- Babies need to progress through a series of developmental milestones before they can even think about taking their first steps. These mini milestones help your baby develop the strength and skills they need to start walking independently.
When you know what the steps to walking are, you can celebrate your baby's success each times they achieve a milestones and know your baby is one step closer to gaining the skills required to walk.
In this video I cover the milestones your baby will achieve on their way to learning to walk (including when babies usual achieve these mini milestones), as well as when babies start walking.

My daughter just turned 13 months and she’s been cruising and walking with support since 11 months! Just waiting for her to take those first steps! ❤❤👣
Did she walking now
Same here too
I son is turning 8 months this Friday and he is super excited about walking
Let me know what milestone your baby has achieved! Also don't forget to get your free 0 - 12 months old developmental milestone chart here:
brightestbeginning.com/12monthmilestones/
My baby is 9 months and she’s now pulling herself to stand. She tries to cruise but falls over and she tries to let go of what she’s holding but she falls down.
Little bub is 10.5 months and after having a hard time starting crawling now he just rushes and is pretty fast, right now he is starting to cruise, he passes from a furniture to another if they are close but doesn’t move a lot in each furniture 😊
My almost 8 month old is cruising and walking with support. She'll walk with us holding her hands and also with a push walker (with a weight so it doesn't go too fast). Her pedi told us to expect independent walking within a couple of months - well before her first birthday - and I'm hoping he's wrong. It's exciting and terrifying!
Mines at the cruising and walking with assistance stage (push walker and hand holding).
Hi @Ebonnee Nelson sounds like your little one is getting stronger in standing and starting to explore. Such exciting times!!
My daughter is currently using the walker and I’m so eager for her to take off on her own. She’s also standing upright on her own trying to get her balance until she drops lol
I looked up this video because my LO started crawling at 5 months and now at 6 months started sitting up and is already pulling herself into standing position. My friends and her doctor said she is going to be an early walker, but this video really put that into perspective for me. Thank you for making these! You've been a big help!
Same mine too I want her to walk early

@@happyparenting700 definitely a thing.
Yeah
I love your videos, thank you so much for uploading and educating FTMs out there.
Glad you like them!
OH MY GOD! I just love you ❤ I was so worried that my baby is not walking but now I know it's not delayed. One more month to go! He has reached the stage of cruising between the furniture. I hope he walks soon!
❤️
I love your videos!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure!!😀
Thank you for the information. Love the breakdown.
Thanks for watching!
i love that all your videos come out at the perfect time for my LO. He just turned 8 months old and he just started standing and walking with assistance (loves walking along our ottoman and couch)!
Thanks so much Johanna! And thanks for sharing! Sounds like you might have an early walker. Exiting and busy times ahead!
So lucky i came across this video, my baby just turned 10 today and before she turn 10 ,she has be trying not to hold anything while standing , hope you walk soon before her birthday 🤔
This came at the right time. My son is able to stand on his own for at least 10seconds😊
My baby now pulls himself up to stand.. He is 8 mo.. So excited for him to take his first step.. Thank you for your video :)
Oh thank God, I searched for this video because my 8 month old is doing the same.
My 7.5 month old is doing all of these things except for walking! We were shocked when she started crawling/pulling to stand at 6 months. So excited for her to start walking! 🎉 We feel like it won't be long now!
That’s awesome!
That's Amazing, my twin babies are in the cruising stage too, they are 7.5 months now
So helpful!
This was super helpful ❤
All of these steps are what my baby is showing right now. I am so excited for him to walk on his own! He is 1yr old. I am worried bc he is not starting to walk now that he is 1yr old
My son just turned 8 months yesterday and he's already at the walking forward with support step 😭 he can do everything else like a pro too and he JUST figured out how to sit up on his own a little over 2 weeks ago 😳
Help 😂 I've got me a wild one 😭
I actually needed this. Just in time! 😊
Hopefully the information was helpful!!!
Thanks for another great video Emma.
My pleasure!
Great video as always! I'm probably the only parent not eager for her baby to walk hahaha
She started crawling at 6 months and I'm so exhausted already! She's 9 months now and we noticed a few weeks ago that she was starting to take a few steps while holding on to the coffee table. We gave her a push walker and she slowly walked through the whole living room, she was so proud! 😇
That is awesome! It's so nice watching them achieve new skills for the first time and how proud they get. I remember when my little one stood up for the first time and he was so busy clapping his hands to celebrate he fell straight back down. So cute!
My. Baby was 7 months old when he pulled into standing and 10.5 months before he could crawl. If anyone has baby who do it a strange way round, you're not alone!
