Why Racing Pigeons Are So Expensive | So Expensive

- Racing pigeons aren’t the typical bird you’ll find on the city streets. These pedigree birds can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In March 2019, Armando the racing pigeon sold to a bidder in China for over $1.3 million. So what is it that makes racing pigeons so expensive?

At my dad’s peak he had about 1500 pigeons! Too bad he couldn’t sell any realy good ones, but he did win a lot of competitions
👍
Hope you ate them then atleast
@@Replicant-by1eh Hopefully not as that is a cruel thing to do
I will never look at a NYC pigeon the same way
You can thank breeders for massive populations of feral pigeons they abandoned to urban areas. They breed hundreds just to get the one racing champion they can sell for a fortune.
@Jace Johnson Pigeons are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds on the planet and able to undertake tasks previously thought to be the sole preserve of humans and primates. ... The pigeon can also recognise all 26 letters of the English language as well as being able to conceptualise. Human ignorance of other species and what the science tells us is the dumbest and most dangerous problem here.

I have one homing pigeon. My dad rescued him from a dangerous little spot at work and he was pretty much half dead. He brought him home and I took care of him. He had a brother but his brother didn’t make it past 3 months. I was sweeping out my pigeons coop today and he kept attacking the brush.
Pigeons are so cute and clever and I love their adorable lil' faces!

The feeling of seeing your birds come back home.
I had pegeons and one of my pigeon which I gave it to my friend. He released him at the time sun set think pigeon Won't Leave his place but he just drank water and flew away. He left that place almost 7pm and 8:30 pm night he was at my house. I still miss him.
Imagine the ransomers who stole somebody's pidgeon ring the guy and be like
*in dark deep voice*: "We have your pidgeon"
I had no idea that these types of birds are so expensive. I just thought you catch them or something and train them like a parakeet
Nice pic
Ryan Garcia ikr damn
They are pretty expensive but you can't just catch one since those are extremely inbred but what I use them for is hatching eggs like let's say I have Indian fantail eggs ill put them in her nest and she raised him but they do cost a buck or two
Omg. Pigeons will always return to their roost. So when the army took pigeons with them. Knowing they'll return home. To race pigeons they would all have to be released in a different place at the same distance and which one gets home first
defenitly not
Pigeon : free they are literally outside
La de racer pigéon : 1.4mil$
This reminds me of the time in my young life (20) when I had racing pigeons. Fond memories!!
In our neighborhood, its a common practice that when someone's pigeon came into your loft they gotta have to pay a ransom to get it back. I have 10 pairs of pigeons before, we used to track those trucks that are going to release racing pigeons. When we see some pigeons already in air, we release some of our pigeons to lure some of racing pigeons into our lofts. Its like piracy and I miss clapping and whistling for pigeons.
They also were used for their eyes... They were used to find lost at sea sailors
This reminds me of the video I made on how a racing pigeon beat a network company in a race of data transfer speed.
So they're pretty fast, yeah.
Me - ok let me see an expensive video before i go to work to keep me motivated!
I never knew these existed still.
Anyone else remember the pigeon guy episode on Hey Arnold! I didn't know racing pigeons was a real thing till now.
Lmao I have a friend that called me that guy
Everybody thinking they can grab a pigeon from their backyard and end up with a bird even worth $5.00 is insane. These birds are like race horses and have been breed to near perfection in some cases. People spend decades breeding off of champion birds. A wild pigeon couldn’t do half the stuff race pigeons do
true My Relative my grandmother's brother manage to Breed a pigeon That can fly from Sabah Malaysia back to Manila
I have one feral blue bar from the Bronx my MIL found as a baby. He’s just the sweetest most easy going pet. Like a cat. He did a mating dance for me! 😂 My sweet Henry.
Today's fact: Pigeons are monogamous creatures (one couple mate for a lifetime). Couple of pigeons can produce up to 8 broods per year when the food is abundant.
Wrong fact
What’s wrong about it?
They're socially monogamous, but they do mate with other pidgeons.
Smart birds.
No they are not. If you have a pair and add another cock, they will fight (by hitting each other with their wings) and the winner owns the hen.
False
I mean how, the ones i see, all they do is eat, dance and mate whole day
And poo
Same as people .
more than that. research dood.
@@ImNinjaSquirtles yea but atleast research on smoething
Because these aren’t regular pigeons they’re high end top of the line breeds worth thousands they aren’t your regular good for nothing sky rat you see eating bread in the street those can’t do a thing that these can I own about 40 high roller pigeons and I hate when ppl and new friends think they’re normal pigeons they see in the street they have nothing to do with each other
Really great video explaining it all the most expensive pigeon was not far from where i live.
Me, an intellectual: *catches a street pigeon and feeds it bread crumbs laced with coke and sells it for $1.4 million*
sells to whom ? 👍
Thats not how it works idiot
Will not work. Very obvious in the eye sign.
guess, you don't know how this works.
Jeez do none of you not understand a joke?
I raised pigeons as a kid,I learned a lot. For instance did you know there's a thing called pigeon pox. Horrible disease affects only the pigeons. The local 4-H club hooked me up with the medication I need to stop all the birds from dying and the birth defects their associated with
Blute t-shirt guy is either an Italian mafia or some long lost brother of robert de Niro 😁
Idk man kinda looks like Jerry Seinfeld if he gave up...
Would have been a tremendous service to have given and explanation of the race for pigeons with an animated or still diagram of what that is about. But nice article anyway.
They literally separate them from their mate, and let them panic-fly back to their mate. It's cruel honestly
I’m over here trying to sleep and this video comes up as recommended
I loved racing pigeons but I gave it up because so many of the birds don't make it back that I felt it was unethical. I still have about 50 birds but they just fly around the house and hang out on the roof.
Whasapp me I am sale my birds
i once raised pigeons and used to flew them up in the sky. SOld one white one in down town amman in a birds market , 2 days later he was on the top of my roof back again , LOOL. also a falcon once i bought and trained. Flew him one let him go skied in the sky and laded back at the house. awesome times!
They have a great deal of them in Cuba 🇨🇺
Even the gvnt supports and encourages the sport. They say that just in case they go to war they'll be able to have them for backup communication.
True and their good For decoys
I've always loved pigeons. It's sad but a lot of them are used in religious ceremonies too. 😢
@Shaikh Mustafa Salman I wish I did, I have a parakeet now, when I was younger my neighbors had some, we could pet them and hold them. They weren't afraid of humans.
@Shaikh Mustafa Salman no way!! Thats so awesome! I🤯🤗, I also have 2 cats and a puppy, so she I a big cage and I let fly around the house. I put the animals in a different room first
I have so many questions:
1) How do they know where to go
2) Why do they come back and not fly away? (Consistent food I guess)
3) How do you race them? Is it short distance or always long distance?
It's not always food. I have racing pigeon (I don't race them ) and they go out when sun comes out and they're full of foods when they're back. A safe home is enough for them they're really loyal to you.
@@agusrt.sncinj thanks for the info - can you let me know about the other questions?
1. No one knows for sure how they know their way home. Some say they sense the magnet energy. The angle of the sun or by smell. It might be a combination.
My best guess is the magnet theory. Mainly because they circle around a bit before they head in one direction. Just like we have to do with our phones sometimes to get the GPS to work.
2. It's instinct.
3. They do both short and long distance. There is a famous race in England where they release the Birds in France and they fly over the English channel. It's around a 600 Mile race.
....my grandfather had pigeons during WWII and my dad raced them in NY. One of my brothers has a white dove release business in NY and another brother has a one Loft race in Louisiana.
I have kept racing pigeons in the past , but never raced they are among the most enjoyable animals I have kept

