Hospice Volunteer Says He’s Against Medical Aid in Dying

- In 2014, 29-year-old Brittany Maynard transformed the conversation about medical-aid-in-dying, which allows a terminally ill patient with a prognosis of six months or less to live and is capable of making their own healthcare decisions, to self-administer prescribed medication to die with dignity. At the time, medical aid-in-dying was only authorized in four states, but today, it has been legalized in 10 states and Washington D.C. Additionally, many Americans are choosing to fly internationally to use medical aid-in-dying for non-terminal illnesses. With its growing popularity and more and more legislation being passed, Dr. Phil and his guests discuss dying on your own terms. With only one life, who says you can’t control your end date? And, is it your right to die on your own terms? (21012)

he thinks its murder but i think its torture to force someone to live every last breathe until pain kills them
as a chronic pain sufferer this guy is a fkn idiot
As a retired hospice nurse, I know I don’t want to suffer. I want control of my leaving. I have my plan.
I said the same thing.
What plan?
I am also a former hospice nurse. This guy is just a volunteer. He doesn’t have a medical background. He needs to stay on his lane. He has no standing here. He’s also a total jerk.
Hospice guy is a very lucky man. He’s obviously never experienced the type of horrific pain that people in Hospice experience.
Exactly. He was condescending too with his "I've lost loved ones too so dont think you're the only ones who's faced this" like who said no one else has had loved ones die from cancer??? And when he said theres a lot to unpack from the mans story of his wife dying. He came off as a condescending, ignorant prick. He thinks by being a hospice VOLUNTEER not a dr or a nurse, then that somehow makes him educated in the medical community. I wouldn't want him anywhere near my family or loved ones on hospice, he definitely does come off as creepy. maybe he wants to keep them alive and in a venerable state so he can be a creep with them. yep! thats what I think.
And... You've personally experienced it?
I did a nursing home at 54 years old. I saw how they treat patients. I healed. I will never go back. Hospice guy doesn’t have a clue.
Hospice guy works with hospice patients all the time. He said so. Your comment about him not knowing about pain experience by hospice patients is objectively inaccurate.
Promo- he is a hospice VOLUNTEER. He knows NOTHING about the death and dying process. I’m a hospice nurse of many years. He would NOT be tolerated as a volunteer at any hospice I have ever seen. He needs to stand down. He has absolutely NO standing!
As a nurse, I think modern medicine can be modern torture to the dying.... sometimes. Like everything in life: context, context, context. Most of us have given treatments knowing the person will live a few months longer, but at what cost to their comfort..and the pocket of everyone else. I don't know all the answers and it is complex.
Exactly Pam. A living will and directives could solve a bunch of issues. It will keep family from having to make a decision in an emotional situation.
@@EeveePeaches Amen Eevee.... giving CPR to terminally ill.... Horrifying torture. 😟. Sorry, I mean for the patient....well, for everyone, really.
people take their own lives every day for "emotional" reasons --yet we force folks who are in awful physical situations and pain to get "permission" to end it. Absurd.
The volunteer is trying to intellectualize this. He talks about long term consequences. What are the long term consequences of a terminally ill person in terrible pain choosing to end that pain?
@@j.y.3604 Brittany chose November 1, 2014 as her death date. She had a seizure that morning and since they were getting worse, she was worried that the next one may be bad enough to prevent her from taking the pills herself (No one could help her; that was illegal. She had to swallow them on her own.) So she got into bed, surrounded by Dan, her mom, and a few close friends (one being a doctor). She wrote a Facebook post saying goodbye, then took the pills. She was asleep in five minutes and gone maybe 30 minutes later.
She lived more in her years than most people do in 50. But she and Dan were only married around two years and had actively been trying to start a family 😢
Sorry for his loss 😢
If the person is in constant pain and is in the right mind knowing the illness is not treatable then it should be his or her own decision on how they want to pass away. In my opinion.
I think you hit the fine point. If the person chooses suicide and does it that is one thing but requiring assistance is another matter. I have stage 4 cancer but I would never ask a doctor or anyone else to aid in my demise. If on the other hand I decide to off myself by my own hand that is another thing.
@@rustynails8756 what's your age and from what cancer are you suffering?
@@RS-sx6ne I am in my 60s and have stage 4 metastatic BC
@@rustynails8756 BC is breast cancer ? Am I right ?
@@RS-sx6ne yes and metastatic means the cancer has spread beyond the original site. There are several "stages" of BC with stage 4 being the final stage. Stage 4 has no cure and palliative care is the best option. Palliative care is mostly about treating symptoms. An example is I have a great deal of bone pain as that is an area the cancer has spread to so I am treated for the pain. Is there a reason you are interested in my condition?
There is no life when you have a terminal diagnosis.
