Best Punching and Texas Rig Setups for Bass in Heavy Matted Cover

- Heavy cover offers a place to flip and punch a Texas rig for big bass. A good punching setup is key to success in these situations. Florida native and professional angler Jesse Mizell knows his way around heavy cover, and he shares everything you will need to catch bass out of the thickest cover you can find on your favorite grassy fishery.
Heavy line and a heavy rod are crucial to your success while punching. Mizell prefers an 8-foot XH rod paired with 65-pound braided line. On the business end, Mizell selects the lightest weight possible that allows him to get through the cover. This requires going heavier than a 1-ounce weight at times. Pairing a streamlined bait with the correct size heavy-duty flipping hook keeps his presentation compact for efficient punching in and out of the cover. And he talks through why he has several different baits and what tricks he uses to get them in and out of the cover easier.

There were a bunch, you know.

Good stuff Jesse! 👊🏼💯🇺🇸
Thanks for the tips my friend!
Sook helpful excited for opener this year
I have kept a sharpies in my tackle bag for many years. You can use them to enhance or make a quick color change to your soft plastics as well. I've even colored hard baits black for a more pronounce silhouette in low light scenarios.
I like spraying down my speed worms when im running them on top through pads or floating vegetation. The slickness definitely helps.
ive been doing this the past 2 weeks in north louisiana works well
Definitely works here on the CA Delta 👍
Last spring/summer I flipped the craw upside down basically and I feel I got more bites. I haven't did a comparison but it seemed to trigger more bites
Good video.
Man👏👍👍....them 13 ninja craws are not bad😁👍
HOT TIPS"-THANKS!
How to fish with punchrig in heavy matted cover in winter season ?
Same set up with slow action?
Cool. What knot do you like? Snell? Other?
I love the Tokyo rig for punching, you don’t have to rip that weight out of their mouth which can pop their jaws open and you don’t get a hook in them. With a Tokyo rig they only get the bait not the weight.
All do respect & appreciation to everyone that does these videos, but Jeff Sprague, Gerald Swindle, Greg Hackney, Ott, KVD & Jason Christie are hands down the best teachers & I learn more from those guys than by far anyone else on this channel!! Absolutely Throw in Jacob Wheeler too!!
I would add Scott Martin to the list. Also Brian latimer has done a video for wired but also does well at instructional vids.
@@hartleydaniel2044 Agree 100% with SM. Not seen a lot of B. Lat. I’ll check him out!! Always appreciate a chance to learn & get better!! Thanks man!!
@@JustinCaudill14 ole Scott learned from one of the best fir sure. The fishing and how to inspire and teach others.
@@hartleydaniel2044 You damn right!! I can’t believe I left Roland Martin out of my list. I should be banned from the opening tournament in the east Kentucky clubs!! Haha
@@JustinCaudill14 might as well through Bill Dance in there while we are on the subject.
Does he tie snell knots?
Learned something new from Brain Latimer put a t stop in ur weight to stop it from sliding back down and knocking ur hook out of the fishes mouth after they bite
That's a good tip.
Florida is already throwing mid west summer patterns! 🤣
Here in Canada near Toronto we still have hard water and fishermen are still ice fishing. Large and small mouth bass have a closed season until after the spawn and the bass have left their beds. Season here does not open until the third weekend of June. I can’t wait to be out on the St. Lawrence river and Lake Ontario fishing big smallies. I wish I was down in Florida punching the carpets. Have a great day and happy fishing.
What's the point of the bead if you're pegging the weight?
Did you not see the gap between pegs and hook lol. There's sliding room there for the weight to hit bead
It's always fascinating to me how most pros use 65lb braid. I've always use 50lb for past 15 years and never had a break off. Just my thoughts, I probably will regret not using 65lb one of these days
You see less and less guys going with 65 pound braid. 50 is good unless you got a big stout rod and extra heavy cover with a shot at an 8-10 pounder.
I’ve been throwing 30lb powerpro even on my 8ft Heavy flipping rods with 1-2oz weights and haven’t lost one yet. I’ve ripped tree branches out with 30lb braid lol.
How many times can this man say you know
You know You know You Know You know You know You Know
I think we should know
man one minute you tell him out fishing in Florida and then you're like well you might want to use this hook if you're up north where you fishing Florida or up north?
You know !
👍🏼👍🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Anybody count how many times he said "you know"
Now you don't HAVE to spray your baits.... but it helps
Just like you dont need 65 lb braid, lol.
He keeps asking if we know
Every time he says "you know", alternate between the like and dislike button to see where you end up, you know?
You know, you know?