In Pakistan we have pigeons who can fly all day long even at the temperature of 50 C + .
Yes but those highflyers are not racing pigeons

My grandfather raced pigeons in Brooklyn. Vincent Caldarola. We still have the poster from the memorial race when he died.
Fantastic 9ice setup for pigeon ❤❤👍👍
I'm clueless about this topic, however I'm interested in how this works. When the bird is released how does it know the course of the race? Also how in the heck does it go so far away and find its way back so easily?
Magnetic waves of the earth they can detect it
I remember the cartoon Catch the pigeon with Muttly and his laughing
Great video brother
Why do I ALWAYS look at a Pigeon and think of Mike Tyson ? Much Love Mike !
Thank you for specifying “expensive” for I am a pigeon
You are a chicken
Great job
How do they know how to come back? It always baffles me! I love birds. I've been watching one at my house for a month now. It comes angmd goes. Now it has company of its kind. I think it's what we call a chicken hawk in Jamaica. It's so pretty. I just wanna touch it.
I too love those birds for sure
Such an awesome history for birds people consider flying rats. I wrote up a petition to stop the abuse of pigeons at a fedex I used to work at and won. I saw those birds raise young better than a lot of humans, but I also respect them since my great grandfather used to raise them
So the world's first drone was invented in 1907 by Julius Neubronner. You learn something new everyday!
We had a racing pigeon come to our backyard and sit on the lid of our hot tub everyday for no reason and we looked up the owners tag on its leg and turned out the owner passed away so the bird was on its own, a few weeks later of hanging out in the backyard an animal bit its wing and we had to take it to a vet, he lost his wing so can't fly anymore but we built him a big cage so he can be inside and on nice days he likes being carried outside. Been a few years and I was afraid he'd get depressed but thankfully he's not. He's full of love and energy. Now he gets spoiled with toys and premium food he's living the life 😂
Wow! Very Expensive bird. Amanda!
Just a hint look at the nose or beak of the bird. Just like a race car the more sleek and aerodynamic it looks the more expensive the bird. Those pigeons you see on billboards, will not have that aerodynamic look. I know you think it's crazy but it's true the wild ones their head will come down and make a sharp turn towards the beak. The racing pigeons of good stock the head will blend right in to the beak in a very streamlined form
It's kind of funny how pigeons went from being the birds of the nobility to being super common animals then being sold at very high prices again. Granted, most pigeons aren't super specialized racing pigeons, but still.
The line "You love your Daddy, yeah?" In that New York accent just killed me.
This was great, I have been researching "excellence products for racing pigeons" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Hansaac Riyliver Scheme - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my brother in law got excellent results with it.
What built can you put on the pigeon to make it fly faster?

If you want to send a message with a pigeon, how the pigeon is supposed to know where he has to deliver the message? It's not like he is gonna read the recipient's name...
pigeons are trained to 'fly home' - so to have a messenger pigeon you'd have one of them from the area you want to send the message to and they will fly back to their coop (and relay the message)
