Stuart, Your approach is first class, what a great channel! I really believe you are trailblazing with the quality of your videos (it's more like a mini tv programme). Precise, concise, systematic, informative and always upbeat and entertaining, thanks for your excellent work! We all note your extensive use of the multi-purpose pump clamps, they're great assistants, and they never take a tea break, couldn't live without them! lol
Wow, thanks! Very kind words - much appreciated!
Heâs not wrong! I love the intro scene, when the brush head falls off!! Hah, you have a good media eye (or whatever the term is). Love it.
100% agree
Now i notice several gates in my neighbourhood all crossed braced wrong
Mines will be correct thought đ€Ł
I could not agree more. Excellent. Thank you.
the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. czcams.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
Cross bracing explanation was perfect, never thought it like that before...
Glad it helped
Agreed. Superb explanation.
Yes I agree completely. Stuarts model of the bracing principle was the best explanation I have ever seen. Its something I always used to struggle with (ie which way they should go). Its amazing how often you see gates and doors fitted the wrong way round - quite often in TV and film sets lol.
This alone deserves a sub, cheers mate
Did you screw the cross braces at all?
I learned more about carpentry in this video than I have in 7 years of my father in law yelling at me about it đ
You're not wrong, this man is a genius. He's made it look so easy. Time to build a wooden spice tray.
I've watched hundreds of carpentry videos This has to be the best video I've ever watched. Thank you I'm going to make my gate soon
Brilliant explanation about cross bracing!!
I now have some superb knowledge to make my gate.
Thank you!
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite DIY channels. Well edited, well shot, well explained, no unnecessary chatter. Short, sweet, to the point, with a bit of a laugh. Keep it up!
Thank you very much!
Just finished ours and wish we had your guide. Keep up the videos Iâm hooked. If you run out of ideas youâd be surprised how much your audience would love âback to basicsâ guides about the basics of woodwork, diy and electrics.
Thank you. I'm sure I'll be covering lots of 'back to basics' - especially when the summer is over and the weather forces me inside!
No one else does it as good as you do. You explain what needs to be done and then explain why. With your expertise as a retired engineer, you make a great teacher give the necessary information for your videos. No wonder you named it "Proper DIY" since everything is done in the Proper manner! Two Thumbs Up!! Great video.
Well thank you very much for your comments - I try
Thanks for a great video. I like your no nonsense approach. I need a new garden gate and now I know just how to do it!!
Thanks again.
Just wanted to say thanks again for your brilliant video. I watched the video a couple of times and with no real carpentry skills or experience, I built my parents a new gate over the weekend. A great sense of achievement.
Not a DIY person normally but I need a gate and want to do it myself. This video gave me all the info I need on materials and techniques. Really helpful and confidence building. Thank you.
Glad I could help
It must be said that your production quality is on point: one wouldn't be able to tell you've only 'just' started the channel. So far I have really enjoyed your more engineering-based approach compared to other DIY CZcamsrs; it's just something I identify with more than the "let's slap it together and see if it works" mentality. Thank you for the effort you clearly put in; I hope you'll see the channel growth you deserve.
Thank you so much. I try to make things clear and naturally come at things from an engineering angle just because I do. I'm glad you think I am different to the others.
Your advice and tips and technique allowed me to confidentially build a new garden gate without any issues. Thanks to you and your time.
Iâm average to useless at DIY but enjoy watching how effortless you make it seem. Channels like yours can be a saviour to us wannabes
It's just education (from CZcams) and practice so start slowly on easy stuff and before you know it you'll be tackling everything!
Love this video. Super clear and really well explained. Now off to build my gate.
From a mid 20s first time home owner, your videos have been absolutely fantastic! No end of help, thanks for your time, knowledge and for creating them. Jake
No problem. Nice to pass things on
Ive now made one of these for each side of my house. Feel quite proud as im new to diy, every job builds confidence. Really appreciate the quality of the video, definitely the best ive managed to find.
Just that little model cross bracing demonstrates how good this bloke is - Knows his stuff and can get get it through to idiots at this like me. Great video, really great
Just watched this
...
