video Philly Nick! You always deliver the goods!
Love this.... Thank you.
Hi, Nick & Muffin 🤗
Great video! Never hurts to have a refresher course in basic plant care. I too, also have a multitude of rainbow colored cachepots from my not sure what i was doing period! Ugh...
Going to buy some spray paint and alleviate the problem ( I also hate wasting money)😌
Awe Natalie, I cringed and laughed when Nick said that about the cachepots because I also did the exact same thing! I've been using them to give away starter plants but it doesn't seem to be working out. I don't have that many starters! Lol
I think you idea is great! 😄
What is a cachepot please?
It's ok.i watched again.must have been disturbed and missed it first time.
Great video. Really helpful. ❤
Great tips! Love your videos ❤️
Great advice! Thanks, Nick. 👍
Excellent tips 👍🏽
Wonderful video! Thank you for all of your advice. I am purging thru all of my planters and even painting some so they match. *sigh* Hiiiii Muffin!!!!! You're So cute!
Great video!
Great tips, thanks Nick. Enjoyed the cameo by Muffin.
Yayy waking up to a new video! Love your content!
Thank you!! 😊
Hi I’m new to your channel! Thanks for this helpful video I have learned so much!
Thank you so so so so much for the tip about acclimating them! I have made that mistake so many times! Immediately reporting it and I have seen the difference. Those I was too lazy to repot are doing great , and the others I messed around with struggled. In fact my Japanese polystichum polyblepharum been struggling now for almost a year. My problem child.. I followed this whole social media myth of repotting immediately (not plant rescue, just general ). Thank you thank you
Omg you’re soo right!! I wanted the whole matching planter per type of plants, and I absolutely flubbed when I saw THEY NO LONGER SELL THEM.. and now I have more Philos than I thought and ughhh THEY DONT MATCH.
Just as a side note, I found the peace of buying plastic cups of interesting shapes at the DollarTree and their like named stores.
Get a water meter! They're around $10 and I swear it's saved me so many times from watering a plant that looks dry but is actually moist!
That’s a great tip! I use it all the time for my larger plants
great video 👍🏾
Great tutorial for us all!!! 💚🌱💚🌱🤗Hi Muffin🐱🖤
Hoping you're planning on doing a video about moving plants! I'm particularly interested in giant plants like many of your philos, as well as plants like a rhipsalis paradoxa that won't easily be "lifted and wrapped in paper"!
Literally how much water was always a weird question I never knew how to ask. it wasn't until recently that I realized that I was not grasping the concept of "moist soil"
I put a Hoya macrophylla variegata In a cachepot and it was just supposed to be a quick lil thing bc I came home and found the plant on the floor strewn about and the nursery pot destroyed. (I assume my dog got excited and knocked it off the shelf and my cat played w it and chewed the nursery pot cuz the crazy ass thing loves plastic🤦🏻♀️) But I was in a hurry so I scooped what I could off the floor and threw in a shit ton of bark before having to rush out and it’s been in there for like a yr now and it’s growing beautifully and I’m scared bc there’s no drainage it’ll rot but I’m also scared if that if I repot it it’ll be like “Yk what I was happy and now I’m dying!” Idk what to do! Lol
But yeah I blast my plants w light. Not sun. But grow lights I blast em all and they do soooo much better. I also keep a plant journal. It helps!
Great video!
I wish i would have seen this before i found thrips last week on several of my plants. I freaked out, pitched 3 that were infested (granted they hadn't been giving me much joy anyway and all 3 I had received free) and cut a bunch of them back.
The good news is I saw caltain jack deadbug did kill a few adults...
Still. Scary. I don't know how you don't freak out with an enormous collection!
The only time I repot immediately when I bring it home, is when the plant is absolutely saturated and waterlogged. I'm not comfortable letting it sit for days in soggy soil.
I planted a plant into a stoneware pot early on, my Tineke rubber plant and it's to late to take it back. I feel like as a first plant mistake I picked the best one since she likes water and somehow lived these last 6 months
I love you so much!!!!!!!!