Perfect timing again :-) How do you always know what I need? Love the hair, by the way! My almost 9 month old is "army crawling" because he's nearly 30 lbs already and just can't lift his little body up! He's just started sitting up on his own (he's been able to stay sitting upright, but we'd have to put him there) and is so desperate to follow everyone around that I think he'll be cruising any day now.
Hi Rachel so glad this video has come at the right time for you and your LO. Awesome that he is sitting up on his own and army crawling!!!
Also thanks for the lovely comment!
Awwww my son has the same problem. He's 25lbs 9.5 mo old and prefers to stand and cruise than get on all fours.
Our girl was born at 4kg weight and she was very strong but just didn’t crawl or role till recently and hated tummy time and preferred to sit… then around the 9 month mark she caught up on all and crawls, roles, climbs and cruises. 😅 for me it is a miracle how quick she caught up on the missing milestones. We knew she was healthy and very strong but she seemed perfectly fine with not crawling and roling no matter what we did or where we put her toys and now she is all over the place.
Hi Miss, would like to check if you recommend the "walking wings" harness? Appreciate getting a response from you. Thank you.
My baby is 14 months and he is cuising, walking speedily with support and also taking two or three steps independently and then loses his balance😅 I am eagerly waiting for my baby to walk around independently 😍😍😍
I did sit up for a very long. I didn’t crawl at all but scoot on my bum as a year old. I walked before my 2nd birthday. My brother was crawling at 6 and he would of not walked without assistance until he was before his 2nd birthday. I have special needs and my brother doesn't but we both are late walkers.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Our baby girl learned to crawl and pull herself up to standing in just 1 week at 7,5 months old. Now at 8 months she is starting to cruise. The only issue she is having, is that she sometimes seems to forget she can’t stand without support. She lets go of the coffee table completely and falls, if we are not there to catch her.
Same she pulls herself up when we are sitting on the couch cruising
My 15m (turning 15m tomorrow) has been using a push walker for 2 months now but he hasn't started walking. I noticed that he can't stand up independently by himself yet (always have to pull on something.). Is standing up by himself a milestone before walking? Or is he supposed to just leave both hands of the push walker one day and starts walking? Thank you
Thanks for sharing! Question though....my baby mastered all of these by the time he was 8 months, but he still hasn't tried to walk at 10 months. Any tips for that in between stage?
I’ve been worried about my son he seems to get the milestones early but moves through all of his milestones REALLY slowly. He’s almost 11 months and I’m doing research on walking so I can boost his confidence in himself
Very helpful thanks
Thank you!
Precious information thank u
My pleasure!
This gave me so much relief. My first two kids were standing independently at 9 months and walking by 10 months. My third child is 12 months is not standing independently yet, or taking steps. She does stand (while holding onto something) or cruise a little by using the couch, table or an object for support and let go with one or both hands (while leaning on whatever is supporting her) to grab onto things and clap. What’s crazy is she’ll crawl and then sit up and balance herself on her knees and clap but she has yet to balance herself on her feet without support lol. Now I’m just waiting for her to balance herself on her feet and eventually start taking steps. I know it’s coming soon and I’m excited but I was a bit worried. Thank you for this video! ❤
PS: I just bought my baby a push walker that can grow with her. I’m excited.
Your kids are fast learners Why worried? I have that dont crawl at all… i am worried 13 month but he is cruising and cant catch himself when fallin …
Emma hi thank you very much. From our first month of age till our eleven months thanks so much we appreciate
You are so welcome!
Thank you for your wonderful and educational videos.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment! Hopefully these videos are making parenting a bit easier.
Great video as always! In the process of securing anything that might tip in granddaughter's YES Zone. I do wish I could get me the rolling round rubberized step stool our library uses that stops when pushed down. Reminds me of toddlers learning to ice skate while pushing an upside down 5-gal pail
Thanks Chris! 😁
Thank you
You’re welcome ☺️
I like your all videos as all r informative
My boy started cruising at almost 8 months never crawled but hes yet to walk independently at 12 months
Love your videos thanks for all the amazing info! Our baby is four months and can worm his way to toys on the ground now.
Your new hair cut looks great!
Thanks so much for sharing and your lovely comment. Sounds like you have a mover on your hands. 😀
Hey, Emma, thank you for this video, really helpful for tracking our baby's development.
Quick question: our baby boy started to walk with our hand support, but he tends to turn his left feet outwards. Do we need to be concerned?
We would appreciate your input.