As im about to do this
...
Stu, you are incredible!
Love the cross bracing explanation. In 63 Female and I'm going to try Make this gate. Thank you
Your advice was spot on, thank you so much. I had a large gate to make (1.6m wide), and had never done one before (not even a small one). I followed your instructions and to my amazement (I'm not the best at DIY) it came out dead right and looks fantastic. đ
Hi! I want to say thank you for making this tutorial. We recently built a large raised garden bed and used your video as our inspiration to build the door - it was our first ever door build and your instructions are incredibly easy to follow. Thank you again!
Love the method of shimming the frame and clamping it to the post.
As everyone says, your model is great. I know that Iâll have that image in my mind anytime I try to think of the right way to do it.
Also, given that it must have taken you a while to make the model, I appreciate even more that you stuck to the point when using it, with no waffle. Great videos !
Well thank you very much!
Really efficient way of getting the hinges fitted in the correct place without wrestling a gate at the same time! I work as a mechanical engineer and it was a very nice demo on the bracing, the best visual explanation you could do. đđ»
Well thank you very much!
Just brilliant, thank you Stuart for taking the time to make these clear, concise and very professional TV standard videos, it really is appreciated by this DIYer đđ
Best explanation of diagonal bracing on the internet.
Just came across your videos and I really like them. You explain things in such an easy manner, and explain in detail so that a lay person can understand. You are a grate teacher. My Grandfather was a master carpenter. You remind me of my father he also spoke in a easy manner and could explain things so easily. Even though he was not a carpenter by trade he custom made all my kitchen cabinets for my house (I had purchased a fixer upper that had had a fire and the kitchen was completely gutted). That was 30 years ago. I have his tools and a small shed.
Incredibly useful; I knew my gate needed replacing but I just wasn't quite sure how to approach it. Your videos are so clear and to the point. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Great video, I'm working through multiple jobs on a home we bought 5 years ago. Your videos are exceptionally good. A big thank you. đ
Stuart, just brilliant my friend and you are saving me a shed load of money and teaching me new skills. Really straightforward and common sense approach and great quality production too. Iâll be getting into more if your stuff now that Iâm retiredâŠ
Write it on the saw... What a good idea! (now where's my market pen?)
Need to go and buy another - and then loose that one!
So after much research I watched this video. Absolutely spot on and I followed your video to the letter. It saved me ÂŁ100s buy making my own instead of buying. So much satisfaction every time I look at it. Thank you. đ
wondunderful, a very practical, and experience person, guiding us, which is what we need, as nobody knows every thing, I would have measure diagonally across the whole frame for squareness, as I am unable to get dead straight wood, a lot of it is like a banana nowadays
Thank you!. I found your channel by accident and subbed after 30 seconds. Your clarity and presentation is first class and thank you thank you thank you for not doing the "just take your timber to your ÂŁ5000 table saw then run it through your ÂŁ1250 rebate machine and finish off with the ÂŁ3000 auto finisher and there you are a homebuilt gate simply made". Most people will eventually end up with the tools you use but most importantly you show HOW things are done clearly and you approach things in a thoughtful way. I've never seen anyone explain cross bracing so clearly.
Well thank you very much for your comments - very kind. However much I would like to have every expensive power tool made, I don't and neither do average DIY'ers. So I think it's important to show that things can me made with the chisel from Wilco or the screwdriver from the market as that's what I have and I don't think I alone.
Simply the best presentation on garden gates yet. I'm old and unskilled, but you've made it simple to where I actually believe that I can do this one. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You must have done filming professionally in a previous life, the camera work, presentation, editing and information is the best I have seen on You Tube, and I have seen a lot!!! Thanks for your time Stuart its a pleasure to watch...
No, I'm afraid not but I do try to show things clearly and make it entertaining as well as giving tips that I have come across. It's nice that you have noticed - keeps me going!
Thank you so much Stuart! Your video is great and has taught me so much that i wasn't aware of before. The way you explain things is so simple and easy to understand. I'm now going to put my new found knowledge to the test and build a gate! Many thanks again and i hope you and your family have a great Christmas and New Year!
