    Where do we start with this video. These are essentially the two most popular kamado grills that we sell, so we thought we should do a new video.
    Here is where we are at.
    Big Green EGG- This grill just seems a little long in the tooth to me. Its funny that only AFTER Kamado Joe came out with cool features like the spring assisted hood and the weather proof top, that all of the sudden Big Green Egg Makes improvements to their grill. And honestly its just not as good. The spring assisted hood feels a little cheap to me. You dont get many features with this grill and really nothing comes standard. ITs more of customizable to your specific needs which is nice, but its just not on par. And the fact that they need to be assembled is a big minus, cause I had a hard time getting it seated just right.
    Kamado Joe- They just seem to really have it together here. You get so much standard out of the box… The only negative to it, is it does cost a bit more. But the new classic III has really hit it out of the park! With improvements all around compared to the two model. The biggest and I would say the fan favorite would be the SLO Roller. Which is going to produce more smoke. Not to mention how much cooler all the accessories are!
    In conclusion the choice is easy to me. Go with the Kamado Joe all day long. Its better in every way. Comes with way more accessories. And is just flat out more fun to cook on.

    I've had a large egg for over 15 years and it has held up pretty well. I had a damaged fire ring a few years ago and was able to replace it, for free, through a local authorized dealer without too much hassle.
    I'm looking to increase capacity. I'll probably start with one of the expander kits. I'll consider a KJ if I purchase a second one.
    Replacing the BGE gasket isn't fun, but I imagine the KJ isn't too different.

    We're brand new to the ceramic Kamado cookers. We wanted something that we could cook year round with in the psychotic Wyoming weather. Like most we simply did some online research, read the ratings and made our final decision for the Kamado Joe Classic series 3. I've always known about the Big Green Egg for many years, and that's what I thought I would get prior to doing research. What sealed the deal for us is how many accessories come with the Kamado Joe. We hope to stop in to see you guys on our next trip to the Denver area. We enjoy your channel. Thanks.

    The ceramics are kiln fired at different temps. But just like the egg is slightly higher the primo is higher than the egg. IMO this is like having a tire on Toyota Prius rated for 200mph... if you can’t reach the range what does this even mean? Plus from a design perspective the firebox on the Joe allows expansion without cracking. I have cracked several BGE fire boxes and fire rings so in my experience this “better” ceramic argument is null and void. All leading manufacturers offer lifetime warranty on the ceramic anyways

    • @embersliving
      @embersliving  Před 3 lety +2

    • @SmokingDadBBQ

      Embers Fireplaces & Outdoor Living I am in Canada where BGE is sold by a distributor who is also responsible for warranty. They were not as good as the experience I read about for people living in the US dealing with the real BGE. After a few months I did eventually get things sorted and was never not helped

  • @aaront879
    @aaront879 Před 3 lety +16

    I am considering both but leaning toward the BGE for a few reasons. I notice all of the positive reviews have links to purchase the KJ. BGE is missing out on the internet purchases but I have to believe anyone making money from their review is going to give it to the KJ. I prefer the cast iron to the painted aluminum control tower. Have seen several complaints of issues with Control Tower. Since mine will be on a wooden deck the lower screen is very important to me which the KJ does not have. I don't like the metal fire ring that will warp in the KJ. With the trade war with China I believe getting parts for the KJ will be more difficult especially in a warranty situation. I prefer the use of gravity to keep the BGE sealed vs the latch needed for the KJ though I understand it makes opening the KJ easier. I actually prefer BGEs Eggspander to the KJ DaC system. It seems less fiddly. I understand how attractive it is to buy the KJ considering all that comes with the package though I have no issue picking the individual parts from BGE. There is also no question that KJ is dominating in the evolution of the Kamado grill but I am not convinced that they are vetting every change before putting it on the market. These are just my thoughts.

    • @embersliving
      @embersliving  Před 3 lety +4

      not bad thoughts at all. the only comment I would disagree on is your comment about positive reviews based on sales. I cant say compared to other reviewers and can only speak to our channel. We Would NEVER promote a product falsely based on being able to make money.

