Excellent Video! I think you are correct across the board. I'm hoping for all of them to make it but... It's a tough business.

Thank you! Fingers crossed 🤞 It'd be really great to see all of these on the road this year.

Nimbus is the one I am watching. It hits on all the points I want in this type of vehicle. Motorcycle endorsement not needed, local to me HQ, 2 person, enclosed cabin option, heat and street legal. (Not a golf cart) Open cabin in summer. Will charge on my solar setup. (Like my electric lawn tractor.) Biggest of all not make in China IMHO the biggest advantage they have is also their biggest challenge. They are HQed in the heart of the (so called) big 3. If they can hold near their price point they will sell a lot IF they can hit the right market. In the US mid-west that would be the summer great lakes communities. Boat owners with some disposable income who are using golf carts but are limited by street legality and don't want the current offering of 3 wheel motorcycles.

Hi Kaz, you have some great videos, thanks for the good work! I found your channel via one of Chad's from Drive the Lightning.
There's just one thing that I in your place would make different (my personal taste and opinion), which is turning down a bit the volume of the background music compared to the volume level of your commenting. Before changing anything in your next videos you might ask other's opinions though, I am not representative for any audience! 😉

Hi Markus, I'm glad you like the videos! I love DTL so I'm happy to hear that you watch their videos too.
Thank you for the feedback! That's something that I've been tinkering with. I felt the background music in some of my previous videos was too quiet but I think you're right, this one was a bit too loud. I appreciate you letting me know. I'm curious, what kind of device were you watching the video on?

Faraway Future doesn't stand a chance. They don't offer anything that you can't get from Lucid at a lower price.
Nimbus needs a manufacturing model that is profitable in low volume since its vehicle will always be niche.
Aptera will make it to production, but their long term survival relies on development of a more popular four wheeled vehicle sharing the brand's DNA. If Lightyear survives long enough to start producing the Lightyear 2, and they start to sell it in North America, that will become much harder.
Canoo has a chance, but needs to offer more interior layouts to broaden their vehicle's appeal. Yes, some people just want a minivan.

    • @EVswithKaz
      @EVswithKaz  Před rokem

It sounds like Canoo is going to be focusing more on fleet and commercial customers in the near future. I’m guessing it would be pretty easy for them to set up one of their vehicles with a more traditional seating layout.
I agree that Aptera will have to do something more mainstream for long term success.
Faraday has had so many setbacks, I want them to make it but yes, what can they offer that a cheaper Lucid can’t? 🤷‍♂️

I'd much rather have a Light Year for the price of the Faraway and it is already in production.

Yeah and you’d get some free energy with the Light Year ☀️

I have two Apteras on reservation but not familiar with Canoe. That looks like the vehicle I had envisioned as a self driving vehicle you summon with your phone like Uber. I expected it would not have a front or back but that both would look the same and it could go in either direction. One difference is I expect you would board it from the middle where doors would part like a subway car to let you in.

There’s a company called Zoox that sounds a lot like what you’re describing. I don’t know much about it but it looks neat.

@@EVswithKaz Maybe due to the financial crisis they are experiencing? Looks like they are struggling with production financing, the #savesion campaign was looking positive initially but seems to have run out of steam now. Their advisors have been telling them to focus on being a supplier for their vehicle solar panels. Seems a shame to have come all this way without getting the vehicle into production.

With due respect to the immense efforts of all those working on this, I am not optimistic for any of them. I am more familiar with the Nimbus and Aptera because I am trying to build something similar. For the Nimbus, I think they have got their battery sizing wrong. Unless they are using some really advanced energy storage technology, 9 kWh of capacity (stated on their website) is NOT portable with one hand. Current mature technology (including the necessary mechanical protection) is about 160 Wh/kg. This means a 9 kWh battery is 56 kg. As for the Aptera, it tried and failed once back in 2006. If they haven't learned from their past mistakes, they may fail again. Or maybe it was just that the time was not right back then.
So to answer the question in the video description, my opinion is that they will fail to live up to the hype.

It has I believe it has 4 batteries for full range and it requires 2 to be functional. It's not a single large battery unless you upgrade to the One S which has a fixed battery that can't be removed.

Posted to Reddit at r/ApteraMotors. I am really excited by the potential on display here, and hope that the reduction in CO2 gases in the atmosphere will begin a downward trend before long. In the US, light transportation represents about 27 % of the total we are producing now, so it can start to have a small but significant impact. The Kyoto accords, even with the cheating that has happened is bearing fruit, and we are on track to have the ozone hole closed sometime in the 2060s.

@@EVswithKaz I spent much of my career working on environmental issues. I wrote the first proposal to the US EPA for a non global warming refrigeration system under the SNAP (significant new alternative program) program. I was in Kuwait, working with the Kuwaiti EPA during the fires.
I am still passionate about all aspects of environmental remediation.
