Bavarian Crochet Stitch Tutorial

- The Bavarian crochet stitch is a simple stitch technique that's worked from the center out, much like a granny square design. The pattern is a two row repeat, so there's not much to remember as you work along, and it's based off of the treble crochet stitch. The Bavarian crochet stitch also has you work in the back post to create some raised ridges that act as borders around each row. This crochet stitch is also called "the wool eater" as it's a perfect way to use up and show off all of your leftover yarn scraps and help you pare down your yarn stash.

I love this. Most tutorials always take so much time to waddle around and talk about their life and unrelated things. You go straight to the point and waste no time explaining. Thank you so much
Very clear with a perfect pace. So very glad you did not count through every one of the 12-stitch corners. I tried a couple other videos for this stitch with way more views, but could't finish any of them due to the snail pace. Thanks.
Thank Goodness for the pause button❣
You are a good instructor. Thank you for sharing❣💞
This pattern is challenging for a beginner, but that pause button and dragging the time indicator line back time and time again works❣ 😁
I love it . Brilliant tutorial. I'd work a magic ring as I don't want a hole in the middle of the blanket
Love Kristi! Awesome teacher! 💝
Beautiful work!
I did this Afghan from your teaching its beautiful ♥
Thanks.. this is just the pattern I was looking for to use with some special yarn I have had for a while.. Easy to understand as well. Merry Christmas.
Thank you. Wonderful tutorial, You make it very clear.

I love it
Me encanta está preciosa, gracias linda.
I just started a baby blanket in this pattern following another tutorial which was a bit confusing. Thank you for your clear directions. I'm excited to finish the blanket for a friend's baby shower!
I have found this stitch so hard but will keep trying .
Oh gosh, here I go again! Time to start another blanket and then get frustrated 1/4 the way through and put it in my WIP pile 😂 I've started 5 different blankets and finally finished 1 of them! It was a 1st birthday present for my niece so I kind of HAD to with that one.
Anyways, thanks for the tutorial! Definitely going to try this stitch out. I'm trying to get my crojo back, but battling anxiety and depression have just sapped most of my enjoyment.
Oh wow that is a very lovely stitch. Is this good for beginners? I haven’t been crocheting for long. A friend of mine showed me how to crochet a blanket and all I did was repeat the same stitch which helped me be able to make several blankets for my family. I saw your tutorial and I liked it so much and I would like to make a blanket out of this stitch. This will be my second project I will be making, so I need a stitch that I can repeat. So you see I’m really a beginner. Not only that I’m a beginner on using a laptop that my grandson gave me as an early Christmas gift so I can start learning, this is so sooo hard for me. So bare with this senior citizen. Oh is there a pattern, now I don’t know how to read a pattern, but I can follow the steps as you continue the stitches. I prefer to see a pattern so I can start to learn on how to read a pattern so it can help me learn to read patterns. Thank you for sharing your tutorial with everyone that watch’s your tutorials. Take care and God bless you and continue to make new stitches and new projects for everyone thanks again bye.
Thank you for showing a finished blanket t!
Thanks. I think I do this
Beautiful and became your newest subscriber
Excelent!!
Can you make a blanket the same way using this patterning?
So if you don't cut your yarn do you just slip stitch over to the corner where you would start from?
Does anyone know the yarn she said? Also, if you do not change yarn every 2 rows do you have to cut yarn or can one slip stitch? Thanks
I love this pattern but would love to know how to use this pattern with a verigated yarn cause I have noticed that when you change colors you move over quiet a bit. So I need to know how I would use a verigated yarn after rounds 1 and 2
Can this be done as a round blanket?
Do we have to use a treble crochet
Can you do this with a variegated yarn instead of changing colors everytime?
Can you make a shawl or scarf with this stitch?
What would I do if I didn't want to change colour,? Thankyou
Hi Kristi, love the way you teach. My question is what if you want to do the rounds all in the same color - instead of cutting yarn each time for a new round- how do you get to the fifth stitch of the new round after finishing the previous round. Hope I described that clearly enough. Thank you for the great tutorials. Hugs, Toni
Slip stitch over to where she starts the next round.
Thank you Laura. Hugs!
Is it possible to use yarn that gradually change color instead of cutting yarn and change color? Can I still create same pattern?
Hi Selyna,
The color yarn you use doesn't have an effect on how the stitch is worked, so yes, it would come out the same. You'd just have different color variations throughout.
It depends on wheee the color change is- on Vera gated it could change more often than you would like there wouldnt be rows per se. Anna Karen cake it might take two or three rows or more to change colors and so on.
It's perfectly possible for a gradient yarn but this is a kind of pattern meant for switching colors every 2 rounds so that the color blips caused by the back post stitches can really shine through and create a dramatic effect. Using a gradient will make the effect less dramatic. Maybe try using a yarn that has periodic changes, like a self striping yarn maybe?
However, the blanket will still be very pretty because you'll get to see the texture whether you switch colors or not, so don't let my comment dissuade you (or anyone else who is reading this and has a gradient yarn ready to work) from utilizing this pattern
How many ply is this yarn?
yo quisiera que lo enseñara minimo asta la 5 buelta
Is there a way to do this without changing colors? I am trying to do this with a varigated yarn.
I found a way to do this. Just slip stitch to the fourth chain.
hi love this stitch and thank you but is there a written pattern? thanks again.

Hi Kristi and everyone at AllFreeCrochet--Kristi had a tutorial on this channel for a scarf, just a couple of weeks ago. I really wanted to make it but it is no longer on the channel, is there any way to get this tutorial back again?
Do you remember the name of it? It should be back now. We had to make a minor change. Sorry about that!

Hi I love this pattern but you don’t say which hook on your video or can you use any . Andy
She did say a 6.5mm hook. But use what every us right for your yarn?
Can anyone tell me what size hook she's using?
Sheila S 6.5
How much yarn does this pattern take?

I would love to know the size of the needle you used please
You can use any size hooks for Bavarian crochet - just make sure they match your yarn weight!
She used a 6 mm in the video
If you check the label on you yarn it will suggest hook size both for knitting and for crochet. If you gauge is too small go up a size on your hook and vice versa. Happy hooking :)
is she just doing a swatch? I don't see where she is having to join the squares
I would like this if you slowed down a lot more, and brought the camera much closer to be able to see exactly where you are placing the hook
Great stitch but to fast with the trebles can’tkeep up
laurie smith pause the video when you need to OR tap the three dots in the to right corner and change the video speed.
You are a bit fast dear
A little too fast to keep up with your tutorial
Taghread Belgaizi ...agreed but I just kept backing up the video and watched again and again until I understood.
To fast to keep up...😕
Pause & repeat ...that what I do !
Pam Carballoca so either pause the video when you need to, OR tap the three dots in the top right corner and change the video speed.
Pam Carballoca Yes, I agree with you. Here’s a link to the best Bavarian tutorial on CZcams. Not too fast, not too slow, Just right 😍

Stephanie Sabine it was too fast, and not explained well. Even when I paused it I couldn’t follow her.
Agreed. She's going too fast and not showing the stitches. It took me an hour to get the first round.
Camera angle is terrible and you don't explain where to places stitches
I completely agree, by the 3rd round, your hands are in the way and you suddenly speed up. I think if you redid the second part of the video showing where you are placing the stitches more clearly, this would be a much better tutorial.
too fast without enough instruction
Too many um,um,um