My daughter is almost 10 months old but cannot walk. I hope this video will help her to walk.
Hi, Emma! Thank you for the video, very explicit and helpful, as always.😊Quick question here: our baby girl is 9 months old, it seems she wants to stand, but our furniture is a little high for her. So, she tries to stand by holding onto me or the baby thub. Should we provide her with lower support around her, like lower furniture, for this purpose?
Lower furniture is always better as it is easier for them to pull themselves up and then stand. You could think about removing the cushions of the lounge or couch to make it lower (that’s if you have removable cushions). Hope that helps!
My little cutie has just started standing up while holding onto furnitures. I can tell, he is trying to cruise along them, but is hesitant to do so because he is scared to fall. It's so cute. ❤ He is going to be 12 months old next month 🎉🎉🎉🎉
That’s so good he is staring up. It’s so lovely seeing them work up their confidence and master news skills.
Happy birthday for a months time!
@@EmmaHubbard Thank you for the birthday wishes 😊 And thank you so much for all the advice and the great, useful content you take time to create for us, mothers. We greatly appreciate all your hard work 🙏
My 7 month old is already pulling to stand, and can get himself from laying to sitting on his own, but he's not entirely stable sitting and genuinely seems to dislike doing it. He's also not interested in crawling. We know he can do it because when he wants something across the room there's no stopping him, but he spends 90% of his floor time trying to get his feet flat under him like he's trying to stand. It's obvious he wants to just get up and walk, but we aren't sure if he's developmentally ready and he's obviously well ahead of his milestone timeline. I'm worried he'll get frustrated and learn bad habits or give up all together. What would you suggest we do to help him progress without risking healthy milestones being discarded?
Omg as soon as she said in the video “you’ll notice they will start crawling to the coffee table and pulling themselves to stand” my son did exactly that at the exact time she mentioned it 😅 he is 14 months and getting very very close! Can’t wait till he takes that step
It's such an exciting time!
Thanku so much. Such a informative video 😇
My pleasure 😊
My baby just turned 7months and she recently just pulled herself up to stand. I was shocked.
That's great news! Understand why you were shocked but also great skills!
This is a wonderful video I really appreciate your voluble time. My son was born at 36.5 weeks and he is almost 13 months of age but not yet walking. He is just starting to cruise across the couch to the coffee table but he hasn’t yet pulled himself up from the floor, I place him against the couch to help him. He bypassed crawling, although now he is starting to commando crawl. I think he’s just very slow ne delayed in his milestones but we will hopefully get there eventually.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment! Sounds like he is getting the strength he needs to walk. Great to hear he is cruising. This is a good time to assemble the baby push walker so it is ready for him to use when he has got the strength to walk with support. Also good time to start to place toys at the end of the coffee table to encourage him to cruise further distances. 😀
@@EmmaHubbard thank you very much I will lol
My baby pulled himself to standing a week shy of 6m. Now he’s cruising at 6.5. I watched your video to figure out where to focus next. Guess I’ll be pulling out his baby push walker!
That’s impressive!
My baby is 7 months and 28 days now. He able to pull him up to stand from sitting position and now he already start cruising to the side.. but the thing is he still dont know how to sit up by himself.
i don't have a push walker. is there an alternative to them?
Thank you this was very informative!my son hasn't taken any independent steps yet, he's 12 months and was born at 35weeks 4 days but is able to do everything else. He does however tiptoe through out. So he's cruising while tiptioeing, walks foward with the push walker on his tiptoes and only when he stands still is when he's feet are flat on the ground. Will this delay his walking? and do you have any suggestions on how to discourage the tip toeing or to progess to walking normally?
Thanks a lot for your great videos! My little one is an ex-31 weeker, now 10 month actual age. Your videos give me such a confidence and take away a bit my fears about him reaching his milestones. Now he is standing up and holding with one hand. I would like to know, in average how long the crawling thing should happen? Little boy prefers standing up with support than crawling around 😬
Hi Emma. Thank you for your video. My 7 months old daughter, she's standing and let go her hand. Do I need to encourage her to walk?
Can you please make a video like this on twins??.
Can you also make a video on twin growth and development please??
Hello Emma, our son is about to turn 16 months old, and is still not walking by himself. He walks pretty well with his walker, but shows no signs of standing up by himself. Should we be worried? Or doing something different to help him?.
Great vídeo and adorable haircut:):)
Thanks so much Pri!