    • @aaront879
      @aaront879 Před 3 lety +2

      @@embersliving Thanks for the reply. I am certainly not accusing you of that. You are a dealer who has chosen to carry quality products. I am also not claiming the Kamado Joe is not a quality product. I am referring more to online reviewers who do not sell anything and link products to be purchased online for a profit. I am also not claiming that people are outright lying. I am just saying it is easy to play favorites for the one who essentially pays online reviewers to advertise. That can sometimes be without explicit intent. I believe more weight needs to be put on the history of BGE and their dedication to keeping parts available for many, many years. I am concerned that with all of the constant updates by KJ that getting parts in the future may be difficult. Kamado Joe obviously shines in the innovation department but BGE has proven themselves in longevity. That is very important considering these should last decades. I do believe KJ is forcing BGEs hand on the innovation side and there is no question BGE better move on innovating to stay ahead or even viable.

    Good comparison, thinks. My question is can you use two layers of racks on the Joe Classic III. I know there are two levels for the split sear/slow cooking, but I'm more interested in a full rack on two levels--ie., can I smoke some ribs on one level and, say, a brisket or something else on a higher level? Can you buy the half moon grates for that?

    I've had a Lg BGE for 25 years and it has survived 4 moves to different houses. Fire grate has cracked but is still useable, although I'm replacing that with cast iron. I'm also replacing the gasket for the first time this year. Truthfully, it should have been done long ago. I have stainless steel Chimney Cap with adjustable airflow. I like what I see with the KJ Classic III, and would probably upgrade to that if I ever do. BGE is a bit behind the times. That said, I've gotten a quarter century of enjoyment out of it.

  • @DanielMedina-lq4br
    @DanielMedina-lq4br Před rokem

    First off, great video. I really like your content. Second, Elijah put together the BGE integrated nest with handler wrong. The two locking casters need to go in the front, not on the right side of the BGE if you are facing it (or both locking casters in the back, if preferred). Third, you had to push that KJ handle down pretty hard and the latch still didn't catch (time stamp 8:38). What would you do if there was a brisket in there smoking? There are too many things that can go wrong with that latch and the hinge system that it just leaves too much room for failure. I know I might sound crazy when I say this, but I would much rather have a less advanced hinge system because there are less possible fail points with the spring assisted hinge system found on the BGE or KJ Series I.

    @user-kl8xe7kd3m Před rokem +1

    I have 2 green eggs, large and extra large. Been having them for 13 years. Cook on them all the time. Love cooking on them. My opinion the biggest downfall is the hinge system. Other issues, I had to replace the lower section of the extra large egg due to cracking covered under warrant. I also had to replace both metal plats where the charcoal sit, and both plate setters due to cracking. This was not covered under warrant. Currently my fire box parts are cracked in half, i have not replaced them yet. Neither eggs has been exposed to water. I have not decided what my next cooker will be, but most defiantly will not be a green egg.

    I have an original Kamado Joe 24inch, and it’s actually kind of shocking of how much Kamado Joe improved their products(as well as accessories)in the past 10 years or so, while BGE remained borderline stagnant in comparison. A great business example of brand truly making the effort to separate themselves as the segment leader.

    i've owned a large BGE since 2011....over the years, i've modified/added to my interior options just as a natural evolution for my style of cooking into something very similar to the layout contained in the KJ....this was even before I knew what KJ offered (i hadn't seriously looked at them before 2 years ago)....for me, it just made sense to make certain changes to the layout of the BGE for added flexibility....so I give KJ credit that they included accessories that do just that...will all my add-ons and changes, i'm sure i'm up to the price of a KJ3.....i've been completely satisfied with the quality and durability of my BGE, but have to admit that if it ever broke/cracked, I wouldn't hesitate to replace with a KJ...either option, the flow of how i cook on a kamado would not change...the KJ3 seems like a solid option.....good review

    Quick question man. Saw some of your vids while at work today and loved em. I did hit that subscribe button 😉 my question is, what’s your thoughts on the Akorn Kamado Grill from Chargriller? I was initially on the fence between a Weber and a kamado mainly cuz of the fact that the slow n sear accessories are all made more so for Weber kettles but have since decided to jump in the kamado pool. The only thing is the $$$. Kamado grills are definitely more expensive and I’ve seen multiple reviews match up the akorn well with the egg and KJ while at a quarter of the price and pretty much indestructible. Would love to hear your thoughts man. Cheers

      I used to have the Akorn. They actually seal in the heat too well. If you're ever doing low and slow if you get a heat spike it's hard work to get it back down. Mine got rain on one time. I fought the rust off for two years. Eventually gave up and trashed it. Long story short, definitely not built to last.
      In regards to Weber, I'm a huge fan. I've got Smokey Moutain and Genesis. I feel both of them could last 20+ yrs. So to answer your question, I think going with the Weber Kettle (or Performer) with Slow n Sear is the way to go.