Happy weekend Nick! Been waiting for your video! 😅 My tip would be to slow down buying plants when you are starting out. I killed ZZ plants cause I reported right after I got from IKEA. 😂
Oh, no killed a ZZ plant! 😉Like Nick said you'll pay your rent faster than you'll have to water a ZZ plant! 😁
Please tell Muffin that I would die for them
The annoyed look of the cat 😂
Hi Muffin! 💖
I have too disagree Nick on number one. If your buying a high light plant an you don’t have high light, buy a grow lite too. 😂💚
Hi great video thanks. I have a question about plants that require indirect light. Would you suggest using grow lights for those areas? Basically do grow lights work benefit all plants or should you avoid them on plants that require less light?
Learning lots from your videos. Thanks
The ones that nd less light don't usually nd a grow light unless u don't have any light for them at all in which case u can use a grow light but just place it a little further away from the plant. The closer the light, the stronger it is to the plant and yes grow lights can b used for any plant. U can get little grow bulbs cheaply that fit any lamp at any big box store or hardware store
@@bobbiechinn9578 thanks
What kind of shelf do you have your plants on behind you?! I love that setup!
It’s two VITTSJO from ikea!
Me just repotting the moment they come home
Hi, Can regular lights subsitute grow lights? please eleborate
yes regular lights can be used to grow plants but they might not have the right spectrum for the best growth
I just got my first philodendron BMF - Steve’s Leaves was having a BOGO sale so I got 2! I learned I live very close to their greenhouses, so I just picked them up and brought them home. But I need assistance please! They are in small nursery pots and I wasn’t prepared. They won’t stand upright because they’re top heavy and I don’t have a pole or pots yet. Is it okay for them to lay on their sides until I get one this weekend? Also, should I pot them together or separate? I will def be watching your DIY pole videos soon. Thank you for teaching me!
I would find something to prop them up! Even just a mug or bucket or cache-pot is fine
@@NickPileggiPlants I ended up staking them with a bamboo stick and putting them in a tall clear vase for now. They are at least 18 inches tall already so they’re just beautiful and won’t stay upright without support and I didn’t want to break them. Thanks for everything!
My 3rd try rule is for syngonium and ferns.
Can I ask when it comes to shower watering. What about getting leaves wet does it matter and would I need to research the water requirements like which plants don't mind tap water?
The plants that done like getting their leaves wet I’ll spot water instead of putting them in the shower
@@NickPileggiPlants THANKYOU. It seems obvious now .Now to do some research. Loving your new apartment by the way. Can't wait to see what you do with it.especially the skylight.
For me it was a tip from a video, it said putnails in the planter, and it was bad lots of plants died. Please bever do it and if possible share about it.
Hi muffin 🥰
I have revived plants, rescued and propagated , orchids blooming, huge angle begonia but for the life of me mint dies on me. 4th attempt. Don’t know what to do. Yes yes I know it’s like a weed…but alas…not for me.
Ok question. Bought a Thai Constellation 2 weeks ago. It’s in perlite but doing well, just unfurled a nice large leaf. Should I hold off, I feel it needs to get in the special potting mix I bought for it. Really want to know what you think.
make sure to plant if there’s a lot of healthy roots!! is. it a cutting or has it already rooted?
Haven’t pulled it out of the pot but pretty sure it’s rooted. Nice aerial root tucked into the perlite.
Once that new leaf is full developed, I think it’s a great time to repot!
💚💚
My little tip is don't keep moving plants around, it could do more harm than good.
This! It's so hard to not move them around!
@@Flora_sphere I know, I've done it alot and it's still hard not to but in my experience I've either killed or stunted the growth of plant so I do my best to fight the urge.
Also, the plants do all the work, just sit back and let them do their thing. Over-babying of our plants is not necessarily a good thing.
Kisses to muffin❤💋
Many thanks for this video and for these good reminders. Much appreciated! 👌🪴🥰
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This was a very helpful and much needed video. Greatly appreciated.😃🪴🪴
All very good tips!!!
All guilty when we started having plants🥲
