I had a hydraulic hose break on me while I was zamming the ice. Scared the crap out of me. The first thing I thought was I ran someone over but I knew better. The mind works fast at times, and slow others.
@Ice Rink Diaries. As a figure skater, I've seen the scenario you discribe happen. The hydraulic fluid is only horrifying because of it's color..but after a session, EVERYONE is supposed to be off the ice when the zamboni comes out. A father with his 2 kids wasn't watching them & I ser the younger of the two, probably around 6 years of age pinned right behind the zamboni against the one goal end, too frightned to move..My blood ran cold..this is an NHL reg size arena & zamboni..they are huge & here's this kid just pinned behind the machine. ( the other kid..prob 10yo was STILL on the ice as well..but down the other end by players bench..FORTUNATLY, we had a really good, experienced driver who didn't panic & knew what to do. So glad your situation worked out ok & ya weren't draggin anyone under there..zamboni's are beautiful and all,& people want to see them but they need to respect them like any other vehicle. I had a hydraulic hose leak on the sweeper/scrubber machine at work back in 2010. Luckily, it wasn't as bad as with what happened to that Zamboni ice resurfacer.

Mike Purdue had an electric 552 blow a fuse halfway thru a cut... had crank up the conditioner manually and have the previous two teams come out and push it off lol

Edit: I was just kidding before, but yeah looked like it blew the main seal in the transmission or the water jacket seals in the motor due to the coolant being burnt and spewing steam out the tailpipe.
It's hydraulic fluid. And if you ran someone over they would get clogged up in the conditioner's (the back end that's on the ice) horizontal auger, if they even made it under the Zam and back that far. The auger back there spins fast but human bones would jam it up.
All Deadpool wanted was to know where Francis was.

One of the funniest Zamboni fails I've seen was that the Zamboni ate one of the pegs during an intermission of a local college game and the peg rolled off the back of the net as it was being moved. They had to pull the Zamboni off and dump the snow to get the peg back before continuing with the ice resurfacing
If you think that’s funny you have some type of learning disability
I think you missed the wings vs islanders game in JLA where they ran over a peg and it messed up the ice

As someone who’s had this as their job for three years, I cringe at these. Most of these aren’t their fault at all. Except for the guy that flat out hit the boards. That shouldn’t happen ever.

Hydraulic lines blowing are my biggest fear. Also new drivers ripping the threshold clean off or burning a hole in the ice. I've never hit the boards though. Not sure what that guy was doing.
I drive an ice resurfacer (Zamboni is the manufacturer) and I agree. Most of these aren't operator error. And yes, he's right, you should never run right into the boards. Best job ever btw.
I've had a radiator hose blow on me on the ice before. Not fun. Hot green coolant all over the ice. Had to tow it off, and then use another Zam to cut off all the frozen/swirly fluid pattern as best I could, but that shit gets EVERYWHERE. Make sure to toss that flood cloth!
3:54 I've had that happen to me with an industrial sweeper/scrubber machine at work back in 2010. It was just a small hole in one of the hydraulic lines, but it's still enough to ruin your day.

I loved driving the Zam. 10 years and 3 rinks worth.
First driving solo shift was a couple days ago.
Started my first flood without opening the propane tanks.
Got about a third around the rink when it sputtered, so I switched tanks.
That lasted about 10 seconds before it totally died (I was running on just what was still in the lines).
Jumped off, killed the water and got the conditioner jacked up, while freaking out and yelling to myself.
Called a coworker and his first question was, "Did you open the propane valves?"
I'm an idiot, and I gave the first rental of the day that was waiting to use the ice quite the show lol
I'm a new Zam driver, 2 months. The other day I did a dry run with the washing pump on..Dont do that :)

Ok so I played roller as I've mentioned in multiple comments sections, so of course we didn't have a Zamboni. But we did have a big floor polisher thingy that did something similar which we jokingly called the Zamboni.

Had the Zamboni fail a few week ago up in Flagstaff, the driver was doing burnout to unstuck the ice jammed under the blades, he took the ice down to the cement in a few spots. Good times were to be had by all, especially the defensemen.

I work at breezy point ice arena. Never ran it dead but have plugged up the conditioner a few times. Never had to manually lift conditioner thankfully. Go wild. One of our loons coaches is Chris Stewart 👍🏼

I had a game on a Monday night and there was a squirt game that was SUPPOSED to be happening before my game, but the Zamboni hit the boards and messed it up. we ended up playing 3 on 3 for no reason on a 20x5 ft. rink and rescheduled our game to the Friday night that week because they couldn't delay our game because of a beer league broomball game. if you don't know what broomball is, look it up. its like polo on ice.
I started playing broom ball because I'd watch the beer leagues before my hockey practices and games. Its pretty fun

The first clip was at Harvard about 3 or 4 years ago.
Back around 15 years ago Harvard had worse happen. The first Zamboni was making ice after the warmups and the battery exploded putting acid on the ice. The second Zamboni was brought out and started around cleaning the ice and removing the acid and was about halfway done when a radiator hose burst pouring antifreeze on the ice. That game ended up being played on the following Tuesday. I recall it was the first women's game for the season and the opponents were from the midwest (Minnesota - Deluth ??) and the girls had to stay in town until the game
The good thing about an oil spill on the ice, is that it doesn't matter if it's slippery!