      I’ve been using the Akorn for 5+years. I was sure to get the cover. It’s been great. It’s the only bbq I’ve had in that time. I’ve cooked plenty. I bought for the same reason as mentioned. Wasn’t sure if I could commit to the high price of the Kamado’s. the Akorn filled the void nicely. The double walled and latch keep the heat really well. If kept the heat for 16 hrs. You could say I’ve cut my teeth on it. I’m leaning toward the BGE because my brother-in-law (who got me into this) has had his bge for 10+ years. I believe most people Sid with the friend whe got them into it. Keep it simple, it’s charcoal and a grill. Only accessory you need at first is the heat diverter for smoking. I’m intrigued by some of the KJ features by think they overwhelm a newbie. In the end the best one is the one you end up with.

When you're not cooking and the slider is closed it then becomes rain proof. They have an accessory that mounts on the back of the new top vent that will shield it from the rain, at an additional cost of course. What does it take to put a qualty gasket on the lid. You're lucky to 1 year out of their cheap felt gasket. Everything from Big Green Egg is ala cart and when you add up the accesories you need such as the cart, the side shelves, the plate setter, their new rack system it's more expensive than the Classic II but not the new Classic III. Big Green Egg's new spring system is better than what they had but if the handle slips out of you hand when lowering the lid it can do some serious damage to the lid or your hand. WAKE UP BIG GREEN EGG!!

My Kamado also cracked and it took 5 months to ship one from China. Then the band did not fit the new upper and lower dome, I guess the replacement is a bit wider. Yet they insisted it should fit. The replacement done didn’t sit well on the crate and again they insisted it should fit. They said I should hammer it with a rubber mallet to force it gently but 2-3 inches from the bottom of the crate. No way that would of worked. So when I say they have less reliable parts, I’ve experienced it.

    Green Egg ceramic better? I don’t think so. I own a lg Green Egg. Bought in 2009. I cook a lot on it. I’m on my 3rd base… all replaced under warranty. But they cracked under heat. been though 1 fire box that cracked into several pieces… again, replaced for free… but I thing these a design flaws… I think my bases cracked due to pressure from the nest. It fits very tight and the metal flexes to grip the base tightly… the 2 bases that cracked were right where the prong is or slightly above…then again, they could have been manufacturing defects. Kamado Joe’s warranty looks similar to the original owner… the KJC III looks like a much more refined product…

    I have been 100% committed to picking up one of these two and the Kamado gods shone upon me today, however, KJ has been sold out for a while and hasn’t had many price reductions. Though I settled for BGE, I feel I came out on top as I got the egg, nest, plate setter, ash tool, grate gripper, box of fire starters and a bag of charcoal for 1200. On top of that received a $100 gift card which essentially slashed the expander kit in half so for 1300 I can do MOST of what a KJ can do minus the amazing SLO Roller. I’ll be envious of team red but I am happy with what I got

    • @aaront879
      @aaront879 Před 3 lety +1

      Please explain.

    • @samgillespie
      @samgillespie Před 3 lety

      Aaron T I think the main things are the fire basket in separate parts (to avoid cracking and having to replace it), ash drawer and the air hinge (notice how the lid doesn’t really lift off completely on the BGE? For me, it’s more the innovation that KJ are bringing with their accessories.

    • @aaront879
      @aaront879 Před 3 lety

      @@samgillespie As I said, I will hand it to KJ for their innovation. One thing I am cautious about with a company dedicated to innovation is the availability of parts for older models. One day the Classic III will be an old model and they may no longer support it because they have come up with "something better". This doesn't seem to be an issue with BGE. Admittedly this is due to what some may call a lack of innovation but I don't believe in the idea that newer must be better. Let's not forget we are looking at 3,000 year old technology here. If I pay nearly $2000 for a Kamado that should last me decades I had better be able to get parts for the life of it.BGE has proven they can do this. In my eyes KJ is not yet tested in this area. I don't think this gets enough attention.

      Both these companies make their own ceramic I think, or have significant control of the production process. I think KJ have done more to address reliability in the construction of the fire bowl, cap and charcoal basket over the years. The control centre is more measured. Also less wonky now. Due to weight though and the space I may just have to get a kettle or Joe jr.
