- I needed a bench for fine woodworking but i didn´t want to dedicate the space to another fullsize bench
so i built this mini tabletop workbench - also great for smaller shops!
thank you ROCKLER for sponsoring this project-the vise with the built-in benchdog is awesome!
visit them at www.rockler.com
i used maple, plum and (i think)mahogany for this mini bench.
the height is perfect and the weight is still light enough to set it up with ease or to take it with you on a job.
I got inspiration from this build here:

I built this mini workbench because i needed a bench for fine woodworking projects that doesn´t take up too much space and is portable so i can use it outside. (summer is around the corner!!!)
also i found that for precise work like cutting dovetails it is more comfortable to raise the workpiece up quite a bit.
this minibench is great for planing and detail work without giving me backpain...it would also be a great solution if you have a smaller shop of need to work at a jobsite.
from entertaining prospective , it is boring because no info tell me in the video what are you doing .however i like the mime bench
Laura Kampf, danke, dass ich an dieser so estetisch ausgeführten Arbeit, samt PASSENDER musikalischer Untermalung, teilhaben durfte.
Great job Laura ;-)
Respekt!
Just fantastic Laura (as always). Can I borrow your idea as it will be my first project when I get home!!! I love it
It is so satisfying to watch someone who is a master of their craft execute a well thought-out plan. Thanks for making these videos!
Was about to say the same, awesome job. The skill & awesome tools.... master crafter right there.
After watching the video advert i was still skeptical. But when i finally downloaded the plans czcams.com/users/postUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG i was very impressed. The whole plan was just as you said in the video. Thank you very much. I now have a large and valuable collection for my woodworks. This is great!
"No idea" is the most common type of wood I use.
hahaha!
The most common wood I use is the leftovers of a commercial crate company. lol
loads of no idea trees where I live...
Smü I have alot of that no idea around my place too
Smü I buy most of my wood from the scrap bin at the lumber yard or from the big bucket of unlabeled pen blanks
Very cool! I'll have to try that technique of drilling through tape for gluing in dowels.
Oh, and next time the lumber store guy asks what kind of wood I want I'm gonna say "no idea" and see if they have it in stock. Looks like nice wood ;-)
+Jeremy Schmidt haha! let me know what he sold you as "no idea" :) and thanks!
Amazing video ! Show everything very detailed from the beginning to the end, good lightning, great camera work and editing ! Love the way you build it, starting with raw peaces of wood, finish as a great, practical, goodlooking work bench. Showing this all in just 6.5 minutes, no words needed. Amazing ! All done by just one person !
thanks for appreciating my video!
J Bloemert Well said, I agree. pretty fancy, it is an piece of art.
Laura Kampf of
I just got my August 2017 edition of Woodworker's Journal and saw the write up on your mini work bench. You go girl. Great article.
Excellent. The first time I saw these mini work benches I was like why would anyone want this if they have a regular work benches. Now I'm wanting one. Lol
OK so this is the first of your videos I've watched properly and I'll admit I'm utterly hooked! I can't wait to find the time to go through your back catalogue... All the best
Still baffles me how many perfect people there are in the world critiquing the smallest of details.
Having no idea of concept, design and craft that not only go into the pieces people like Laura make but in putting it together in the manner they do.
Brilliant work, most important the piece is fit for purpose👌Keep on Making👌
Das ist kein Video mehr.
Das ist ein Kunstwerk!
WoW
vielen dank, heiko!
Heiko W. Du sagst es, mein liebster Mitkommentator :-)
Genau. Sehr wunderschön!
What I like the most about this video is that she didn't talk or even show her face. And let The work speak for it self 👌
We saw her face :) But very little. We know it anyway, and this video was perfect as is.
To anyone wondering which song is used, it's the instrumental version of "Colorize" from Epidemic Sound.
This Does Not Compute you da real MVP
I could not find that title by epidemic siund
Thank you so much for posting this
This is one of the most beautiful videos on CZcams
+Jeremy Kerr wow, thanks!