What a smashing DIYer you are. Covering almost everything one might want to do in and around the house outside with such detail, patience and quality of videos and editing is top notch. đđœđđœđđœđđœ
I love how simple your explanations and techniques are. Another great video! You really are becoming an excellent point of reference for my DIY projects! Thank you đđ»
Thank you for the great feedback
After 20 years in the roofing trade, I was surprised how many tips I picked up from this video!!
I only came here to check the direction of the cross bracing.
Such straight forward, no bullshit information is hard to find and as others have said, your explanation of the bracing direction was spot on and it's so clear in my mind now.
It's worrying that I occasionally hear chippies arguing about this when your explanation makes it so obvious. Great work
Well thank you very much - much appreciated.
Wow.... LOVE the brace demonstration! Great video!
I made my new garden gate using this video; first 'big' wood project! Thank you
Thanks to this excellent video, I have just built my first gate and Iâm chuffed at how sturdy it is. Your instructions, as always were easy to follow. Thanks so much Stuart, love the channel. đđ
What a gem of a channel! Your approach chimes with mine - ie based on sound engineering. I am just about to make a gate for my daughter and have picked up some great tips.
Thank You
Welcome aboard!
Pleasure to watch a craftsman at work.. clean precise and easy to understand.
Great video. Loved the model explaining the cross braces.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your work is amazing! Thank you for the great and detailed explanation for everything! â€
I've watched several of your videos and this, like the others, is really clearly explained and you include very helpful tips which save a lot of time and make installation so much easier.
Just thinking of doing it myself as I love wood working. I got to say, this garden door, maybe is simple but outstanding quality and finish.
Excellent video. I skipped through a few vids and found this one. It's easily the best. All the info is here, no need to look up anything else. 10/10
Thank you. The whole video was great and the cross bracing explanation finally cleared things up for me. Thanks again.
Your production quality is amazing - and for that, I've just subbed. Loved the mock up of your door, it's always nice being able to understand the theory behind why we do things a certain way when it comes to woodworking. You've clearly put a lot of effort into the video - please keep it up!
Thank you very much - welcome aboard
Outstanding video, literally could not want for a better explanation of door strength vs ease of build. Are told vs manual approach to keep things fun. Now can't wait to build my gate this weekend!
I've said it before but I'll say it again. I absolutely love this channel. Content is top notch. The way you explained the cross bracing with the little model made it all seem so clear. Keep up with the amazing content.
Thats very kind of you to say that!
I wanted to say the same đđ€ȘđđŒ
What a great video! You are a natural teacher. I am about to build my first gate and watched a lot of videos. Most fly through the critical parts and don't do a good job of explaining the science behind the design. This is exceptional. Liked and subscribed!
Best techniques, explaining and easy to follow instructions đđ. I'm excited to do my first gate tomorrow đȘ. Gracias
Really like the engineering examples you include in your videos Stuart. Example of this cross member makes great sense after you explained. I always wondered as I only did wooden garage gates recently and just followed another CZcamsrs video but he never explained why it was done that way.
Thanks mate and hi from Ireland again.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hello Ireland!
Excellent. Thank you. Beautiful work. I collected my lumber last night. â€
This has me excited for building my fence and gate. Thank you so much x
Excellent tutorial, thatâs another job I have been putting off. I built the present gate Mabey seven years ago and itâs just rotting away. Looking forward to this project in the new year. Thanks đđ
Glad it helped
Always good to watch your videos, even if the topic matter is not immediately relevant - Iâm not going to need a gate any time soon, but the cross brace explanation and use of shims for fitting are great takeaways for me today. Thanks. G
Glad you enjoyed it
Incredibly useful as my new future home needs two new gates ...brilliant love these
Glad to stumble upon this channel. What a gem! Lovely job. Will be trying this exactly as you suggest at the weekend.
Much appreciated for this video, the demonstration of the cross bracing was perfect, and well explained.
I need to amend my garden gate, great tips!
Appreciate the video, knowledge share!