My baby is 11 months & is using a walker he still has some balance issues but hes almost at his first steps on his own
Hey Emma,
My 5 month old LO keeps trying to push himself up while we practice sitting. He’s turned from front to back and vice versa a couple of times, but he hates being on his tummy - so he just won’t turn anymore, and if he does, he screams bloody murder. I’m concerned that he won’t be able to develop properly if he doesn’t get on his tummy and learn to scooch and crawl. What do I do to help him enjoy tummy time? I’ve watched your tummy time video but it doesn’t seem to work with him.
My nephew does all of these and has walked using our hands as assistance he can also stand independently he can climb onto the furniture and get out of his baby walker but refuses to walk even if we try and keep him from crawling and hold him so he can walk he just falls, when before he would put in the effort to walk with our hands as assistance
Hi Emma, thank you for your videos.
A friends baby could only sit at 7.5months. If we keep a toy a little from him, he can't stretch to pick and would cry like he had pain on his back. He could get on all fours that's his hands and legs as though he wants to crawl because his hand seem weak. He couldn't put up. He could not also bear weight on legs at 8months nor pull up to stand. What could be the problem and a possible solution? Thank you
My baby is at 14 months and is at the cruising stage. I’m kind of concerned because her cousin, who just turned one a few days back, can walk independently. As much as I’m happy for my nephew, I do want to see my own daughter walk independently too 😢
Comparison is the thief of joy. All babies are unique 😊
@@helenlucka you’re right 💜
My baby is 23 months old but not walking independently. But can stand .
Please any advice
My eldest started walking at 7 1/2 months. Both my daughters started around 8-9 months. My youngest just turned one and is just now cruising.
Same with mine, should I be worried 😧
@@ogechiekeanyanwu6174 every child is different and walks at their own pace.
Emma my daughter just turned 1 but doesn’t want to stand/pull to stand /walk. She somehow avoids bearing weight in her feet:( she was born full term and no issues… Whats the reason for that? Could it be tendon/feet/hip issues? When would you recommend early intervention physical therapy?! Thanks a lot!! Your haircut is adorable:)
Did you ever find out an answer? :o
Thanks Emma. Are 1) standing independently and 2) sitting back down by bending knees prerequisites to walking?
Hi @Ulalegna great question! Standing independently is required before walking. A baby needs to have the skills to stand still and be stable in this position before they are confident enough to lift one leg off the ground and shift their weight to one leg.
My little buddy is all about walking. Trying to encourage him to crawl always leads to full on siren cry. 😅
Awesome he is walking with help and using the trolley. Hopefully he gets more confident using the trolley and uses that to get around independently!!
Same!
Same!!!
Our daughter completely skipped pull to stand, and when straight to standing with support, and now cruising
My 10 month baby is now using the walker but he cannot make turns. He can only walk straight. Is there anything I can do to teach him to make turn? Thank you in advance!
I love all your videos!!! I'd love to know how to help my baby (9 months) learn how to clap and wave. He is well ahead in everything else but refuses to clap his hands, his arms go stiff if you try! He is happy to tap your hands and bang other things together though.
Same here...my son is also 9 months old and refuses to clap his hands...
Hi @just me! and @Pooja Rangan babies learn these skills through modelling. So I would recommend every time you leave the house or room you do a massive wave and say bye bye and when your little one plays with toys or puts a toy in a container you clap with your hands and cheer. Your little one will soon learn these skills!
@@EmmaHubbard thank you so much 💖 we will keep trying.
I'm currently looking back on my (gross motor) milestones and it turns out I missed all of them by like 3-5 months. I do wonder if this was considered normal 20-25 years ago or if the doctor made a mistake.
My baby is 4 months old and she pulls herself up to stand . She holds my hand and lifts herself up to stand and wants to walk with support, although she does not have the necessary back support yet to stand independently. What should i do to help her to take the next steps?
My baby is 15 months and still not walking lol
She’s met all of her other milestones and has great balance, just doesn’t want to take steps. getting anxious!!
How has she been doing by now ? My daughter us 15mnths , i feel like shes kind of afraid to walk on her own
Hi.. i like your videos...My 12 month old is ahead of crusing.. bt he doesnt stand without support. Sometime i make him stand leaving hands free... bt only after few seconds he sits down.. may be he is hesitant to stand widout support.. plz suggest/ make video to help baby take 1st step
What is considered a first step? It may sound like a dumb question but my son will walk a distance to me like one ow two steps then run so is that considered a first step or is a first step just walking even when not walking to anyone or anything?
Off topic but i love your top!
Thanks so much!!!