How nice that you pressed those old planes into the service of creating this elegant mini workbench! I am excited by the fine woodworking foreshadowing, and a more mobile Laura. Looking forward to ordering some Laura Kampf merch so we can import some style to Ohio. 😊
shirts are ordered! i just came home from shooting the final episode of the tv-show and now it´s time to play with smudo! he LOVES the toy you gave him :) can´t wait to use that bench outside in the sun
All I can say is WOW... Beautiful work.. I'm a metal fabricator ...after watching your videos, I might like to try some wood working... You make it look so easy ....lol...thank you
Excellent workbench, I love the contrast of the woods!
Great edition!
Watching someone exercise their craft so expertly is incredibly satisfying.
I have this overwhelming desire to buy Rockler products now! ;-) ;-P Joking aside, love the traditional woodworking mixed with a few bits of the modern. Thumbs up...
.
Bench dog in the side pocket be still my heart, plane shavings so thin and curly, with ALL the tools a fella could want, and a deluxe musical background to boot...justifiable circumstantial envy
Great use of No Idea. It brings the project together. Jokes aside, awesome video again Laura :)
haha! i think it might be mahogany
I think it might be meranti
Laura Kampf my idea - it is Sapele
Yeah, it looks like mahogany to me too.
I said mahogany as soon as I saw the grain - especially the way it chipped out when it was crosscut.
Absolute freaking work of art. Beautiful craftsmanship, reminiscent of Japanese woodcraft.
It 's not too much for a workbench ?? Looks like ishitani furniture, really...amazing job !!! Congratulaciones and hi from Argentina.
all the hand tools, I love it. what a wonderful piece of woodworking. thanks for sharing.
4:39 Oh, the joy of sharp drill bits! Love this build Laura!
thats a masterpiece ideale for small rooms glad i happened upon your programme thank you.
Loved the build ! These wooden planes sure are in great shape ! Keep up the good work :)
thank you!
Laura Kampf may I say, you've got beautiful hands, it is a work of art
Only found your site yesterday and I have fallen in love with it, and your skills. You are the perfect example of what I have been telling kids, including my daughters, for the last 50 years that there is nothing that a girl can't do if she wants too. Even taught an 8 year old girl how to use my 1200mm bed metal lathe while I would not let her brother near any of the machine tools. Keep up the good work.
What i really love is the editing~ It's so good~
Deceptively simple and elegant. The idea of taking a bit of work outside on a great day is priceless.
This would also make a wonderful looking riser for a monitor/television. Great job, looks amazing!
fantastic.....I like the way , you had a plan , and figured it out as you went.... brilliant
Laura, this has to be one of my favorite videos you have put out! I love the Happy Machine ;) and and the rest, but something about the care and quality is very impressive here. Nice work!
I didn't read the title to the video I just saw the little table and at first I thought it was going to be one of those Japanese Tea Tables then I realized it was going to be useful furniture and was pleasantly surprised. Great work and video.
awesome video as always...love your shooting style...thanks keep up the good work, looking forward to the next one
rocktruckrob I agree with you I was about to write the same that I love her shooting style... cheers
I really like this video, great sensibility, I put it on a new playlist to not lose it.
I love your work Laura!! Such a great idea :)
The no idea looks like cherry wood, it has the same kind of open brittle looking grain structure...beautiful stuff, I love working with it
Great job Laura! Very well done. I'm glad I found out about you from ModernMakerPodcast! Keep up the good work :)
+Dan Pryde thanks for stopping by!
All I have to say is fantastic. Great job and fine workbench. If my work turned out half as good as your trees wouldn't cringe when they see me walk by LOL.
Extremely sweet! I am in love!
that's a great project. I have seen pics of "bench bulls" & mini benches, and want to make one. now I have a couple more ideas!
