I’m 40 now. And1 was 100% responsible for my love of basketball. Specifically seeing Hot Sauce do the things he was doing with a basketball made the entire sport so cool to me and my friends. So glad it existed when it did. Shame it never made a real comeback. I’m now showing my son the old tapes.

And 1 was also my introduction to Basketball as well. I always thought the NBA players were cool, but it was something about the AND1 players that was so much cooler. I remember 2003-2005 waiting week to week to watch the AND1 mixtape tour on ESPN. Some of my fondest moment as a kid!!!

And1 was a huge part of my life growing up. I remember being in middle school and high school studying the mixtapes and trying to pull off those moves at park runs like hot sauce, AO, skip, etc and of course the espn show. It sucks that And1 didn't stay together but their impact and influence on streetball/basketball still lives on to this day

  • @chadshouse2059

I am 36 yrs old and AND1 Streetball was something i lived for, slept for, and dreamed of growing up. I had all of the mixtapes, i watched everything they ever put out and then some. I remember when "The Professor" first joined the And1 team and i immediately found my favorite basketball player because we had a lot in common, I was a smaller white kid with red hair hooping at courts with nothing but older men, I was short but fast, I managed to build myself up using moves i learned from watching And1 streetball mixtapes which made me stand out on the courts. The rise of And1 was an amazing moment in our history and something special for those who truly loved basketball and the game. Now i sit here and watch Ballislife and or Professor Live and think about the And1 days and truly miss it. I feel like something needs to take off again, i feel like someone could recreate something similar to And1 but make it better, bigger and succeed. If anyone could do it, it would be "The Professor". The fact that this man has built himself up in such a great way since the whole And1 moment ended means so much to someone who has followed him since day 1.

I'm the same age as the Professor, and really enjoyed a trip down memory lane watching this documentary. I owned all the AND 1 tapes, and CDs. I remember in 2002, my senior year of Highschool, and watching ESPN2 to see the latest episode of the Mix Tape tour. Before, smart phones, social media, etc. you had to either be there to see it, or someone had a camcorder and recorded it. It was a different time, where you really appreciated being there in person, and possibly seeing something you could only retell. THanks to the Professor for clearing somethings up. People forget that movie directors, and producers love twisting things around to sell a story.

To this day I still keep up with AND1 wishing they will be able to spark that fire one more time. I also noticed the flow of the documentary was out of rhythm as well. Similar to what Professor said, I honestly don't remember that Nike commercial holding as much weight as the owners made it seem. Like it was a cool commercial with a ton of great athletes in it, but that was about it. The main thing I remember about the And1 shoes were the price as a kid. They were always affordable and from what I remember pretty good quality at the time.

Thanks for the insight professor. As a 43yr old man, And1 tshirts were super hot back in the early 90's like 1994 and onwards. You had to have one of those shirts that talked hella trash. The shoes were never a thing for some of us because the variety of Nike shoes in the mid 90s were too good, from the Kidds, the Pennys, the Pippens, etc. I would consider it a ride into the sunset as you mentioned because it was a great memory of the past when And1 was at it's peak.

Me and my father never really had the greatest relationship, but I’ll always love him for introducing me to Escalade in a barbershop out in Wyandanch, NY when I was a child. RIP Big Man, never knew he was the brother of Mark Jackson until the day he passed 🕊 AND 1 was just as much as a staple in my childhood as the actual NBA !!

I met Aaron Owens(AO) a long time ago while I worked at wawa. I’m talking like 10 years ago now I think, he came into my job and it was super weird how fast I recognized him. I immediately lit up with excitement. I worked in the food section so I couldn’t just go up to him nor did I want to be weird so I didn’t. He must have caught me looking at him though cause he came over to my section and before even ordering he looked at all of us and said “ Wassup guys, working the overnight I see” I immediately fanned out and said “ bro….I’m a huge fan bro, you’re actually my favorite and1 player bro”. Yes I said bro that many times, I was a little excited to meet him ngl. My coworker at the time had no clue who he was lol. I legit spent hours upon hours watching and1 and loving how creative they could be. He was super nice, patient and cool. He just spoke to us for like ten minutes and I think he was more surprised that I was such a huge fan. Which made me like him even more tbh, he was super humble. I’ll never forget meeting him.

Hey Professor , curious would you ever want to buy And1 ? I know your been building your own success and brand with global hoopers and content creating but would you ever want to buy it and revamp it maybe bring back all the OGs do small tournaments put all the og guys in play with jobs and being apart of something they ultimately brought success too . Kinda like with snoop is doing with death row he’s been getting rapper master back for them so they can benifit off there talent and not these higher ups. I know kids now and days would love to see street ball and it being coach and curated by and1 legends would be full circle & 🔥💪🏽
    Just a thought lol 😂

I still remember watching ESPN And 1 mixtape tour during the summer of ‘03 I believe it was and seeing this skinny little white kid show up to the open run on one of the first episodes. During open run, and then in the arena after he was chosen from open run, He was shaking everyone, throwing no look lobs, finishing at the rim, just displaying incredible handles! Nobody could believe how skilled and lethal this seemingly naive and harmless looking kid actually was! The And 1 guys picked him to come on tour and the rest was history! Professor the great 💪🏀

One question, as I am sure you know, there is also an ESPN doc about And1. Personally, I thought the ESPN version was far superior to the Netflix version.. Really interested to hear your thoughts on that version and how the two compare/contrast.

Great honest take on the business side of why and how it ended the way it did. The owners wanted to cash out from their investment. They viewed it as a business venture all along, which is not what the players viewed it as, so of course there will be some misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Rafer and the Professor recognized the business component for what it was, while some of the other guys had a harder time separating the game from the business (and no blame to them, because they put in so much into making the brand what it was).

I'm from the UK, 37 and And1 was so inspiring and so enticing as i was already a massive basketball fan and loved the US culture and Hip Hop and it was a match made in heaven. The marketing was on point, buy something from And1 and get a free vhs tape, now in England is was really hard to get anything from the states so you would have to order specialised online catalogues or travel into london in the hope that Footlocker had the gear and shoes. I remember watching and1 mixtape 3 for first time as it was so hard to get at time of release and luckily we managed to download the tape from Limewire on 56k modem and it was so good back in those days we would watch the tapes and then instantly get on the court and grab our parents big ass camera and record our own tapes, i even had a uk streetball website i built back in early days of internet, it was so much fun and finding others tapes from others crews like Notic, EBC etc. I still have alot of jerseys from back in the day, but i lost my trash talking tees which i regret loosing but i still have my copy of the DVD they released which had all the tapes on there after purchasing a peice of clothing and still to this day is one of my grails.

Every day I could watch a few more seconds that had just buffered. It took around 6 months to download the whole thing. When it was finished, I made my own mixtape on windows movie maker using my favourite highlights, In da Club, and DJ Z-Trip as background music. What a time to be alive

I love And 1 from the bottom of my heart. At the other end, it had alot of players I knew more focused on flash then substance. It's cool to learn tricks, but if your trying to make a league, learn your fundamentals as well.