My baby turned 9 months old on date 7th of this month and she is already starting to take her many steps, without any walking support.i'm just guessing she'll start running next month.😅
I think my baby skipped the crawling part 100%, now she is is 8 months and going crazy with wanting to pull herself up everywhere!!! She also do cruising on the couch if i have something she wants haha.
She enjoy standing in crib and laughing.
Is it possible that should could be walking when she is 9 months with that temperament? Haha
My baby is doing the standing and pulling herself up and she’s only 7 months. It’s both exciting and terrifying. She definitely can’t get down without a butt flop though 😅
My baby just turned 8 months and is reaching to stand and standing with support 🫣
My 15 month old is doing all of that, she is scared of falling thou. She also goes to & down the stairs. Hoping to see the little steps soon 😊
Sounds like she is getting close!
My baby is 7 months and already standing from sitting without holding on to anything 😮
That’s awesome
My baby sister started standing up without holding anything or us holding her she started to stand when she was 9 months know she’s a year and sane only took 5 steps and when she stands she stands for 10 min then she loses her grip and she falls over but when she falls over she laughs like crazy
Hi, my baby girl started to lift herself up on her feet just at 7 months, with legs a little appart. So far she did all of the steps you mentionned up until that between 6 and 7 months. Isn't it too quick ? I don't push nor invite her to do so, i'd prefer she takes the time because i'm afraid she'll have a bad fall if she's going too quick. It's constant watching these days ! Thanks
Each baby is unique and achieve their milestones at different times. It just sounds like your little one's gross motor skills are a little ahead. She will be fine. As her muscles continue to strengthen and her balancing skills continue to develop she will progress to walking when she is ready. Just know that all babies fall when learning to walk and stand but it generally does not hurt them.
Hi Emma, thanks for making this informative video. I had a question about baby walkers, some say that walkers should not be used but you have mentioned push walker. Should we provide babies walkers to help waking?
Hi! That's a great question. Baby walkers are actually different to push walkers. I don't recommend baby walkers, but love push walkers 🙂. You can hear my thoughts on baby walkers and why I don't recommend them in this video: czcams.com/video/nG-8gvHamlQ/video.html
And here's one I did on push walkers: czcams.com/video/4yIOSrxcaCw/video.html
Hope that helps!
@@EmmaHubbard great, thanks so much 🙏🏼
Hi Emma, your videos have been very helpful. I however have a late pre walker she has crawled from 12mo and standing up supported and cruising around 16mo. She won’t use a push walker but will walk 1-2meters with us holding both hands. Should she start seeing a Physio or OT as she is now 18mo and there’s is not much more progress to push walking and walking and standing up independently.
My daughter too same... Any advice from Emma. Please
Hi my daughter also same. She is 18 months old but still she didn't waking.
I always love your videos! At the end of your videos, I think you should confidently say “See you next week” rather than meekly saying “Hopefully see you…”
My little one is starting to cruise on furniture and push things around while standing so this video was right on-point! Many thanks!
Hi Sarah, thanks for the vote of confidence! I will definitely say that at the end of my videos in the future! 😁
So glad this video came at the right time for you and your little one!
The vtech push walker is too fast. He can cruise from one furniture to another but slowly. Donot know what to do
My baby stands on his toes. He is 12+ months old. How should I encourage him to walk?
10.months just trying to stand up
My baby have been cruising all round the house since 9months and walking with support from one furniture to the other, he just turned 1, my fear with baby push walker is that people usually comment on reviews that it slips off atimes or run off from babies as it doesn't grip firmly based on the material on the wheels. The link u shared for a particular brand u recommended I clicked wasn't the particular one on Amazon here. I fear potential accident from baby push walker
Hi @Mrsedo I completely understand. I do find putting a weight (bag of rice or a potato) in the tray of the wooden push walkers helps to slow the walker down and prevent it tipping over. That might help.
My kid started cruising by 19 months and he is 2 year old now but still walks on bed not floor.. can you help..
Will he walk on floor and how much time he ll take as per your experience
Maybe you can talk in one of you re video about potty training,i'd love that😍
Great idea. Will hopefully get to this soon
Would love this!
I let my 12 month old hold on to my finger with one hand as she walks. I only do it when she asks for it. Is this helping her develop her balance and confidence?
My daugter is 1 year and 5 months, she walks with support, and walks up and down along the furnite and walks with her walker, however she refuses to walk without support. Seems like she is scared. She only started sittinf by herself at 9 months and started crawling at 12 months. Should I be worried?
Hi, my baby is 8 months. She still puts anything she can get hold of in her mouth all the time. Is that okay? When might she stop doing that?