Very good work and very good production values on your video. Love the brass bench dog idea. I'm about to build a drop down work table for a wall in my shop. I may use the brass dog idea. I noticed a troll below critiqued your sliding dovetail. He has no idea how good you did that. I doubt he's ever tried to cut one or he'd know better. Hopefully you just got a laugh out of it as I did! Never let the trolls discourage you. They find it easier to be critical than to actually do any work themselves and they will always be with us. Sad really. Just found you and will watch more as time allows. Subbed as well.
Súper chingon que le quedó a la wera
Mais uma vez surpreendendo ...

Sooooooo awesome !!! I love my huge assembly table but it would not work well with bench-dogs or a proper vise. Making one of these would be perfect for my situation. You're a ROCKSTAR Laura 👍👍👍
Awesome Laura 👍😄 ( 24 unlikes???? What's there to unlike? )
Subscribed 👌
Gary Thomson Joinery either a mistake or simply jealous people. love her videos great content
ego damaged males. Laura rocks... so talented!
I will take a guess at the music track. It was a brilliant project, but some people will automatically downvote it because of the audio.
I definitely upvoted her video and loved every second of it, but I do think getting rid of the music in favor of her doing a voice-over describing her build process is much better. There are TOO many YT videos with filler music. Again, however, this video was brilliant and her woodworking and video skills are wonderful!
Beautiful piece of work!!! Looks more like a piece of furniture than a mini workbench.
Love it! I need one too. Can we have a Laura Kampf online bidding store? 😄
haha
I bid $10,000 US!
Wait - we ARE bidding on Laura herself, right? :)
Estefannie Explains It All there is no price for Laura!!!! Priceless as one would say!!!!!!
Great build and you and April going to have a blast...
Not to criticize but those legs look like they have a questionable weak spot right behind the clamping ledge. There isn't a whole lot of wood there plus the grain almost is inline (with the grain) to break off that front foot where it's clamped. It might be OK but certainly don't put to much force on it.
David Mm I was thinking the same. Maybe a screw tilted at 45 deg though the weak spot would reinforce it? It would be a shame if this fantastic work bench would break.
You also don't want breadboard ends attached like that. They are meant to be loose. so the width of the table can change without putting stress on the breadboard ends. like this: imgur.com/a/Jbvao#FHw99Xv
Even if it would have been a loose breadboard end - the holes for the dowels should have been elongated like so: www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-tips/techniques/joinery/breadboard , otherwise the wood can't expand and contract.
Nevertheless it might work - my first breadboard end was glued completely and it's still in good order, but nowadays I know it better ;)

You are not a woodworker,,, You are an ARTIST
Thank you and keep up the awesome work.
well i was going to go to bed...
:)
Laura Kampf love your work, I show it off to everyone that will let me.
sweet man! that is the best support for me! thanks
I normally avoid wood working videos with so many expensive electric tools but this is something else and difficult to describe. I enjoyed the video very much. Thanks for posting.
When the video was finished I said "oh, I get it, it's like a tiny little work bench", my dude, it's in the title of the frigging video
Wonderfull and dedicated wooden job. If you love wood, it's will make you drems with it.
Extraordinario trabajo.
Just now found this video. This thing is a piece of art. Great small workbench surface. Very nice!
Wow I am impressed. Like the video and sound. Neat! No chitchat. Good choice of sequences to suggest or detail the actions. Brava!!!
God i wish i had your brains and skills. Your videos are amazing but they're nothing next to your true skill with making. Absolutely beautiful work!
This was the first Laura Kampf video I've seen. Hats off! Amazing craftsmanship, and great shooting! Whoever gave gave that video a thumbs down must be cranky and wants to share their crankiness
Nice work! When you glue two surfaces together, sliding them back and forth gets a better bond, my grandfather taught me that, he made furniture for ercol.
I am amazed at the skill level. For someone like me just looking at the many tools/equipment that I don't have or access to is quite intimidating. However the creative side of me draws me to continually watch these amazing creators. Thanks for the videos!
Your craftsmanship is out of this world! So much care for details!
