Let be on our Way..... Col Chamberlain: Major Spears 20TH MAINE FORWARD!!!!!>...... regiment responds: FORWARD!!!!...... Maj Spears Draws his sword..... draws the blade down, with a jutt! MARCH........
best fife and drum i could find on youtube, im a drummer at FT McHenry in the "Fort McHenry Guard" doing a parade soon, and this is what i vibe to whenever im bored
i love this stuff because it makes me think of how we in the modern era are triggered by certain songs, be they gangsta, country, soul, any genre you can think of, n they conjure certain images in your brain related to what you've seen and experienced in relation to it, these particular beats are meant to accompany fighting men into battle, and can you even imagine the depth of feeling they mustve had with no internet, no phones, no BS, just lessons from Ma, Pa, and the community, about what it really meant to be a man and love your country, and fight for the bruvs beside you! HUZZAH!
I knew it was based on Froggie Went A-Courtin' ( czcams.com/video/9piXcC7o_qk/video.html )but yeah, this is the first time I knew of it under this name :)
I'd like to believe that if I had to die - either cut down by a volley of musketry, or ripped apart by canister - that I would march to it with an earful of this music. One could die to this sound.
Do we know where this tune originated? This song has been passed down from my father, who used to sing it to us. We called it Dahl was a big frog who lived in the pool and the words were a nonsence tongue twister which we loved. I am in Australia and my dad came from an Irish background, so assumed it was an Irish folk song :)
Just imagine if the first world war occurred in the 1860s and we got involved both north and south united against the armies of Europe with all the generals of the war on both sides commanding the US Army man what a great fielding that would have been.
Man, I'm a moron... For years I'd search for "five and drum" and get confused on what the 5 meant... I had to search what a fife is... (English is not my first language if that is an excuse)
That beat was stuck in my head for a decade as a young, eager reenactor.
I agree. This one, old 1812, and the Minstrel boy are the best.
Me as well
It's been stuck in my head since watching Gettysburg the first (of many!) time when I was about twelve!
A decade? That's it? Lightweight...
so that is the song they play in the movie "Gettysbrug" - great marching music :-)

The best way to die, with a rifle in my hand, my flag flying overhead and my face to the enemy. Yes, going out in a blaze of glory!
