Is a 2018-20 Monster 821 a viable beginner bike?

    Great video! I had a cbr500 as my first bike and yea it was an awesome bike to learn on as you highlighted that was a beginner friendly bike.
    I love the monster from that angle you lean it.

      Yea, I still would say without a doubt the 821 is no beginner bike to anyone thinking due to weight, limited steering degree, height, slow speed maneuverability. If experienced with many years riding in different environments then its manageable and not a big deal. Also its pretty freaking fast when you twist the throttle wide open in sport map. Still plenty fast in lower hp map as well. get into trouble real, out ride the brakes fast. The small Ninjas, smaller honda bikes then 600rr and even a suzuki SV650 are best to learn on away from crazy highway traffic. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Not a bike for green riders but definitely ok for intermediate riders.

      Now after riding for a full year, just about every day, I still would not advise or tell a new/green rider to jump on one of these 821/1200. The main reason is the slow speed maneuverability characteristic.

    what about the 696?

      It's been a long time since I rode that bike. Likely a better new rider bike. Lower price tag too. I think I recall the valve maintenance is the older 7,500 miles but most people can ride for years and not ride 6,000 miles. Still a very cool looking bike that is unique. Approx 355 lbs so lighter by fair amount when compared to the 821 which I recall is pushing 445 lb wet weight. 80 hp still pretty good too but for me the 112hp was the better option since I'm about 200lbs.

      I had a 795 which is basically a 696 with a 796 engine limited in Southeast Asia. It’s air cooled and more viby, less refined and no electronics (mine had abs that’s about it). There’s less power but you still get the monster vibe and good low end torque. Being smaller and lightweight it’s more nimble as well.
      I wouldn’t say the 696 is a beginner friendly bike as it’s tough to navigate at low speeds due to the shaky character but then again it’s a matter of getting used to it.