Well done!
this is a nice and thoughtfully made piece. I would cut the tenon into the breadboard end a bit shy of the full width of the mortise, as well as drilling the 2 noncentral dowel holes, removing the breadboard end and slotting them a bit. this will allow central maple panel to breath a bit without any buckling and keep your surface flatter longer, especially with such a small work bench which you will be comfortable taking inside and outside to many different humidity places very quickly
Quedé gratamente sorprendido Laura, tienes la gran capacidad de convertir la madera es algo hermoso. Me gustó mucho tu trabajo, creo que vale la pena revisar tus otros videos, felicidades.
Wow, this is filmed so awesome, this qualifies as proper woodwork pornography. What a great attention to detail and inventive use of your authentic tools, I've literally got 25 new ideas to try out.
Dear Laura! I admire your skill. You are very clever. All your projects are very interesting and the videos are beautiful! And yet, you are beautiful, and your smile gives light! Always waiting for your new work. Good luck to you!
Great to see the old wooden planes getting some use. Love the idea of a portable bench - I now know what to do with my "no idea" wood.
Com um dom e um ferramental de excelente qualidade a coisa vai de vento em popa, maravilhoso, parabéns a todos.
Great idea and design to bring your table to comfortable level
Great video. I really like the way you cut those sliding dovetails.
Every video is a pleasure to watch. You had me at the label _"No idea"_ on the wood.
Fabulous, this is a truly talented woman!
Thanks for sharing this. I like the bench so much that I am going to try and copy it and I hope that it will be as nice as yours. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I've never worked with wood but using a hand plane seems like it would be relaxing just to use. Nice video!!
so beautiful!!! what gorgeous craftsmanship!!!
A Craftswoman,,,, How nice too see ! Rock On Laura ! Nice shop ! 😁✌
Love this, it’s still on my todo list since you U/L’d! Thank you.
Beautiful and useful piece, great craftsmanship and design...
Storing bench dogs in the legs is brilliant! Can't believe I've never seen that before.
Very elegant workbench top. You raised nice ideas in your making also. Thank you.
Really enjoy your work. This video gave me the idea to get a mini-bench together. Working on it now... even before big bench is together. Thanks for the ideas.
Beautiful elegant craftsmanship. I would put it on my mantle over my fireplace when not in use!
Love it! i like it because it is so small and it is so good to work outside.
Perfect job, It was beautiful, it won a fan from Brazil !!!!!!!!!
I keep coming to this video. It still amazing
Very nice work. The bench dog storage in the leg is a nice touch.
Ein Kunstwerk! Bau mir die Tage eine mobile werkbank, die ich in mein croc Lock klemmen kann. Danke für die Eindrücke!
Great job, Laura. You're doing great. Girls ruling. Always.
very cool assortment of tools, alot of them look sort of hand made, like custom, but made with industrial machines, i don't know how to describe what i mean , it dosen't do them their justice, i like the tools , alot, i wish i could make stuff that looks that good
A piece of art. Thanks for sharing.
You should have split this into 2 videos. It is just too much awesome for only one ;) Thanks Laura!
Refreshing to watch someone who knows what they are doing. Beautiful results, inspiring me to get off my chair and build one similar to yours. Love your channel, forget the trolls.
This is fantastic!! I love the idea of putting tape down to catch the glue from the pegs!
Wonderful attention to detail and finish, love the use of oil on wood to make a perfect finish.
wow ms. Laura I mean I had been hearing about you now and then but never actually looked you up ive only been woodworking for about a year and a half and with watching mattius john h. izzy steve jay and april catching up on all their stuff has taken some time but until today nothing with you has popped up on the home page and I'm sorry that it hasn't cause this video is amazing and I will defiantly watch out for your stuff now! well looks like I gotta go build a mini workbench now thanks
Another great video great presentation and great editing. I have not seen a woodworking bench set up like that since I was in junior high school back in the early 60s.
I really like that, sort of thing that is so useful for someone like me that has no set work area, clamp it down to the kitchen worktop and away you go.
Gutes Werkzeug ist alles. Und Platz natürlich.
Wie ich sehe alles vorhanden. Weiter so
