  • I review and drive a Suzuki Swift 1.3L to work out whether it's among the best first cars in the UK! It's cheap, reliable, and quite fast for a first car, so all in all I was actually very impressed. I'll let the video tell you the rest!
    Hope you enjoy the video, and if you're in the market for one, let me know in the comments below!

    I honestly think you're way off about the exterior looks. These are great, sporty looking cars for a first car. Quite Mini-like. Far better looking than a dull Polo or Mk6 Fiesta.

    As far as engines go, this is bulletproof, dead simple multi point injection. Pro tip, when changing spark plugs, don't pull the ignition cables from the coils. If you do, you have a good chance to ruin the cables.
    Change brake fluid regularly, the ABS unit is a common failure point.
    Hungarian models had weak transmission bearings, change the oil regularly.
    The red display in the centre is prone to failure, make sure it works before you buy.

    They really are great cars. The 1.5 has the benefit of "winding up" much faster when RPMs hit 4000 (a modest VVT effect), compared to the 1.3. On paper, the 1.5 is only 9bhp more than the 1.3 but feels much torquier and as I said, pulls harder above 4000rpm. PS. the gearknob in that car looks ridiculous. Get your friend told!).

    Had a silver 3 door 1.3 for my second car! Picked it up from Glasgow and had a pretty chill drive back, nearer home I started revving it a bit more and I was surprised with how nimble the car was! Insurance was cheaper for the Swift than for my first car (a Polo 9N with 64bhp) and had excellent fuel consumption as well. Whacked on some black 15" Dezent wheels, rally style mud flaps, dropped it 35mm each corner and called it a day! Super reliable car, however the auxiliary belt is an expensive fix if it goes. If your budget stretches enough to get the 1.5 engine with 100bhp then there really aren't many better first car options

    I drove an auto for 7 days , it had over 260,000 kilos the engine (for such a high mileage car) felt great and runs very smoothly. The issues i noticed was the suspension needed servicing , felt every single bump but thats understandable because of the high mileage again. @@CarsWithJB I would say that, as a new driver, that's my main concern. I was using a Citroen for learning, and that had what I would consider a rather short clutch. It was all too easy to miss it, especially when starting uphill. I also tried a Skoda Fabia, and, to me at least, that seemed to have a much more forgiving clutch. Or perhaps that was just because it was at the end of the planned lessons, so I was already somewhat comfortable using clutch and gears...?
      Still though... I'm kinda surprised you'd say it's a good beginner car if it has a short clutch. A nice forgiving clutch is one of my main priorities now that I'm looking for my first car, to the point where I'm actually considering giving up on manual gears entirely and go for an automatic instead.

      @N55_R_55G Před 3 lety +1

      The smart thing to do is to own a shitbox with cheap insurance for a first year, and after you're done get the actual car you want. Personally I'd go for a fiat Panda as these will cost you 1100 on insurance (17, no experience) or a VW fox, or if you want even cheaper insurance 980 pounds on a 1.0 Kia picanto.
      But if you want a sporty car with more decent insurance go for a suzuki swift sport.
      I wanted a 1.8 Mx 5 myself, but insurers strangle me in pricing to insure one. Will have to settle for a Panda/picanto for 1-2 years then try the MX 5 again.

      How old are you? What's your yearly income? Would you be financing or buying outright? Does the insurance that you're looking at require you to have a black box? If so, there's no point having a fast car. Paying £14 000 for your first car + insurance is, as you admitted, not the smartest thing to do, and if you're still relatively young, the impact of your financial decisions now can affect you for decades.