Glad it helped
Outstanding, I've built a few gates in my years. But this is hands down the best method...I've learnt a few things from your video. Keep them up.
Glad it was helpful!
You just make it look easy! True craftsman. Love your work.
Thank you very much!
Yet another top quality production. You should be on the telly! :-) I love the explanations and the demo using the mock-up of the gate. Fantastic stuff.
Well thank you very much.
Best how to gate build video! Now I think I can do it myself! Thank you
Just the video I have been looking for ! About to add a gate to my garden fence project and was unsure about it's construction for optimum strength , side clearances etc (45 degree braces orientation were going to be a bit of a lucky guess, not now, and the 'wee model gate' was class)! Cheers 'Proper DIY'. I am a toolmaker and tend to over-engineer everything but this gate is pretty much as how I would like mine to end up. Even the Hook & Band hinges are the same as I was intending to use because of the weight of my gate (I was going to use three 16" ones) Much obliged and I will subscribe and keep an eye out for future projects. Thanks again for the clear and easy to follow video. Kenny, Dundee, Scotland.
Best Iâve seen on building a gate with many great tips and explanations. Thank you.
This video was so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and post it. Much appreciated.
This worked a treat. I followed the instructions and ended up with a strong professional looking gate. The gate width was 805mm which I couldn't find anywhere. Many thanks.
Excellent job thank you Stuart. I was able to create my overlap-joined gate, clad with framed spruce T&G panelling, with (correct) cross braces. One gazillion brownie points from the Mrs.
Beautiful finished fence gate. Love it. Awesome
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant video Stuart.. Thank You. Iâve got a couple of gate projects this summer and this will be very useful. đđŸ
Glad it helped
Stuart, you should have way more subscribers your channel is excellent ! Humble yet very qualified, Iâm a sole trader as a handyman and your advice/knowledge has assisted me loads resulting in very happy clients. Thank you.
Thats really good to hear and thank you very much for your comments. I hope gradually the subscribers will increase
I like the overlap design on the slats (Cladding). I Will have to consider that when doing the next fence.
This is the best gate video Iâve watched, not because you built the best gate but you took the time to explain how and why.
Well thank very much - much appreciated
Great video, i am in the middle of a career change to carpentry and this was great to watch with some good tips. Thanks Mark
Thank you. I'm sure You'll enjoy it
Excellent video, you're explanation of the building process was direct and precise. Thank you again for sharing your videos. God bless đ
Wow! I learned a lot about making joints more solid and professional. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent. Iâve always struggled with woodwork and this video simplifies it! Happy building engines or welding but wood..... Shiver me tim... oh.
Thanks. That's funny because I'm the opposite!
Thank you, a super explanation and demonstration for us all to learn from.
Excellent you are so confident and such a good teacher to follow and listen to. Bit respect to you.
I appreciate that!
I had to always check up on which way the bracing was fixed. Now I know, thanks to your explanation. Thank You Very Much
Been watching a bunch of videos and this one continues to be the most helpful. Thank you sir!
Glad it was helpful!

Superb. Easily one of the best DIY videos Iâve seen. Clearly explained and very helpful for my project, thank you Stuart.
No problem, thanks Neil
Excellent video of 'how to make a garden gate', i knew some of it like the angle bracing which you explained brilliantly and more easier/better than i have seen in other videos, so thank you for your instructional build and keep up these very educational videos.
Stay Safe,
Barry (Wirral)
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome. Everything I needed to know. Thank you!
What a brilliant guy, loving this channel, thank you for sharing all your knowledge.
Glad you enjoy it!
You made it so easy for an average diy person like me.i was hesitant to build a gate myself but this video has given me the confidence to go ahead. Thank u
I'm so glad I have helped
Fantastic video gives me all I need to know on my next project thank you
That was a really excellent and useful presentation. Thank you. (I have no questions - thatâs how comprehensive, yet concise, that your presentation was đ.)
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ProperDIY I did enjoy it. But, I donât watch this âcontentâ for entertainment - I do watch watch it for education, and you nail it.
Fantastic - donât you just love tools and making stuff - great video
Yes, thanks