My 85-year-old sister-in-law was given 2 months to live because of fourth stage cancer. They wanted to put her into hospice. I took her home gave her good food to eat vitamins power shakes lifted her spirits with Christian music. Cancer went into remission . She lived for another 3 years. My 76-year-old mother had fourth stage cancer given 2 months to live my sister put her into hospice and she died within 4 days from morphine induced shots. Doctors should not predict deaths. I had cancer and got well with good food and lift the spirits and staying away from junk food and GMOs. Cancer is a symptom of toxic food and environment
In my right mind right now at 42 and watched a love one die of a brain tumour this week. I know I completely want to go on my own terms if that diagnosis happens to me. Some people cannot live their lives anymore at that point they simply die. Terrible tragic deaths.
I'm so sorry for your loss. God bless you. I'm 17yrs and I have lost lots of loved ones.
@@dakotachristopher5532 thank you so much kind stranger 🤗
I am so very sorry for your loss.😪
@@musicismagic3001 thank you so much 🤗
That guy should not be in hospice. My mom was a hospice physician for 10 years and it took an emotional toll on her. She watched people suffer and she was begged many times to end the suffering. I hope no one ever had to see someone with air hunger. It is the most brutal thing. She passed away after 6 months of suffering a brain aneurysm.
Everyone should have a living will and what they will and will not allow at end of life. Do not force your loved one to make decisions in emotional times.
People should be allowed to depart this life whenever they want to.
What authority does a volunteer have to make medical decisions?
I'm surprised because that is a organization that helps in dying peacefully
That made no sense whatsoever
Murder? Its torture!
I love how he talks about long-term consequences. They're going to be dead in a short time . What long-term consequences is he talking about?
4:06 you can apply that logic to a suicide abuse victim.
He's an arrogant volunteer....it's none of his business how someone choose to leave this earth
He certainly doesn’t seem to have the demeanour you would expect .
Look what happened in canada
Now you dont have to be dying to get prescribed these meds.
There was a lady that was allowed in hamilton to end of life medication simply because she couldnt find an aparmemt and had diabetes and a disability
You can get it way too easily, if they make laws, they need to be strong and the patient HAS to be at end of life
He's likes to watch people suffer, what a sicko.
Oh my God, this guy was her husband Talk about a cradle robber!! Lol
No conspiracy no deal.
Ive been ahospicenurse for 23 years....... i completely disagree.
Some people think we should only do "DIY suicides" and not have a DRs assistance but it's NOT a good idea because taking matters into our own hands can make matters worse. Read Katie Stubblefield's story. She had several good reasons to want to end her life so she shot herself in the face only to survive and need a face transplant etc. There's lots of other stories of Real People who attempt suicide on their own only to end up severely disabled. This is why things like MAiD (medical assistance in dying) and euthanasia should be done by doctors who know what they're doing so there's way more chance it'll be successful for serious health problems that are permanent or terminal people, or that's what I think.
So he's *for* people suffering through endless painful treatments and sickness...but not for relief that patients can CONSENT to? Red flag
Is he against putting pets to sleep?
Ok
Which hospice is he working for so I make sure I never send anyone there ever?
This guy doesn't know what hes talking about
Omg this man is working in the hospice system? Jesus..
Brittany is looking down on Dan and smiling… I’m sure she’s so proud of him. If you don’t know her story, look up Brittany Maynard.
let's just talk about how dude looks like Donald Trump!
😂
''Hey it's overweight Donald Trump'' was the first thing that came to my mind lol.
Go check the Netherlands. because we have been doing this for many decades.
This is not just a simple thing. It requires multiple doctors. It is not killing, it's a person who wants to end their suffering.
We have strict rules towards doctors and how it comes into place. Please go check out the Netherlands how we do it. We have been doing it for decades.
In the Netherlands, doctors kill people with mental illnesses. I don’t want to live in that kind of country. No thanks!
Good for the hospice volunteer for framing the debate as being about something other than Brittany freaking Maynard. Life isn’t all about Dan Diaz and his privileged, entitled spouse.
I don’t know how brain cancer is a privilege
Privilege means having a lot of things and having a lot of advantages in society. Brittany Maynard came from that upper middle class white background. That’s what I’m talking about, I am not saying that it was a privilege to have brain cancer.
Dr Phil condescending .
Most definitely. I agreed with Dr. Phil but he was being so rude to the guy when HE"S the one that invited him on the show to begin with.
Phil is always condescending, rude, and abusive. While he tries to spin the good ole boy drivel...and it doesn't fly as well these days.
He is soul pollution.
Hospice guy bombastic and rude.
@@whyme7996 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's basically assistant in suicide but if you're in pain from a chronic/long/hard illness you should be allowed to go
Who is that volunteer
